A true, die-hard fan knows how many points Luxembourg got in 1980 (56), who came last in 1972 (Malta, with 48 points) and how many times the Netherlands got 12 points in 1996 (once, from Austria). Because no one can expect you to become a living Eurovision Song Contest encyclopedia, Eurovision.tv takes you through the contest's history in fast forward. It's all you need to know before you dive into the rich history of the Eurovision Song Contest... How it all begun The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) was formed on 12th February 1950 by 23 broadcasting organisations from Europe and the Mediterranean at a conference in Devon, United Kingdom. It was on the 6th of June, 1954, that Montreux became the venue for the first transmission by the EBU's Eurovision Network of the Narcissus Festival and its flower-bedecked procession floats. "Did you know that not only stars like ABBA, Celine Dion, Cliff Richard and Julio Iglesias took part, but also dance act Riverdance thanks its fame to the Eurovision Song Contest?" The first Eurovision viewers eagerly watched on four million television sets in homes, bars, and shop windows in Germany, Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Ambitious project In 1955, the EBU came up with the idea of an international song contest whereby countries, represeted by their respective public broadcasters, would participate in one television show, to be transmitted simultaneously in all represented nations. This was conceived during a meeting in Monaco in 1955 by Marcel Bezençon, a Frenchman working for the EBU. The competition was based upon the Italian Festival di Sanremo, held for the first time in 1951, and was also seen as a technological experiment in live television: in those days, it was a very ambitious project to join many countries together in a wide-area international network. Satellite television did not exist yet at that time, and the Eurovision Network comprised a terrestrial microwave network. Le Grand-Prix Eurovision de la Chanson Européenne was born! The successes Without interruption, the Eurovision Song Contest has been broadcast every year since 1956, which makes it one of the longest-running television programmes in the world. In 2003, the first ever Junior Eurovision Song Contest took place, while the Eurovision Song Contest celebrated her 50th anniversity 2005. Viewers picked ABBA's Waterloo as best ever Eurovision Song Contest song. 2008 running saw a record of 43 represented countries, as Azerbaijan and San Marino joined the family. The competition has been broadcast throughout Europe, but also in Australia, Canada, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Jordan, Korea, New Zealand and the United States, even though these countries do not participate. In 2010, the format will be launched outside of Europe so that various other parts of the world will be introduced to the concept behind the show. In 2005, the Eurovision Song Contest celebrated its 50th anniversary by picking the best entry to date. About Sweden Sweden (Sverige in Swedish) is the largest of the Nordic countries, with a population of about 9.3 million. It borders Norway and Finland and is connected to Denmark via the bridge of Öresund (Öresundsbron). The Baltic Sea lies to the east of Sweden, as well as the Gulf of Bothnia, which separates Sweden from most of Finland. The northernmost part of Sweden belongs to the Arctic. Although having been a military power and spanning about three times its current size during the 17th century, Sweden has not participated in any war in almost two hundred years. Having long remained outside military alliances (including both World Wars), the country has a high peace profile, with internationally renowned names such as Raoul Wallenberg, Dag Hammarskjöld, Olof Palme and Hans Blix. Sweden is a monarchy by constitution, but king Carl XVI Gustaf has no executive power. The Swedish people were Pagans until around the year 1000, then Christened and obedient to the Roman Pope until the 16th century, when the church was reformed to Lutheran-Protestant. Today's Sweden is a secular state with very few church-goers. Sweden is a developed post-industrial society with an advanced welfare state. The standard of living and life expectancy rank among the highest in the world. Sweden has a strong tradition of being an open, yet discreet country. Citizens sometimes appear to be quite reserved at first, but once they get to know who they are dealing with, they'll be as warm and friendly as you'd wish. Sweden houses the Nobel Prize committee for all the prizes except the peace prize which is hosted in Oslo, a memento of the Swedish-Norwegian union that was dissolved in 1905. About Malmö Being the Host City of the Eurovision Song Contest is one of the biggest honours in Europe! Okey, we might be a bit biased but it's very close to the truth. In 2013 it'll be Malmö who will be hosting Europe's favourite decision How was Malmö chosen? The decision about the host city was open till the very last minute, SVT says. They received proposals from Stockholm and Malmö. "It was not really an easy decision," Martin Österdahl, Executive Producer of the 2013 contest says. "We chose Malmö because there is a very good infrastructure and we have good experience of holding Melodifestivalen [the Swedish national selection] and the Eurovision Song Contest there," he explains. "The choice of Malmö is based on an overall assessment of