The video was actually out like many monthsago, although it’s a  newly released single. Curious on this last sentence you have on this song, and she did perform it on the Grammys so maybe familiar to you from there?

3. Jonas Brothers - “Sucker”

 

And now we have arrived to the final set of this list. Coming in at #3 for my 2019 Year-End list is “Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers. Now this is another big surprise for me because if you had asked me a year ago, or heck within the last 10+ years that the Jonas Brothers were popular that they would have a song in my Year-End Top 10, let alone Top 3, I would have never believed you at that fact ever happening. But…. things changed and that’s certainly happened here. And I kinda love how the Jonas Brothers proved me wrong. It does help that I’ve grown to like Nick’s solo music and Joe’s side projects, after the Jonas Brothers’ split sooo this isn’t too surprising in that sense, as i have grown to like those two over the years (and i guess Kevin now by default). But yeah wow the Jonas Brothers had a huge comeback year in 2019 and it’s all because of “Sucker.” I can’t remember my first thoughts of “Sucker” or when/where I heard it or anything like that. I think it was maybe one of those songs I didn’t want to like it? But that didn’t last long as i grew to really love this song. It did become a guilty pleasure and can kinda still be that although I have no shame in loving this. So don’t worry about that, Denise. I OWN IT. And I heard this song A LOT and am confident this is my most listened to song of 2019, solely because it was always on the radio and played so much there and elsewhere but that helped me grow to love this song. 

 

Finally, let’s talk about “Sucker.” I think this is such a fun, catchy and energetic song - and it’s kinda one of those songs that makes me happy whenever i hear it. I love Nick starts off the song singing We go together. Better than birds of a feather, you and me. From there you can tell, this will be so fun. Then I love how the song picks up to another level on the pre-chorus where it’s sung by Joe and then I think the rest of the guys sing it with him? Not positive but I do love the part that goes: You're the medicine and the pain. The tattoo inside my brain. And baby, you know it's obvious. Then of course I really love how the song picks up even more and pumps up during the chorus, which is kinda addicting and super catchy. I'm a sucker for you. Say the word and I'll go anywhere blindly. I’m a sucker for you, yeah. Any road you take you know that you'll find me. I’m a sucker for all the subliminal things. No one knows about you (About you). About you (About you). And you're making the typical me. Break my typical rules. It's true, I'm a sucker for you. I especially love the second half of it at 0:46 with the “I'm a sucker for all the subliminal things” part and the rest of it.. From the second verse, I love the parts where Nick sings: 'Cause I know you and you know everything about me and All of the nights I don't remember when you're 'round me. Then I love how the music has that breakdown section at 1:59 with the whistling sounds in there. It’s such a fun addition to the song there. Ooh the music video is interesting but fun to watch. I do like how it features all of the Jonas Brothers’ wives in it (or well technically Joe & Sophie weren’t married then but they are now lol). Although I am surprised it ~only has over 250 million views. I mean that is still a large amount but this song was HUGE and songs not quite as big as this got more views. Oh well, “Sucker” is a very fun and catchy song and definitely my favorite Jonas Brothers song by far.

2. Ava Max - “Sweet But Psycho”

 

My 2nd favorite song of 2019 is Ava Max big smash hit single of “Sweet But Psycho.” Obviously I LOVE this song a ton as it’s all the way up at #2. And this is a very impressive honor for Ava Max because this not only marks the first song I ever heard from her but also the first time she’s ever made it on my Year-End list and to do so at #2 is whoa. Although I feel bad about “So Am I” and “Slow Dance” missing out which had potential to do so, but I didn’t hear those two songs enough to land them here. I believe I first heard “Sweet But Psycho” on the radio and I liked it right away and would quickly grow to love it. I also remember my 2nd or 3rd time hearing this was on Tom’s list. So I heard this a few times in 2018, but I heard this much more in 2019. This was one of those songs I grew to love very quickly. I legit thought this had strong potential of being my #1 song of 2019 - and had this thought for the first half of 2019. And not only that,  it actually was. I thought it would have been cute having this song as my #1 of 2019, 10 years after having Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” as my #1 song then. I say this because Ava Max and this song reminds me SOOO much of early Lady Gaga, it’s crazy. I still think of Gaga with this song too. 

