  1. While I know it might be extremely risky to cover, especially given what a great job Candice Glover did covering it during Season 12, I wouldn't mind it if one of the contestants were to sing Lovesong by The Cure. Friday I'm in Love might be a better song for someone to possibly cover, though. I also wouldn't mind hearing another cover of Nothing Compares 2 U by Prince and I'll Stand by You by The Pretenders, although I would prefer it if a male could possibly sing I'll Stand by You instead of a female. I have a feeling Triston might cover something like Blaze Of Glory by Bon Jovi, but I wish he would consider covering something a little bit more unexpected than that, like the Dolly Parton version of I Will Always Love You. And finally, even though it's been covered way too much for my liking before, I wouldn't entirely hate it if McKenna were to cover The Chain by Fleetwood Mac.

    What about Abi?

While I know it has been covered quite a bit already, I really do think she'd do a great job singing Creep by Radiohead. I think she'd also do a great job covering Yesterday by The Beatles. However, if she wants to cover a song that hasn't been covered quite as much before, I think she could do a great job covering Ordinary World by Duran Duran, Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) by Kate Bush, This Used to Be My Playground by Madonna or Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) by the Eurythmics. I've also thought it might be interesting for her to possibly cover We've Got Tonight by Bob Seger since it was covered on Glee by Lea Michele's character. Oh, and I think Come Undone by Duran Duran would be a great song for KB to possibly cover, too.

  3. I have a few more thoughts regarding what songs I feel some of the Top 14 contestants should consider singing for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Night. I think Nya could do a great job covering the Sheryl Crow version of Sweet Child O' Mine. I think she'd also sound good covering a Donna Summer song, like No More Tears, if she really commits to the performance. And I think McKenna could do a good job covering Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac, The First Cut is the Deepest by Sheryl Crow or On The Radio by Donna Summer, should she sing it at a slower tempo.

agreed! We's performance of Something's Got A Hold On Me last season was the performance of the season for me because of the rock inspired arrangement and vocals. Hopefully more contestants do that this year!

While I certainly would like to see more of a James Durbin/Caleb Johnson rock and roll type of performance, I'm just real skeptical that any of the current contestants could pull something like that off, especially since most of them seem to struggle covering more upbeat songs. Anyway, I really appreciate that people responded to this thread. And I enjoyed reading about what types of songs people feel that the contestants should consider singing for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame night.

  5. Well, even though a couple of my favorite contestants have been eliminated due to not performing as well as they needed to and poor song choices, there are still contestants left in the top 14 that I really like and am wondering what types of songs they should consider singing for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame night. As I write quite often about the songs I'd like to see the contestants cover, I hope they pick one to sing that hasn't been covered to death before. It also should be a song that a large majority of the audience is familiar with. Janet Jackson and Madonna are both in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So I think the female contestants would be wise to consider singing some of their songs instead of a Whitney Houston song. I feel This Used to Be My Playground by Madonna could be a good song for someone to cover. Also, if a female has to cover a Blondie song, I think a cover of Heart Of Glass might go over better than yet another cover of Call Me. I'd love to hear a female possibly cover Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) by Kate Bush as well. I don't think any of the contestants could go wrong potentially singing a Beatles song. But, I would at least try to avoid singing Imagine if I were them. And if I were the contestants, I'd definitely avoid singing House Of The Rising Sun by The Animals and I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt at all costs. Anyway, those are just some thoughts I have as of right now regarding some of the types of songs I think the contestants should consider covering for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Night. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on the types of songs they feel the contestants should sing for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Night.

Honestly the Will/Triston dynamic might end up giving a repeat of Chayce/Caleb in S19. The annoying thing is that we don't know *how* that would've fully turned out since Caleb was obviously disqualified. But it was clear regardless that Chayce was winning.

Don't forget about Jack as well. I think he might have a good chance of making it pretty far in the competition, too. And personally speaking, I will find it at least somewhat interesting if he ends up being the best of the 3 male country singers this season since a lot of people probably think that either Triston or Will is going to win.

  7. I just wanted to say thank you so much to the posters who posted links to clips from some of the rehearsals and performances that took place at the Aulani Resort in Hawaii. I really appreciate it. And, I, too, thought McKenna did a great job covering The Story! I also think Odell, Hailey and surprisingly, Kennedy all seemed to do a decent job singing the songs that they chose to perform. So, once again, thanks for posting the links to the clips that you did.

    The Hanson songbook/1990s theme! 🧡

    ;)

I am legit the only Hanson fan on the internet who wants it but I try...

I'm admittedly not much of a Hanson fan, but, I, too, would absolutely love a 1990s theme night! And as far as more current songs are concerned, I'd really like to hear Ajii or Odell cover Turn the Lights Back On by Billy Joel.

So who would be more willing to be critical on camera?

Well, former American Idol judge Harry Connick, Jr. seems like he doesn't have a problem with being more critical on camera. And maybe Christina Aguilera or Adam Levine if one of them were to be interested in doing another singing show?

I hadn't even thought of Miley Cyrus as a potential replacement for Katy Perry until her name was included in this poll, but, I think she'd be a pretty good replacement for Katy as well, especially since I really thought she did a decent job as a coach on The Voice. I'm also interested to find out what happens with Ryan Seacrest after this upcoming season of American Idol ends. Will he continue to host the show or not, given that he's going to be the new Wheel of Fortune host starting in September?

