When it comes to females, I mostly go back too, as with males (Emmylou Harris, Dolly, Patsy Cline, Loretta, Tanya Tucker, etc), but I do listen to more modern females than the mainstream males (Maddie and Tae, Yola,  I do enjoy some Kacey, a lot of Miranda Lambert´s stuff is really good).

Maren and Kelsea do nothing for me though. Way too poppy for my taste.

The females I have are mostly a bunch of tracks from The chicks, all the Highwomen, Miranda Lambert, Reba, Loretta, Martina, Dolly, Bonnie Raitt, Faith, Shania, [well, I don't know where I'll classify Big Little Town 🤣], Deana Carter, Kacey, Tanya Tucker, LeAnn Rimes and Kelsea Ballerini.

I'm not a huge fan of country pop like Maren, Kelsea and Kacey, but I'll give it a go on a track here and there.

I strongly feel you would like "Better than we found it", by Maren. It's a folky protest song that , btw, should be covered on The Voice.

PS: My absolute favorite is Miranda Lambert, though.

    That is correct.

It´s pretty much the reason that we often get better material from them than the males. It´s because those are projects that they work hard on and dedicate themselves into, since they need to be "good enough" for the radio to hear.

With males, like I said, several of them have good things too, but they don´t need to show them for their music to be played on the radio. What we get from them is usually a song that could have been written in 5 minutes max, and it´s pretty clear. Again, compare the Blake song I posted now to "Come Back as A Country Boy".

That´s why, when it comes to males, I often ditch the mainstream country artists and listen to the classic ones (George Strait, Willie, Cash, Waylon, Vern Gosdin, etc). Or some hybrids, like Chris Stapleton, Sturgill, maybe some Isbell.

The only mainstream one that I actually enjoy is Eric Church. He´s not a vocal beast by any way, but I do like his material. He strays away from the bro-country formula most of the time.

Honestly, this "Come back as a country boy" still gives me nightmares. I just can't.

My country playlist is mostly dominated by females spamming from Loretta to Maren Morris. The exceptions are Jason Isbell, Sturgill, The Highwaymen, John Prine and Chris Stapleton.

But I do have The Dance, Amazed and Anyone Else by Blake Shelton, because of Natalie Hemby.

I’m not saying this isn’t true but Blake actually has one of the bests voices of mainstream country male artists, which just reiterates how little of it is vocal ability.

And reiterates how much women in country music have a mountain to climb.  While most of the female singers run circles around 90% of their male peers, the men are the ones getting played on radio. And a lot of them sound like a potato.

It may be time to admit that singers that do well on the Voice just don’t have the It factor necessary to succeed in the industry.

I have a gut feeling about GNT, though. I've commented about it on their fan thread. But in sum: they are reaching for a much more niche genre (folk/americana) than most of the usual top 5. The problem is the Americana industry to embrace a singing competition act. But well, the Americana industry is usually known for embracing misfits, so...

  5. I'll guess the upbeat song, but I'm ALWAYS wrong about these things.

I'd say... God only knows, by the Beach Boys.

Kelly performed this song earlier this year on her talk show alongside the family of one of the original members of the Beach Boys and made it a whole moment about connection, etc.

Maybe this song is in Kelly's head for them.

Now watch me get it wrong once again 💀

  6. I hate when there's a band/group and people start with "oh, they are going solo". "Oh, the vocalist will leave the band". "The rest of the band is just support for the vocalist". If someone gave a dolar to Hayley Williams or Brandi Carlile everytime these types of comments came up, they'd be wealthier than Beyoncé.

GNT haven't even finished The Voice yet and y'all are breaking up the band, or analyzing internal dynamics that we don't even have a clue about.

So you think it will be an original? Wouldn’t their duet already be coming out prior to the finale? The countdown made it seem like whatever it is is being released the day after the finale. I mainly thought it was interesting that they seem to be releasing a song the day after the finale when most presume they will win. Just curious how that will work with their contract or getting out of it, etc.

Also, re; Bella’s song, from some of the comments from other contestants, it seems like this is a song she played for them at the hotel so presumably it’s not something she just wrote.

I don't know if GNT will be releasing an original of any kind. I just figured a christimas song by GNT would make sense right now.

I had a heart-tugging thought regarding Bekah's story about the gift from Joni.  The video Bekah sent Joni was Little Green. As earlier mentioned in this thread, Little Green is about the daughter Joni gave up for adoption.

So young Bekah sends a video of the song -- dressed and with the floppy hat much as Joni was often pictured.  Here I am imagining Joni seeing it and hearing her sing it beautifully -- then thinking to send her a birthday gift. Makes me sadder than the song itself.