 

But enough of that and time to focus on Ava Max and “Sweet But Psycho.” I love the edgy feisty pop sound this song has. It has a haunting dark beat and music production and I love Ava’s vocals on this. Ava sounds great on the opening chorus, which I will focus on later on. But going into the first verse, I love the whole sound and all of what she sings in it. With her singing: She'll make you curse, but she a blessing. She'll rip your shirt within a second, has a dark creepy sound to it but i love it. I really love the pre-chorus where she sings: No, no. You'll play along. Let her lead you on. You'll be sayin', "No, no." Then saying, "Yes, yes, yes," 'Cause she messin' with your head. Love all of that but especially those falsetto NO, NOOOOO notes from her. :Wub: Then I absolutely LOVE the chorus and find it SO good and catchy….with Ava singing Oh, she's sweet but a psycho. A little bit psycho. At night she's screamin', "I'm-ma-ma-ma out my mind." Oh, she's hot but a psycho. So left but she's right though. At night she's screamin', "I'm-ma-ma-ma out my mind." Grab a cop gun. Kinda crazy. She's poison but tasty. Yeah, people say, "Run, don't walk away." 'Cause she's sweet but a psycho. A little bit psycho. At night she's screamin', "I'm-ma-ma-ma out my mind.". While I do love that whole chorus, I would say my VERY favorite standout parts are where Ava sings “I'm-ma-ma-ma out my mind” and “Grab a cop gun. Kinda crazy. She's poison but tasty. Yeah, people say, "Run, don't walk away.".” From the 2nd verse, I love the parts where Ava sings: See, someone said, "Don't drink her potions. She'll kiss your neck with no emotions and She tastes so sweet. Another big favorite part of mine in the song is at 2:26 which is the music breakdown section. I just love the sound of the beat there and how it gets into the bridge section which I also love where Ava sings: You're just like me, you're out your mind. I know it's strange. We're both the crazy kind. You're tellin' me that I'm insane. Boy, don't pretend that you don't love the pain. Wow this song is so psycho….. Sweet but psycho indeed. Another standout part is Ava’s ad-libs at 3:07 where she sings Run, don't walk away. SOO GOOD. Ugh I am kinda sad that this song falls a little short for holding onto the #1 spot of the year, but not tooo sad as I do love the next song some more. But still this is a fantastic song from Ava Max, and hope she releases more songs I can love in 2020.

1. Lizzo - “Truth Hurts”

 

Now we have arrived to the moment I’ve been waiting for and hopefully you all have been too. My #1 favorite song of 2019 is…. Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts”! Gahh it’s been sooo hard keeping this quiet as I could not wait to discuss this song and my obvious love for it sooo now I can. Well done to Denise and Kimmy on guessing this as my #1 favorite song too. I wonder how ~obvious it was or maybe it wasn’t? Sadly I don’t remember my first time hearing this song but I feel like I heard about/saw it on the charts before I actually listened to it. I was also still growing to love “Juice” so I wasn’t quite ready for “Truth Hurts” when this was re-released as a single but I got over that quickly obviously. Now some crazy facts about this song was that it was originally recorded and released in 2017 and was actually the song Lizzo was going to give up making music and her music career when this was out. Thank goodness she did not. :fear: Anyway I believe this was another one of those songs that went viral from Tik Tok videos and more specifically a Gina Rodriguez movie on Netflix. I remember seeing comments and posts on this song speeding up through iTunes and Spotify because of that. I am sure I liked “Truth Hurts” on first listen and I would grow to quickly love this song. Not only that, I became obsessed and addicting to this song and kinda Lizzo obsessed too, which I’ve been holding out from mentioning until now - although my “Good as Hell” and “Juice” write-ups should have shown that. I did a lot of speculating on “Sweet But Psycho” and “Truth Hurts” being my #1 song of 2019 as I honestly only knew either of those songs would hold that honor. With “Truth Hurts,”  I started speculating this could be my #1 song around July (mid-July, I think)? I think it was around August where I knew this song would be #1 on here, and I am so glad that is the case.

