BRANDON DUMLAO

I actually like Brandon a lot and thought he deserved WAAAAAY better during his times on the show, but I think breaking the Top 175 of the rankdown is a respectable position for him here. Brandon is a hip-hop dancer and was an alternate for Season 6. When Billy Bell got mono or whatever and had to drop out of the show, Brandon stepped in as his replacement. It turned out to be a very weird scenario, because Billy danced two group routines in the taped showcase episode but then vanished and Brandon was suddenly there. I think Billy being in Season 6 would have been very interesting. Billy vs. Jakob, Billy & Pauline partnership, etc. I don't think Billy would have shook up the final 6 that season, but who knows. Anyway, Brandon was the alternate so he came in for one episode to perform a duet with Pauline. I think it was a ballroom piece (which.. is shade). That was also the weird time where the judges picked the bottom 4 dancers. It was ridiculous, because they put Russell and Brandon in the bottom. Russell had danced with the choreographer for his routine because Noelle was injured. So yeah, it MAY have been okay to put Brandon in the bottom based on the duet (even though I think with the right edit of him stepping in for Billy that America might have voted to keep him in the competition... plus he and Pauline made an adorable couple) but putting Russell in the bottom was so stupid because he did fine with the choreographer and there is no possible way that America would have voted Russell to be in the bottom after that. I feel like the judges either wanted Brandon gone or wanted to showcase Russell for whatever reason. So yeah, not only did Brandon get ripped off by being in the bottom without a vote, but he was in a bottom 2 instead of a bottom 3, and it was against the eventual winner of the season and someone in a similar style as him. Russell went OFF in the solo and was fantastic, and I don't think Brandon or anyone else had any question that he would be able to do anything to save himself. Brandon danced a beautiful lyrical solo to John Mayer and ended his run with dignity.

Brandon later was eligible to audition for other seasons of the show, and he did multiple times. But I don't think he ever made it to the green mile ever again, which I think is totally lame because I think he's a great dancer and that storyline would be great to watch. Why bring him in on the show for one night just to cut him and never let him get far again? It bothers me. WHATEVER. Basically, Brandon is a trooper and I have mad respect for him. Brandon now teaches every week at Movement Lifestyle in California. He is a great person to follow on Instagram because he has a lot of class videos.

SAVE: Jessica Fernandez for being the first to use pointe in competition on the show and for the quote "I don't need this!!!" that she yelled in the bathroom mirror during Vegas Week that I quote often.

Pauline Mata (Season 6)

Pauline Mata is a Jazz dancer from Season 6 of the show. Brandon was just cut from the game, and Peter was cut by me two nomination cycles ago, so it's only fitting that I take Pauline out from the game. I remember really liking Pauline going into the season, so I was disappointed by her overall run as a contestant. Pauline danced in that pretty forgettable Sonya Tayeh Showcase Jazz piece. Then she was partnered with Brandon after Billy Bell withdrew from the competition. They danced a Smooth Waltz for the first week of the competition, which was not good at all. Pauline landed in the Bottom 4 after this routine, but survived over Broadway star, Ariana DeBose. Pauline lost Brandon as a partner and gained Peter in his place. Together, they danced the Wade Robson "Little Green Bag" jazz routine. During her final week of the competition, Pauline danced a Quickstep that was not very good and resulted in her elimination at the Top 16 mark.

After the show, Pauline dated fellow SYTYCD alumni Tadd for quite some time. I do not think that they are still together though. However, Pauline has steadily worked in the industry ever since her time on the show, which is great for her. But this is an easy elimination to make at this point.