the environment in which we think is best for the format of the Eurovision Song Contest, both in terms of TV shows and on the preparations." "We are very pleased to have a Host City already at this stage. It shows the deep commitment SVT and the whole of Sweden have to host a great Eurovision Song Contest in 2013," says Jon Ola Sand, Executive Supervisor on behalf of the EBU. "We're confident Malmö will be a great host for next year's edition of Europe's favourite TV show." The agreement means that SVT is responsible for all aspects related to TV shows and Malmö will support you with a comprehensive hosting service, logistics and events for the international press, the visiting fans and the participating delegations. "Now the work starts on one of the biggest music shows in Europe to create an amazing event. We are obviously extremely proud and happy today," says Ilmar Reepalu, Mayor of Malmö. By choosing Malmö and the Malmö Arena on Sunday, the groundwork for the Eurovision Song Contest has been laid. Christer Björkman, one of the organisers, believes that an unforgettable world can be created around the event. "By arranging the event in Malmö, we believe that we can create a Eurovision Song Contest in its true spirit, where focus lies with the heart and the artists. We are going to create a Eurovision world that will be an amazing experience for everyone that visits the city", he says. "We know after several years of organising Melodifestivalen (the Swedish national selection) at the Malmö Arena that we can create an immensely good atmosphere there with all the emotions that we believe belong to the Eurovision Song Contest. Now we are incredibly charged to reach new creative heights with the shows". About Malmö Malmö is the third largest city in Sweden and one of the largest ones in Scandinavia with a metro population of 664,000 people. It has easy access to Denmark via the Øresund bridge which is the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe. The city is part of the expanding Öresund region and is joined to Copenhagen in Denmark by the mighty, arching Öresund bridge. For all the expansion, Malmö is a small, friendly city with a good choice of cultural attractions, including the new Moderna Museet Malmö. Look out for Malmö’s many quality restaurants and bistros and great cafés. And the shopping isn’t bad either, especially if you’re looking for Swedish design-ware and hip, new Swedish fashion labels. Malmö has already hosted the contest once, back in 1992 after the Swedish pop-star Carola won the contest in 1991 with Fångad Av En Stormvind. How does it work? The national selections for the Eurovision Song Contest are being organised by the participating national public broadcasters. Traditionally, in March, participating broadcasters have to come up with their entry for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. The EBU, main organiser of the Eurovision Song Contest, is not involved with the national selections. The EBU only requires the national selections to be fair and transparent. When? The national selections start already very soon after the previous Eurovision Song Contest. To get a full overview and put the dates down in your calendar, see the timetable in our calendar! How to take part? In the lead up to the Eurovision Song Contest, national selections take place in the represented countries. These national selections are being organized by the respective national public broadcasters who are Active Members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). In the United Kingdom, the BBC is taking care of the national selection, in Sweden it's SVT, in Germany it's NDR, etc. Good to know * First of all, it is important to know that the EBU is not involved in the national selections. It is entirely up to the participating broadcasters to decide how they pick their entry. However, the EBU does demand full transparency on the chosen procedure * In most countries, televised national selections take place, and usually anyone can send in songs. A selection committee then picks the songs that will take part in the national selection, and a jury or viewers (or a mix of both) decide upon the winner * Some broadcasters pick their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest internally. A selection committee then picks the representing artists, and sometimes also the song to be performed Sending in your song To take part in the Eurovision Song Contest, you need to win a national selection, or be selected by one of the participating broadcasters. * Keep an eye on announcements made by your national public broadcaster. Usually, these announcements are made available through their website, and include details on how to send in your song * Note that not all broadcasters accept songs from foreigh artists, song writers and composers * If there is no public broadcaster in your country taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest, it is not possible to represent your country. To take part in the Eurovision Song Contest, you would have to enter your song for nomination in another country. Should you be selected to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest, you will then of course represent the respective country Note that most broadcasters set their deadlines to submit songs somewhere between September and December. If you sent in your song, the respective public broadcaster will inform you whether you have been selected