A movie released in 2017, "First Reformed" falls into the drama category & it is written by Paul Schrader whom also directed the movie. It is best known for starring Ethan Hawk, Amanda Seyfried , and Cedric the Entertainer. As I've never seen this movie - one of the reason why I nominated it plus I figured no one was really a fan & it was just flying under the radar - I am curious to find out what this movie is all about: It follows the life of a Protestant minister who is struggling with his faith during his tenure as the pastor of a church in New York. To be quite honest, the movie doesn't sound too exciting - I've watched the trailer & I was kinda left wanting more from it? Anyway, the movie was acclaimed by different critics for the performance by Ethan Hawke as well as the screenplay & direction - it feels like this movie had everything to breakthrough the award season but failed to do so; It was probably banking on that to ensure the movie can reach a broader audience.

Inspired by three stories by Maile Meloy's collections, Half in Love and Both Ways is the Only Way I Want it - "Native Sandstone", "Travis", "B. and Tome" - this movie was released in 2016. In this drama movie, we can find an excellent cast with Laura Dern, Michelle Williams, Lily Gladstone, James Le Gros, Jared Harris, and Kristen Stewart.   A movie by Kelly Reichardt (writer, editor, and director), I've heard of the movie but never gotten around to watch it - I do want to eventually want to watch it for the acting. Anyway, the movie was very appreciated as an indie movie & it became Kelly Reichardt's highest grossing film to date.

Overall, the movie seems to be a good one but at this point in the rankdown, we must bid farewall to good movies - in term of this one, I never seen anyone fighting for it so I am not sure how much its presence in the rankdown will be missed.

GLORIA

Gloria_poster.jpg

Gloria is a Chilean-Spanish drama film about a divorcée who decides to start dating again after her children are all grown up. She meets a man named Rodolfo, and the two of them hit it off. However, awkwardness ensues after she introduces Rodolfo to her family. Rodolfo is uncomfortable with so many personal questions and Gloria ends up getting drunk and gets too friendly with her ex-husband, which bothers Rodolfo. He leaves the party early, and Gloria is upset. She breaks off the relationship, but the two of them try again after Rodolfo's insistence. They spend a night together in a hotel, but Rodolfo must leave after he gets a call from one of his daughters that his ex-wife was in an accident. He first tries to ignore the calls, but he eventually leaves without a proper goodbye to Gloria. He actually leaves her behind at a dinner table alone after excusing himself. Gloria is upset yet again, and she spends the rest of the evening drinking heavily as she spends her time gambling at a casino and dancing at a disco. She wakes up the next morning hungover on a beach. She returns home, and Rodolfo has made efforts to contact her to no avail. The movie ends with Gloria getting a paintball gun, driving to Rodolfo's house, and shooting him in the groin. His family shouts at her as she drives away. She attends a wedding alone, eventually getting lost to the music when the DJ plays "Gloria" by Umberto Tozzi. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 99% approval rating and says "Marvelously directed by Sebastian Lelio and beautifully led by a powerful performance from Paulina Garcia, Gloria takes an honest, sweetly poignant look at a type of character that's all too often neglected in Hollywood." An English language remake was released in 2019 starring Julianne Moore as the title character. Anyway, sorry to any fans, but out goes Gloria from the rankdown.