Poor Season 6 is taking a big hit now. At least the rest of the S6 cast will be immune next round. :haha:

MALENE OSTERGAARD

IPB Image

A ballroom dancer from season eleven, Malene Ostergaard notably has an incredibly long name. She was partnered with Marcquet Hill for the showcase round, where the two of them did a routine to The Holy Spearit’s Work Bitch Work Work. She landed in the bottom three based off that routine, and after her routine with Stanley Glover, she was eliminated. Oops, looking at Wikipedia, it turns out I mixed her and Jourdan up in my mind. Fitting since like half of the girls side that season is interchangeable AND HOW IS BRIDGET WHITMAN STILL IN THIS. Anyway, Malene’s real first routine was a Samba with Marcquet. At least I was half correct. I think I would’ve preferred him staying considering Brooklyn was in the B3 with her. Imagine saving Brooklyn. Choices.

Valerie Rockey

I’m cutting another Noted Republican™ but then again, she probably deserves it. I truly believe Valerie only made the finale because she was Ricky’s partner and he was very clearly leading the votes all season. She proved several times that she couldn’t dance outside of her style with mostly lacklustre ballroom and hip hop routines, whereas Ricky, once separated from her, had a great hip hop with Z*ch and a decent ballroom with Anya. Valerie’s all star routines, by comparison, were a series of tragic numbers where she was outdanced by superior contestants like Twitch and Aaron. The best I can say about her is that she’s friends with Nick Young and that her success probably set up for Gaby’s win the next season so. There’s that.

Asuka Kondoh

IPB Image

I am choosing to cut Asuka to briefly talk about my thoughts on her during Season 5, which was something rather interesting. Asuka is a ballroom dancer from Season 5. I remember being a big fan of Asuka’s early on Season 5. I’m sure I loved her audition and all of what she did on the Vegas rounds. I don’t remember now but I do remember that she was my pre-live shows favorite of Season 5. Myyy oh my how have times changed. :dead: Sadly come to the live shows, Asuka became a really big disappointment to me, and probably the biggest disappointment for me of any SYTYCD contestant ever? Ugh I know that sounds really harsh coming from me, but I tell it how i mean it.

So let’s discuss Asuka’s journey, she was partnered with Vitolio and her first dance was a Tyce Diorio Broadway to “Hot Honey Rag” which was really boring and not good - where she landed in the Bottom 3 and got saved. The second week, she danced a Waltz to “Dreams Are More Precious” which was very good & pretty and by far her set dance. She was safe after that. Then the third week, she danced a Jazz to “Heartbreaker” which was another boring and really bad dance. She was eliminated after that and understandably so - with two out of 3 bad routines. I do wish Asuka had a better run as I had high hopes for her. :(

Heartbreaker was a guilty pleasure. :*

I’d have kept her around over Karla. I feel like her and Jonathan could’ve been a better match than Vitolio and Karla.

I was about to say..... DON'T LIE TO ME. :dead: Malene dancing to "Work Work" would have been hot! Instead of that boring Broadway she was saddled with. :|

ALEXIE AGDEPPA

Alexie Website

Alexie was a contemporary/jazz dancer on Season 7. She previously auditioned for Season 6, made the Green Mile, and then was cut along with dancers like Amber. I honestly think that if she was not up against Pauline that she would have made the show in Season 6. Anyway, she was determined to make the show and was cast as one of the Top 5 girls in Season 7 (over Ryan Ramirez). I think that making the Top 11 in Season 7 is quite an achievement since they were not used to doing a smaller cast at that point, and I think the moment of her making the Top 5 girls was really nice. She danced in a broadway quartet during the showcase week alongside fellow contestant Melinda and all stars Allison and Lauren. After that, she danced a duet with All-Star Twitch and I think it was pretty forgettable ESPECIALLY because she went right after Alex Wong and Allison danced Hallelujah and the judges lost their minds over it. Alexie was in the bottom three with Melinda and Cristina and she was eliminated first that season. I probably would not have chosen her to go home, but I totally get that you can't just keep contemporary girls every season... ugh... but I will admit that I preferred Ashley and Lauren that year. It was sad to see Alexie go home first after trying so hard to make it, but she got to dance with Twitch and in some fun group routines and as the judges said to her, she will always be part of the SYTYCD family.

Now Alexie is an actor, choreographer, Dance Plug reporter, etc. Check out her website and Insta for her latest.