for the national final, or not. From there, everything speaks for itself; you will have to win the national selection to represent the respective country at the Eurovision Song Contest. The contest will take place in Malmö, Sweden, following Loreen's win in the 2012 Contest with the song "Euphoria". Three cities expressed interests to host the contest, and on 8 July 2012, the host broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT) decided upon the Malmö Arena as the venue. This will be the fifth time that Sweden has played host and the second time that Malmö has been the host city to the contest, having previously played host city to the 1992 Contest. The dates set for the two semi-finals are 14 May and 16 May 2013, with the final taking place on the evening of 18 May 2013. Location Malmö Arena in Malmö was announced by Swedish broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT) as the venue for the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest on 8 July 2012. This will be the fifth time after 1975, 1985, 1992 and 2000 that the competition is held in Sweden and the second time, after 1992 that it will be held in Malmö. Malmö, in the southernmost province of Scania, is Sweden's third largest city by population after Stockholm and Gothenburg, and is one of the largest cities in Scandinavia. Malmö is the seat of Malmö Municipality and the capital of Skåne County. The administrative entity for most of the city is Malmö Municipality which has 303,873 inhabitants in eight different localities, with 30% being of foreign origin (either born outside of Sweden or having both parents born abroad). Malmö is also a bimunicipal locality, as part of it is formally situated in Burlöv Municipality. The total population of the urban area was 280,415 in December 2010. Bidding phase On the night of the win, the chief executive of Sveriges Television (SVT), Eva Hamilton, stated to Swedish media that venues in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö were being considered as host venues for the 2013 Contest. The most recent host arena, the Ericsson Globe, used for the 2000 Contest, is however booked for the World Ice Hockey Championships, and will not be available to host the Eurovision Song Contest on the scheduled dates. One alternative put forward in Expressen was to hold the competition at three different venues – the semi-finals in Gothenburg and Malmö – and the final in Stockholm. This idea was dismissed by SVT due to the resulting complex logistics and as a result it has been confirmed that both semi-finals and the final will occur in just one city. On 20 June 2012, it was announced that Gothenburg had withdrawn from the bidding process due to their hosting of the Göteborg Horse Show in late April. There were also concerns about the availability of hotel rooms in the city due to a variety of other events taking place during the same time frame. The following candidate cities had provisionally reserved venues and hotel rooms, as part of their bids to host the 2013 Contest. On 8 July 2012, Malmö Arena was confirmed as the host venue for the contest. SVT has expressed the desire to host the contest at a slightly smaller venue than previous years to increase the Eurovision experience thereby the choice of Malmö Arena. The executive producer for the Eurovision in Malmö, Martin Österdahl told Swedish press that he did not like the fact that the Eurovision had been hosted in big arenas over the last few years. And that a bigger arena did not make Eurovision better, pointing to Eurovision 2001 in Denmark as an example, and that he and SVT wants Eurovision 2013 to be more close and personal and that they want to take "The Eurovision experience to the next level". And with all the events surrounding Eurovision to be held close to the Malmö Arena so the artists can walk to the events and with no bus rides like in the last years. The choice of Malmö Arena as host of the Eurovision Song Contest has been criticized by Swedes who overall had preferred to host it in Stockholm at the Friends Arena. SVT has defended their decision of hosting it in Malmö. SVT and Österdahl also points to European Broadcasting Union (EBU)'s wishes to keep Eurovision slightly smaller for 2013 as the event and costs has grown bigger and bigger, but also says that the decisions and preparations for the 2013 edition of the contest are fully up to SVT. Format Ticket sale On 11 July 2012, the Swedish production group and show producer Christer Björkman advised fans not to buy the tickets that currently are in circulation and to wait for tickets from official Eurovision channels. Björkman said that there was still a long way to go, until the official tickets would be released, due to the seating plan and stage plan not being completed yet. Björkman also reassured Eurovision fans that accommodation options would be made available for the people that are going to travel to Malmö for the contest and that the organisation had booked a large quantity of hotel rooms for delegations and etcetera, some which may later be released to the general public. Swedish website Biljett Nu started selling tickets before they were even released. The prices of tickets are between 5,000–7,000 Swedish kronor (€600–850). Information about official ticket sale will be released at the end of August Participating countries If your trying to find out the different countrys finalists pleas go to the top and look for “semi 1” “semi 