Insatiable

There are a number of shows I decided between cutting here, but ultimately went with Insatiable for some reasons I'll explain in a minute. This is also a show that I have some familiarity with, so I would prefer to do a write-up on this over others I never heard of at all. Insatiable is a dark comedy-drama show released on Netflix in 2018 (although the pilot was originally ordered by The CW, who later passed on it) and starring Debby Ryan. I know her best from The Suite Life on Deck, but she also starred on Jessie, both on Disney Channel. I remember hearing about this show, and was kind of interested in checking it out, but never got to it. ^_^ The show is based on a New York Times article called "The Pageant King of Alabama" published in 2014. The story follows a teenager named Patty who went on a three month liquid diet over summer break, and went from being overweight to thin. She decides to seek revenge on everyone who bullied her when she was heavier. A beauty pageant couch also sets his eyes on her to make her a pageant queen. Here is the trailer, which I remember watching last year:

The show's premise was met with quite a bit of controversy, including a petition of more than 230,00 signatures requesting for the show's cancellation before it even began. It was accused of fat shaming, although the show's creator and stars defended it by saying they are addressing the damage of fat shaming through comedy. There is probably a fine line there. The show went on to receive unfavorable reviews from the audience and critics alike, with it having a 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and negative reviews from TV critics. It has been criticized for its use of stereotypes against a wide array of people, as well as misunderstanding the reality of people who are actually fat shamed. I would also think there'd be criticism over the unhealthy aspect of fad diets and dangerous ways to lose weight. I haven't actually seen the show to form my own opinion on all the critiques, but I thought it was reason enough to make this a fair cut, over some other shows that may be more liked and have aired for longer. I hope nobody is too bothered by this. :flowers: The show did release a second season this past October though, which surprises me, as I had no idea it was picked up for another season. That is good for it and its fans, and hopefully there is less controversy surrounding the newer episodes.

Burn Notice

IPB Image

IPB Image

I have once again cut a show I don’t know and I can’t even remember if I heard of Burn Notice or not but hmm… I want to say that I have? But let’s get to know this show now. Burn Notice is an Espionage, action drama that airs on USA Network. The show lasted from June 28 2007 trough September 12, 2013, lasting 7 seasons and 111 episodes - and a movie. The show stars Jeffery Donovan, Gabrielle Anwar, Bruce Campbell, Sharon Gless and Coby Bell. Burn Notice is about and refers to the burn notices issued y intelligence agencies to discredit or showcase the dismissal of agents who are viewed as unreliable. When the spies are burned, their connection to an espionage organization becomes destroyed which takes their power and control away - as well as no control of their cash or any kind of influence. The show tells its story from a second person narrative and features many voice-overs including the exposition from the viewpoint of the covert operations agent Michael Westen (the lead character played by Jeffery Donovan).

The show sounds quite interesting but also not really a show I don’t think I would be interested in.

ADVENTURE TIME

Adventure time is this cartoon show that started showing when I was a bit old to like cartoons but I gave it a try and it was actually good. I'm cutting this because I don't like Finn at all. He's so annoying and I can't stand it. I watch a couple of episodes but I dont know if I ever watched the very first episode. I know that Finn is an extinct species being a human in their world. I have no clue why he wears that mask or bonnet or whatever. Marcelline is the best thing about the show and her voice is the best. I love her songs about her dad eating her fries and the other one where they try to sing individually to open that gate with mouths. Jake is tolerable and so is Princess Bubblegum. Oh! I love Lumpy Space Princess too! She slays with her voice and her bad bitch attitude. Anyway, that's all I can really say about the show. Adventure time is about their adventure. Slay.

The fat shaming is such a bullshit excuse to be part of the csncel culture. Unless you really watched the whole show and tried to understand it, I don't think people can have an opinion about it.

Hellcats is a show about cheerleading filled with comedy & drama - essentially, they tried to make Bring It On into a series. The show was broadcast on CW, as expected - they do not have the best track record for TV shows. It also stars Aly Michalka, Ashley Tisdale, Robbie Jones, Heather Hemmens, Matt Barr, Gail O'Grady, and Sharon Leal - I assume some went onto this show to get away from their Disney persona.

So what is this show about? According to Wikipedia, Marti Perkins (Aly Michalka) is the main character & she is a pre-law college student. She unfortunately lost her scholarship when the college cut the fund - she was getting the fund due to her mom's employment. To continue getting the education, she has no choice but to turn to cheerleading where the squad is known as Hellcats. She meets her new roommate and cheerleading captain, Savannah aka Ashley's character... Anyway, the squad is under pressure to win the nationals or their funding will get cut. The entire crew needs to face challenges while preparing for nationals. Since the show got cancelled after 1 season so I am curious to see if they won the Nationals - it seems like we do not because Marti gets a call from her dad? And Savannah's ditch the crew to be by her sisters' side while giving brith.

Anyway, I have no interest in watching this show & knowing that it was cancelled after 1 season, I will never watch it. Plus the fact it was cancelled after 1 season, it makes this cut even easier.

The Mentalist

IPB Image

I'll be super honest, I threw the remaining shows in the randomizer and saved the 1st and cut the last. This is why we need to stop throwing this much fodder in people :* Since I don't know either, Wikipedia will guide me through this most difficult time.

The Mentalist was a drama series that ran for 7 seasons (and I never heard from it? Impressive) on CBS. The show is centered around a psychic (ok, maybe I heard from it and dismissed it straight away bc of this) who acts as a consultant for the police (ok, this is starting to make sense on why I would avoid it if I ever heard from it), who used his highly developed observational skills to act like he's reading people's minds. I don't know who came up with the concept for this show, but please never try it again.

Child Support

IPB Image

Decided to cut another game show I really haven’t heard of, since I still think it’s hard to compare them to the actual scripted shows. Child Support is a quiz-based tv show that aired on ABC in 2018 for a total of 16 episodes. The show was hosted by Fred Savage and Ricky Gervais. The format of the show is that Fred Savage would pose a trivia question to an adult player which they would have to answer. If they get the answer correct, they move on and the money they’ve earned increases. If they get the question wrong, Ricky Gervais asks the same question to a group of five children backstage. If any of the children get the question correct, the player moves on but no money is added. The player needs to answer ten questions correctly to win, and the maximum total pot would be $200,000. Basically the show sounds like a cross between “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” and “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader.” Interesting concept, but I can see why it didn’t take off.

Saving: Even Stevens (honestly a toss up, but this one was the most familiar to me of all of those remaining).