Finals week is killing me so I won't have time to do a deep dive into all the artists until this weekend but based on the alumni names I'm most excited for Hailey and Alyssa (lol) atm.

I'm definitely looking forward to reading any of your thoughts about the artists. And finals week? For some reason, I thought you were a lot older than that, unless, of course, you teach, which I think is great.

  12. I'd honestly really like to hear Mara sing Summertime Sadness or Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Rey. And I think Lila needs to sing something more current. Perhaps Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God) by Kate Bush might be good for her to cover. I think she should also look into possibly singing Try, Bubbly, Fallin' for You or Realize by Colbie Caillat, A Thousand Years by Christina Perri, Willow, Delicate or Anti-Hero by Taylor Swift or Lights or Anything Could Happen by Ellie Goulding. As far as Nini is concerned, I think she should give strong consideration to singing Paint It, Black by The Rolling Stones, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by The Eurythmics, One by U2 or Sheryl Crow's version of Sweet Child O' Mine. That's all I have for right now.

I personally don’t want a pop diva song choice for Nini. I have no reason to believe she won’t do well on it but with the voice she has, I can’t help but feel like not going the rock lane would be missed potential.

I agree with you that I think it would be wise for Nini to continue to cover more rock-oriented songs. And I honestly don't think Use Somebody would be a bad song choice for her since I think she could sing the heck out of it. Plus, I think it would be very interesting to hear a female cover version of the song. If she must sing a more pop-oriented song, I hope she covers something by Pink, like Just Like Fire, Who Knew or Please Don't Leave Me.

  14. My constructive critique for Nini and honestly, for all the members of the top 12, is pick a genre of songs you'd like to sing and stick with it. I feel Nini should continue singing rock songs or if she must sing something outside that genre, something by a more rock-oriented pop singer, like Pink, might work.

    11) Kara Tenae - Gwen (SWV, JoJo, Ella Mai, Brandy). Despite the presence of record labels in LA, it's rare to have a LA-adjacent native advance far on these shows, so shoutout to Riverside's Kara for doing just that. Kara's what I call a "nostalgic feels" singer - choosing songs that naturally exude emotion and make you reminisce about the '90s, and she takes it to another level. Ton of brownie points for the JoJo song. The artists she's performed all definitely belong in the same playlist, so she's found an absolute niche that makes sense (and also makes sense for her). She's an older millennial, but for a 37-year old she presents younger - performance wise she feels younger than Huntley, who's actually younger than her. She wears her millennial influences hard, and also has natural swag (although that works against her on this show).  Again, like AZÁN, she'll present herself well, but sadly for this audience, swag=aggressive=no bueno. So is there a base for her ideas - er, I mean, for her song choices?

I just wanted to clarify something about Kara. She is 34, not 37. But, I agree with your power ranking placement of her, unfortunately.

I’d be inclined to agree with these points but Gina’s breakout moment last season was literally with “Wicked Game” lol

But, what song that has been covered a lot could she get by with singing because maybe she could do something a little bit different with it? I really don't think there's anything different that she could possibly do with House of the Rising Sun or Piece of My Heart to make them more interesting.

  17. My latest unpopular opinion is that I didn't think Mara's playoff performance was as good as some posters made it out to seem like it was. I loved the song choice, but I just didn't enjoy the performance nearly as much as I was expecting to. Oh, and I actually really appreciated what Huntley did for a change as well.

Not sure if a comment like this has been made already bc I haven't been lurking as much as usual this season...

Y'all know how there is a pop/soul, powerhouse "songbook" on singing shows? Songs like I Have Nothing, Hallelujah, Natural Woman, etc. I feel like Nini's song choices have all been songs from the "alt/rock" pop girl song book. I See Red, River, Heart of Glass... whats next? House of the Rising Sun? Piece of My Heart?

Obviously Karma Police was a great song choice and almost made me want to stan but everything else she has done thus far has felt very uninspiring and on the nose for me. It's unfortunate because the vocals and stage presence are clearly there.

I totally agree with you about this and really hope House of the Rising Sun or Piece of My Heart isn't next. If Nini wants to potentially make it to the finale and win, I think she has to make more strategic song choices. I'd love to hear her sing something like Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve just because I think she could do a great job with it and it hasn't been covered to death before. And I think Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson could also be an interesting song for her to cover.

  19. Nini is definitely one of my favorite contestants this season and I'm really interested to see how she wants to showcase herself as an artist on the show. I think she would be wise to continue to stick to singing songs in the rock genre. I'd love to hear her cover something like In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins. It hasn't been covered to death on singing shows and I feel she could really put her own unique spin on it, especially if she sings some of it a capella. I also wonder if something like Sheryl Crow's version of Sweet Child O' Mine, the Eurythmics Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) or One by U2 might be interesting for her to cover. And I, too, think she would sound pretty good singing a Heart or Evanescence song. In addition, I think she could do a great job covering an Alanis Morissette song. If she does want to sing more of a pop song, I think Just Like Fire by Pink might be a good song for her to cover. Even though it's been covered a lot on singing shows, I think she could do a great job singing I Put A Spell On You as well. And if she really wants to challenge herself, I'd love to hear her sing something like Bittersweet Symphony or The Freshman by The Verve or Use Somebody by Kings of Leon.