 

So now let’s discuss my love for “Truth Hurts.” First off, I know I always quote A TON of lyrics and in this write-up, I may quote every dang line of it, I LOVEE it all sooo much. This song is also probably and very much the only song I know all/almost all of the words to by heart, which means a lot nowadays since I never take the time to memorize song lyrics anymore like i did with songs in the late 90s/early 00s. “Truth Hurts” is not only such a JAM but it sounds like an anthem, like Lizzo’s biggest hits sound like. First off, I love the ~soft piano playing at the start of the song. I can’t describe it but I just love the sound of it. I also remember there being an Aristocats version that ws posted on the Disney Rankdown thread and IT HAD ME IN STITCHES…. watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaS7OcUrcMQ. It’s sooo cute, adorable but works flawlessly.  

Back to the song, I love the part where Lizzo starts off singing Why're men great 'til they gotta be great?. I remember on an episode of The Real, the hosts were talking about and asking what that line meant…. and I’m here wondering the same dang thing. :Dead: Of course the first verse starts off with THE ICONIC line of the song where Lizzo sings . LMAO that line was so iconic and went viral and was used on everything. Heck, Lizzo even faced some lawsuit of someone else saying that before she said that. :Fear: But I believe that case got settled.  I JUST TOOK A DNA TEST, TURNS OUT I’M 100% THAT :*! Not only did I hear that line so much online and various TV shows, heck *most* of that line was even said on local or national news I would watch sooo Lizzo definitely made it. :Dead: Other parts I love from the first verse are where Lizzo sings: Yeah, I got boy problems, that's the human in me. Bling bling, then I solve 'em, that's the goddess in me. Also shout out to Denise as she loves that “boy problems” line. :Teehee: Then OMGG the jam starts slaying even more on the second half of the verse where the tempo picks up with Lizzo singing You coulda had a bad b**ch, non-committal. Help you with your career just a little. You're 'posed to hold me down, but you're holding me back. And that's the sound of me not calling you back. THAT PART GETS ME SO PUMPED AND AMPT! YOU COULDA HAD A BAD NON-COMMITTALL. HELP YOU WITH YO CAREER JUST A LITTLE! I also really love those ~whiny sounding type vocals she does where she sings “doooowwwwnnnnn” and “sssooouuunnnnddd” SO much too! I definitely sing along to that as i do with the whole song pretty much. That part gets me soo excited and makes me wanna do the Tiffany Haddish hand dance that she does that goes like . Tell me you can see and imagine that dance to that part! The chorus totally slays and is a total bop of course where Lizzo sings: Why're men great 'til they gotta be great? Don't text me, tell it straight to my face. Best friend sat me down in the salon chair. Shampoo press, get you out of my hair. Fresh photos with the bomb lighting. New man on the Minnesota Vikings. Truth hurts, needed something more exciting. Bom bom bi dom bi dum bum bay. I LOVE IT ALL - although if I had to pick a true favorite part, I would say it’s the latter half of the chorus with the “fresh photos with the bomb lighting” line onwards. Omgg Lizzo singing about having a new man on the Minnesota Vikings cracks me up because that isn’t a football team I usually think of but now whenever I do, I CAN NOT not think of this song. i wonder what that team thinks of this song. And I am certainly HERE and always gotta sing Bom bom bi dom bi dum bum bay. That was my favorite part for awhile. Not so sure now though. I love the start of the second verse where Lizzo sings: You tried to break my heart? Oh, that breaks my heart. That you thought you ever had it. No, you ain't from the start. Hey, I'm glad you're back with your b**ch. I mean who would wanna hide this? I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever be your side chick. First off, poor Lizzo with all of what she had to go through with this man. UGH she deserves better. But the best thing about all of this is that Lizzo gets the last laugh on him…. she was never his girl to begin with and she’s better off on her own without this guy. Because she WILL NOT STAND for being a side chick - and we stan Lizzo for this in this house! Ooh an that guy’s face at 1:03 (freeze frame it) is EVERYTHING. :Dead: You already know but I am here for the second half of this verse where Lizzo sings: I put the sing in single. Ain't worried 'bout a ring on my finger. So you can tell your friend, "shoot your shot" when you see 'em. It's OK, he already in my DMs. : I PUT THE SSSSIIIINNNNGGGGG in SINGLE! AIN’T WORRIED BOUT A RRRRIIIINNNNNNGGGGGG ON MY FINGER. Omggg the last line of her singing “It's OK, he already in my DMs” cracks me up soooo much. Lizzo really is getting the last laugh. She’s kinda cute singing that part too. Then the bridge at 1:49 totally slays too, but we already know that. It’s where Lizzo breaks it down singing I'ma hit you back in a minute. I don't play tag, b**ch, I been it. We don't f**k with lies, we don't do goodbyes. We just keep it pushing like aye yi yi. The freaking best! It’s soo good that Lizzo had to sing it twice. Although my absolute favorite part is the WE KEEP IT PUSHING LIKE AYE YI YI! Ooh and the music video is soooo entertaining and so much fun. I love the twist at the end where it shows Lizzo marrying herself @ 2:37. Then I love the closing ad-libs of the song too. So yeah “Truth Hurts” was another one of those songs i heard SO much on the radio and I honestly never got tired it of. I would put it on blast, jam out to it every time and never get sick of it - and I can’t see that ever happening with me and this song. And no matter what anyone thinks or says, Lizzo is MY breakout/breakthrough artist of 2019. I can get those saying that about Lil’ Nas X or Billie Eilish but Lizzo definitely appeals to me most. I’m so happy Lizzo had an amazing 2019 and hoping her 2020 becomes even more amazing for her, as she truly deserves. And I will close this write-up with her slayage performance of this song and “Cuz I Love You” from the Grammy Awards!