2” ”finale” Other countries Andorra – At a meeting with the head of the EBU, Ingrid Deltenre, Andorran Prime Minister, Antoni Martí, said that Andorra will not return for the 2013 contest due to investment cuts. Bosnia and Herzegovina – Bosnia and Herzegovina will not participate in Eurovision Song Contest 2013 because of hard economical situation that the national broadcaster is facing. Czech Republic – Czech broadcaster Česká televize (ČT) have announced that they have no intention of participating in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest. However, they haven't ruled out a return in 2014. Greece – On 29 November 2012, Greek broadcaster Ellinikí Radiofonía Tileórasi (ERT), announced that due to budget cuts caused by the Greek government-debt crisis, the participation of Greece in the 2013 Contest was in doubt Liechtenstein – The head of 1 Fürstentum Liechtenstein Television (1FLTV), Peter Kölbel, had said that due to a lack of financial subsidies from the Government of Liechtenstein, participation would be impossible until 2013 at the earliest. 1FLTV have been trying to join the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) since 2010, however the government has not granted the nation's only channel the necessary subsidies. Kölbel stated that the country had a good chance of joining the contest in 2013, if funding was approved, but it was later announced that the country would not be participating Luxembourg – On 13 September 2012, RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg announced that they would not return to the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö due to a lack of available resources. Monaco – On 24 September 2012, Télé Monte Carlo (TMC) confirmed that Monaco will not return to the 2013 Contest for unspecified reasons. Morocco – On 20 September 2012, Société Nationale de Radiodiffusion et de Télévision (SNRT) confirmed Morocco would not be returning for the 2013 Contest, although reasons for this decision have not been published Poland – A decision by Telewizja Polska (TVP) regarding a return to the 2013 Contest will be made in October 2012. Poland withdrew in 2012 due to the broadcasters primary financial focus being on the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship (which Poland co-hosted with Ukraine) along with the London 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. On 22 November 2012, TVP officially announced the country wouldn't be returning in 2013. Portugal – On 22 November 2012, Portuguese broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) confirmed that Portugal will not be taking part in the 2013 Contest. A return in 2014 has not been ruled out. Slovakia – On 4 December 2012, Slovakian broadcaster Rozhlas a televízia Slovenska (RTVS), announced that Slovakia would not be participating in the 2013 Contest. Turkey – On 14 December 2012, Turkish broadcaster Türkiye Radyo ve Televizyon Kurumu (TRT) announced their withdrawal from the contest, citing dissatisfaction with the introduction of a mixed jury/televote voting system and the status of the "Big Five". Focus Malmö: Transport
![]() Malmö, Sweden - In the first of a series of articles to help you get to know next year's host city Malmö, we start by taking a look at how you get to the city and get around when you are there. The 2013 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö will be one of the best connected in recent times, with multiple options for a) getting to the city and Getting to Malmö Let's take a look at some of the options with regards to getting to Malmö. Copenhagen Kastrup Airport Copenhagen Airport is by far the biggest air transport hub in the Nordic region, with plenty of direct flights to and from all over Europe and the World and a major hub for Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and Norwegian Air Shuttle amongst others. We envisage that the majority of visitors to Malmö next year will arrive into Copenhagen, due to its size and the fact that it is by far the closest airport to the Malmö Arena, which is located just a 15 minute train journey from the airport over the Öresund Bridge. As well as trains, there are busses connecting the airport with Malmö and other cities in Southern Sweden and outside the airport terminal there is a dedicated taxi rank for Swedish taxis, for those who prefer a more hassle-free journey to their hotels. Malmö Sturup Airport Located a 40 minute drive from the centre of Malmö is Sturup Airport, offering a wide range of domestic and international flights. The airport is popular destination for Eastern European carriers such as Wizz Air and SAS, Norwegian and Malmö Aviation all operate domestic flights within Sweden, with a major link to Stockholm Bromma and Arlanda airports. Although further away from the Arena and city than Copenhagen Airport, Malmö airport offers and option for people with a more limited budget and has a regular and inexpensive bus link to the city centre. The airport has also recently undergone some renovation works to create a better experience for passengers. Trains Another option for travel getting to Malmö is by train. As mentioned above, there is a regular and fast train service between Copenhagen, Copenhagen Airport and Malmö operated by Øresundståg, transversing the bridge between the Danish capital and Malmö. A city centre to city centre travel time of 25 should be expected whilst it takes just 15 minutes from Copenhagen