ELLIOTT
13. Lady and the Tramp (1955)
I love dogs, so naturally I'm putting Lady and the Tramp here. It'd be higher if it hasn't aged terribly in regards to some of the characterizations, but I still really enjoy the central plot between Lady and the Tramp. It also helped that Tramp reminded me of a dog I had growing up, so there was that too. :haha: I didn't really enjoy the sequel that came out a while back, but the dogs in the live action version debuting on Disney Plus look adorable, so I'm excited to check that out.

WALLACE
Lady and the Tramp (1955)
I’m placing Lady and the Tramp at #17 as that was a film I really enjoyed that i saw as a kid, but I just prefer the other films in my Top 16 more. Of course the movie is known for that iconic scene of the two dogs sharing eating a spaghetti noodle and about to kiss, which was adorable. I’ll share it below.

This is not a movie that I would consider to be a classic Disney movie - in fact, I’m a bit surprised that they decided to turn it into a live-action movie for Disney+. And if there is a movie in this Top 30 where my feelings towards it can be described as indifferent, is is “Lady & The Tramp” - I don’t remember much about the movie beside the iconic spaghetti scene and “
”, despite the song not having aged well.

This film is one of my moms favorite Disney films if not her favorite so I have very fond memories of this movie as a kid. We had a lot of dogs growing up so movies like Lady and the Tramp, One Hundred and One Dalmatians, Air Bud, Old Yeller and Homeward Bound have always appealed to me. I love dogs so I loved this movie. :haha: This movie does have a problematic scene in the film that I will touch on later but for now let me start this write-up.

Lady and the Tramp is a 1955 American animated musical romance film produced by Walt Disney and released by Buena Vista Distribution. It's Disney 15th animated feature film and it was the first animated feature filmed in the CinemaScope widescreen film process. I never that so that is interesting to learn. The movie is based on the Cosmopolitan magazine story of "Happy Dan, The Cynical Dog" by Ward Greene. A film based on a magazine story? That's a first. Lady and the Tramp tells the story of a female cocker spaniel named Lady who lives with a refined, upper-middle-class family and a male stray mutt called the Tramp. The two dogs meet, they embark on many romantic adventures and fall in love. So let me give you a breakdown of what happens in this film in further detail. Jim Dear gives his wife Darling a puppy named Lady. Lady has a wonderful life and has two friends a Scottish terrier named Jock and a bloodhound named Trusty. Across the town is a mutt named Tramp who spends his time getting scraps from Tony's Italian restaurant and helping his friends Peg (a Pekingese) and Bull (a bulldog) escape the local dogcather. Meanwhile, Lady is upset because she notices a change in attitude from her owners but it's because they are expecting a baby. Jock and Trusy try to explain to Lady what a baby is when Tramp interrupts and give his own opinion on the matter. Trusty and Jock bark for him to leave the yard but not before Tramp gives Lady this one warning: "When a baby moves in, a dog moves out."

The baby comes and Lady is very fond and protective of it. Jim and Darling leave for vacation and leave Lady and the baby with their dog-hating Aunt Sarah. Sarah bring her two mischievous Siamese cats, Si and Am. They destroy the house and make it seem like it was Lady's doing so Sarah takes Lady the pet shop to get a muzzle. Frightened by the muzzle she runs away. She is chased by three stray dogs but Tramp having seen her helps her from them. Tramp helps get here muzzle off with the help of a beaver. Tramp shows her how to live collar free and they have a candlelit dinner at Tony's Italian restaurant. They share a plate of spaghetti and thus the most iconic scene from the movie is born.

