I've loved having tWitch and Jojo as judges. Leah Remini is a nice addition. I think she brings a unique perspective and don't get the hate, tbh. Nigel can stay pressed. I loathe the idea of it only being studio audience voting but it's better than nothing, I guess? #07. RALYN JOHNSON (SAFE) & CARTER WILLIAMS (B4) JIVE | "I'M STILL STANDING" BY ELTON JOHN | ALAN BERSTEN I mean... it was fun? A very Dancing With the Stars style routine, which makes sense since only one of them is actually a ballroom dancer. Carter is cute, but he dances with an Arnold sister and was picked over the hot Sosa brother, so he's by default not my favourite twink this season. A bit surprised she was safe over Essence, to be honest. #06. JORDAN BETSCHER & WAVERLY FREDERICKS (BOTH SAFE) CONTEMPORARY | "BOB IN THE RAIN AND THE LIZARD OF HOPE" BY TOM ROSENTHAL | MANDY KORPINEN & ELIZABETH PETRIN I was too busy fuming that Konnor got cut on my first watch to really see how I felt about this routine. On my second runthrough, it turns out I didn't care for it. #05. ANNA MILLER & BEAU HARMON (BOTH SAFE) BROADWAY | "DANCING IN THE DARK" BY FRANK SINATRA | AL BLACKSTONE A plus-size man that dances in heels being put in the Top 12? Nigel Lythgoe getting canned truly is the gift that keeps on giving. The routine was fine. Not really noteworthy, but wasn't a train wreck. Broadway on the first week tends to be harder because it relies on personality, and this season we barely know these people. (But as someone who works a lot and has 5000 seasons of Drag Race in my 'to watch' pile, the hour long episodes are appreciated!) #04. VIRGINIA CROUSE (B4) & JAMES "LORD FINN" THOMAS (SAFE) HIP-HOP | "DROP IT LIKE IT'S HOT" BY SNOOP DOGG & PHARRELL WILLIAMS | LUTHER BROWN I didn't even realize until halfway into the show that they were doing the routines in the guys' styles for the first week. That said, James obviously did great. Virginia was whatever. Nice routine to open the evening, but a bit forgettable by the end of the night. I was too distracted by the embarrassing SYTYCD censorship on songs. #03. ESSENCE WILMINGTON & THIAGO PACHECO (BOTH B4) CONTEMPORARY | "NO MORE I LOVE YOUS" BY ANNIE LENNOX | TESSANDRA CHAVEZ There were only six partner routines and half of them were contemporary. So You Think You Can Dance, other genres exist! (I say as I ranked two of the three as my top two couples routines this week, oops.) That said, this was fine. Both dancers were gorgeous. But as with the other routines, I don't think this is anything particularly memorable. smh @ them being in the bottom four. #02. TOP 12 GROUP ROUTINE HIP-HOP | "BUSSIN'" BY N*CKI M*NAJ & LIL BABY | LUTHER BROWN Fantastic way to end the night. I can't tell most of the cast apart in the routine but that's okay. #01. ALEXIS WARR & KEATON KERMODE (BOTH SAFE) CONTEMPORARY | "ROME" BY DERMOT KENNEDY | TALIA FAVIA It is clear these two have had actual life experiences because this was leagues above the others. Tens across the board! THE RESULTS: No surprise at Virginia being there. She was pretty forgettable in the grand scheme of things. Carter being there also wasn't a surprise as ballroom hasn't done particularly well on this show in the past. Essence and Thiago had no business being there. I'm upset.