Yes, it crossed my mind. Joni was probably the same age and saw her younger self reflected in Bekah, around the time she had the "little green baby".

I referred to it as a whole, since I remember people being a bit dissapointed by it at first since it was pretty hyped.

I remembered the POs having quite a bit of criticism, many dissappointed with Team Ariana, especially since it had 2 IDF favorites.

Then came the playoffs results, which also didnt sit well with some users.

Then the Jim and Sasha snowflake killer run, Gymani's early exit, etc.

Then again, I probably didnt phrase it right now that I think about it, since every season has its detractions according to IDF.

But I think most of us can agree the sesson ended up having a great finale lineup.

This season has caused a bit of division as a whole, but I can safely say this week was one of the best semifinals we've had in quite a while.

I know all 5 finalists can sing live, so I'm just hoping for good song choices.

Just curious, bud. Why do you think this season has been somewhat divisive?

Good point about the folkie/Americana route.  We have several venues here on that circuit, and pre-pandemic I got to see a lot of those folks. I think that, with some management help, they could draw in the middle-sized venues as soon as they have a good album to tour on. A lot, maybe most, of those folks make their living playing live so it's a life on the road.

They may have bigger dreams. My biggest concern would to be locked in to a major that doesn't care about them.

Yes. Maybe the worst move they can do right now it attach themselves to a major label. They aren't friendly with folk acts and won't get the connections needed in this particular circuit. They need to go indie ASAP.

They're pretty marketable. Young, good looking, charismatic, and talented guys.

You're right when you say that folk is less competitive than pop and country, I'd say indeed if they play their cards right, and hopefully with some Kelly help, they can make a good living out of this.

All I know is that as soon as they release another album, I'll be there.

I most definitely will be, 'cause singer-songwriter/Americana is right in my wheelhouse.

And I actually gave it a go on their "Back up plan" single and there's potential. It just needs better producing (which they'll end up getting it, with a contract).

I mean, look at this line up for the Newport Folk Festival in 2021. There are great names within the genre, but there's also a lot of up-and-coming artists that all they got to their name is one album rotating on indie radio and opening acts for artists like Jason Isbell.

If the folk and Americana community embrace a "singing competition act", it's done.

  13. Here's the thing: I'm gonna offer my complete unqualified opinion.

I have a gut feeling that if Girl Named Tom can keep the band together during the next years to come, they'll achieve a comfortable level of success within their genre. Much more so than some of the previous Voice winners.

    My reasoning is...

Folk and Americana's market isn't huge like country or pop. The competition for what Cam Anthony, Chevel, Brynn, etc., are trying to achieve is different. If GNT signs with an indie record label, starts getting gigs like Newport Folk Fest and becomes somewhat regulars in community radios such as WFUV, they'll already be in a comfortable place. Especially when everything a folk artist need is a solid base of listeners, which they've been gathering during the course of the program. And Itunes make it evident.

My point is: I feel like if GNT actually wins, there's a chance they'll be one of the best winners The Voice ever produced. I'm not saying they'll become Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood at all, but if they play their cards right, they might be a new name in the Americana/Singer-songwriter/Folk circuit.

GNTs album Hits from the Road is currently 5th on the iTunes Pop Album charts (50 overall)!  I know iTunes is not what it was but is this the first time a contestant has charted so high with their pre-show album?

If they win, I hope Kelly helps them getting free to sign with the label that better suits them. I know Brynn is signed to Elektra, who also signs Brandi Carlile. A contract with a smaller record company isn't bad at all for Americana/Folk artists. The last thing they need right now is a bad contract.

Kelly is singing a different (solo) song from her Christmas album on Monday, during the performance show.

I know, but it's still weird they won't take the moment to promote the single with Ariana Grande on a major plataform besides the christmas special. But we all know Kelly Clarkson + single promotion is synonym with chaos.

where is the Kelly + Ariana duet of Santa, Can’t You Hear Me???? this feels like such a missed opportunity😩

I feel like this is such a missed opportunity that is actually weird. I feel like there's maaaaybe something going on regarding single promotion, etc. I'd have a better imput, but ATRL won't let me join their table 💀

Pre-finale, I'm calling that Hailey will beat Wendy. I like them both, but its what I see right now. Although not surprised if Blake's base comes through enough to get her the 2nd place spot instead.

Oooh, Don't tease me with the idea of Kelly's face in a GIF, while contemplating a #TeamKelly top 2. Wasn't this one already enough? 🤣

OMG, I've been dying for a 90's cover from GNT in the lines of Cranberries or Sarah Mclachlan. May The Voice gods hear you and let's hope we are right with this pick. In Kelly Clarkson we trust.