Lady starts to fall in love with Tramp. She chooses to go back home though to watch over the baby. She is captured by the local dogcatcher though and it's there where Lady meets some of Tramp's old flames. Tramp is described as a player and he will never settle down. Lady is eventually claimed by Aunt Sarah who chains her to the backyard. Tramp comes to apologize to Lady but Lady isn't having it. She lashes out to him about his past girlfriends and not saving her from the pound. Tramp leaves but a rat enters the house just as he leaves. Lady barks but is unable to get to the house due to her being chained up. Tramp hears the barks and goes into the house to chase the rat. He kills the rat but knocks over the crib; Lady breaks free so is also there. Aunt Sarah thinking they harmed the baby puts Tramp in the closet and locks Lady in the basement. She calls the pound to take Tramp away. Jim and Darling return and when they release Lady she leads them to the dead rat. Overhearing everything that has transpired Jock and Trusty chase after the dogcatcher's wagon. The dogs are able to track down the wagon and scare the horses causing the wagon to crash. Jim arrives in a taxi with Lady who reunites with Tramp. Trusty was almost killed in the accident but survives. The story ends with it being Christmas. Tramp has been adopted into the family and he and Lady have started their own family. Lady and Tramp have four children; three girls who look like Lady and one son who looks like Tramp. <3 <3 <3 <3 The film has two notable songs I remember, "The Siamese Cat Song"

This song was by Peggy Lee. It has some racist undertones to it and was therefore removed from the live-action adaption of the film.

The iconic "Bella Notte" that was used during the intro scene and the spaghetti scene. I've always loved this song and always think of Lady and the Tramp when I hear it.

Lady and the Tramp was released to theaters on June 22, 1955 to box office success. It initially received mixed to negative reviews by film critics but critical reception for the film has been generally positive in modern times. The film is now seen as one of the best animated films from Disney. The film has a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie cost $4 million to make and made $187 million at the box office. A sequel was released in 2006 entitled Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure. Lady and the Tramp has the distinction of being the first animated feature film to be made into live-action to premier on Disney+ on launch day. ^_^

I love my dogs and of course I love a dog love story. :wub:Lady and the Tramp is iconic. The movie tells the story of Lady, a cocker spaniel, who lives a rather polished lifestyle among her owners in their home, and Tramp, a stray who lives out on the streets. So opposites attract, right? Lady is gifted to her human mom by the husband and I have thoughts on that. :bye2: At least they did want to have a dog, so all would be well. And baby Lady is so cute! I especially love when she keeps sneaking out of her bed, but... people, let your dog share your bed! (!) I think Lady is possibly even cuter as she grows up and oh so glamorous.

She also cracks me up sometimes. :lmao:

However, Lady finds herself in a situation when her human parents are expecting a baby and they start to treat her differently. Her doggie friends, Jock and Trusty, fill her in on what this means for her future. Thankfully, it all turns out alright as Lady takes a liking to the human infant... but then things go south again when the family leaves on vacation and Lady is stuck behind with Aunt Sarah and her evil Siamese cats. :ermm: They all hate Lady and will do anything to punish her. But LOL I remember randomly singing that Siamese cat song with my friends at school when we were younger. :dead: No idea why, but I guess it gets stuck in the head easily. Anyway, a series of events end up with Lady in a muzzle, running away on her own, and meeting Tramp. He helps her get out of the muzzle with an assist from a beaver, and then of course... the ICONIC spaghetti scene.

LEGENDS ONLY. Sadly, Lady and Tramp's relationship doesn't come easy, as she wants to go home to watch after the baby, but ends up being taken to the pound. :ermm: She's mad at Tramp for not saving her, as he was too busy chasing chickens when it all happened. He apologizes, but Lady learned about his ~dating history~ from dogs at the pound, so it's still not smooth sailing. However, Tramp saves the baby infant from an intruding rat, which Wally would be pleased about, and that seems to bring him and Lady back together. Of course Aunt Sarah is still around having her say and Tramp gets taken to the pound... Lady's friends are able to catch the truck and save Tramp though! Him and Lady reunite and ALL IS WELL. Tramp moves in, they have puppies, and Lady's friends come around more to interact with their babies.

Lady and Tramp are such a beloved Disney couple. I've always loved them as characters, although I don't have as strong an attachment to the story as other movies. There is a live action movie of this coming to Disney+, or that will already be here once this is posted, and I will be interested in seeing that as well.