Yeah the Intentions video came out last week and a shorter version came out a day ago, than ks to my YT search telling me. Ooh No Good sounds kinda older, which I don't mind. Ooh  I haven't heard Salt and I haven't head OTY ither and I didn't know if that song was a single or not - I only list and rank singles, as it's tough for me to factor in album tracks.

It is a wonderful turn of events and change of heart from your previous hating JoBros self.    I wish I could show this to 2008 Wally.  You should like some of their older music too, but you did at least like some of those songs then I believe...  But yeah, I noticed you liking Nick's solo stuff and DNCE, so that was interesting, but it is only natural to then like the Jonas Brothers music. And funny regarding Nick's solo music cause pretty sure his was the voice you hated on most. "I think it was maybe one of those songs I didn’t want to like it?" I don't get this. It is quite a surprise to me. And wow, her first appearance on your list is at #2. That is incredible... although Maren was at #1 last year.  "I believe I first heard “Sweet But Psycho” on the radio and I liked it right away and would quickly grow to love it. I also remember my 2nd or 3rd time hearing this was on Tom’s list. " What about my list?  I posted it tooo and maybe before Tom because he probably had it higher. I remember hearing this in 2018... The bridge doesn't stand out to me as much, except for that "aye yi yi" part, which I love.   I haven't seen the video before, but that's nice she marries herself and it goes with the theme of the song, so makes sense. I feel like I didn't hear this song as much as her other two on the radio... but then I still did a lot. Now I wonder. I didn't care for this song at first and for the longest time. It wasn't my style I guess, but recently, it started to grow on me. Like a month ago maybe. I really got into those parts I named specifically, but I got the feel of the whole song, so I do like it now.

It's a catchy song that's fun and dancey for sure. Oh, and the translation for the part you quoted is "Calmly I want to see how she shakes / Move that poom-poom, girl / She's an assassin when she dances / I want everyone to see."

50. Dan + Shay - “Tequila:” "I am not even sure if Carrie Underwood has done that." And why not, Wallace?  Anyway, I don't consider this a 2019 song, but it's cool to see it here on your list. I do like this song a lot, and it might be my favorite Dan + Shay song. Kudos to them on all the success this song helped them achieve.

49. Katy Perry - “Never Really Over:” I like some parts of this song, but there are other parts that make me think could've been done differently. I would prefer a more stripped down arrangement, or maybe just omit the very fast parts in the second part of the chorus and change it to match the rest of the song better? I don't know, but I would like this song a lot more if the arrangement wasn't so busy. I do think Katy sounds great here, and I like the lyrics too.

It's a beautifully written and beautifully sung song. It became very popular, but it's deserving of its success. It's such a great song.

I do like this song though, even if it's not one I listened to as much as other Ed Sheeran songs. I agree about the laid back and airy feel of this song.