Airport to Hyllie Station, which is where the Malmö Arena is located. Sweden also has a very well developed domestic train network operated by SJ, who operate long distance high-speed trains from Malmö to both Stockholm and Gothenburg as well as night train services and local services in the Skåne region of Sweden, operated by Skånetrafiken. Night trains are also available from Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany into Copenhagen where regular connections depart to Malmö as mentioned above. In addition there are semi-regular trains operating between Hamburg, Berlin and Copenhagen operated by DSB and DB, providing an alternative route for those living in northern Germany. Buses If you have time and/or are on a limited budget, then why not take the bus to Malmö. A number of companies offer long distance services to the city from locations both inside Sweden and out. An example is Eurolines who operate three times a week from Oslo, via Gothenburg to Malmö and Copenhagen as well as from Stockholm. Car If you prefer to travel by car to Malmö, there are plenty of opportunities to park in the city, with many hotels offering on site parking to their guests. Malmö is an important interchange for motorways in southern Scandinavia with fast and smooth roads connecting the city with amongst others Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Stockholm and Trelleborg, where ferries go to Poland and Germany. In addition the well developed motorway network in Denmark will take you to Germany relatively fast. Boat As mentioned above there are a number of ferry options for those wishing a very leisurely journey to Malmö. From nearby Trelleborg, ferries travel to Germany and Poland and from Copenhagen there is a daily ferry service to Oslo. In addition regular ferries between Helsingør in Denmark and Helsingborg in Sweden provide an alternative to the Öresund Bridge. It is also possible to travel relatively easy between the United Kingdom and Malmö using a mixture of ferry and car with a ferry service connecting the town of Harwich with Esbjerg in western Denmark. From there the E20 motorway will take you all the way to Malmö, over the Öresund Bridge with a total journey time of about 24 hours. Getting Around Malmö Getting around Malmö and the surrounding area could not be easier. Let's take a look at the options: Buses Malmö has a very well developed bus network, utilising very environmentally friendly buses and connecting every corner of the city with the centre and beyond. Local transport is operated by Skånetrafiken who are also reponsible for local trains. City busses 5, 6 and 33 all stop at Hyllie Station, where the Malmö Arena is located and regional busses 346, 300 and 170 from Trelleborg, Falsterbro and Lund respectively also stop here. Local Trains Known as Pågåtågen, and painted in a distinct purple colour, a frequent commuter train service is operated from both Malmö Central Station and Hyllie Station connecting local stops within the City as well as travelling beyond to towns and cities in northern and southern Skåne. A journey from Hyllie to Malmö Central typically takes between 7 and 9 minutes. Öresund Trains Officially known as Øresundstågen (combining the Danish name "Øresund" with the Swedish word "Tåg"), these trains operate between Southern Sweden and Sjælland in Denmark using the Öresund Bridge. A regular service operates between Malmö and Copenhagen (every 10 minutes during the day from Malmö Central and every 20 minutes from Hyllie) with some services travelling beyond to Gothenburg, Helsingborg, Kalmar, Växjö, and Helsingør as examples. As mentioned above all trains stop at Copenhagen Airport providing a connection from here to Hyllie station in less than 15 minutes. Car There are good parking opportunities in and around Malmö although this comes at a price and near the arena parking appears to be good. However, at this stage it is unknown how parking around the Malmö Arena will be affected leading up to and during the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest. Cycling Just like its neighbouring city, Copenhagen, Malmö has a very well developed cycle network and is very flat making it a comfortable way to travel (depending on the weather!). It is possible to hire bikes around the city and could be a fun and calorie burning alternative to the above options. --------------------

![]() DR Wants New EBU Rules on Song Publishing EBU -The Danish national broadcaster DR has asked the EBU (see pic for new logo) to review their tough rules for the date Eurovision songs may be published. The current EBU rules state that a song that participates in the Eurovision Song Contest can not have been published or performed publicly before September 1 of the preceding year. This year one of the songs in the Danish final, Nowhere by Tine Lyngaard had to be disqualified before the show, as the song had been available on YouTube and Facebook in July 2011. DR has now changed its own rules and now will only disqualify songs if they have gained an unfair advantage from being published earlier. As that prevents such a song to be disqualified from Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, it would still not be able to take part in Eurovision should it win the Danish selection. That is probably why DR has called on the EBU to change their rules as well and apparently fell on sympathetic ears: “We don’t believe EBU’s rules are up to date. Nowadays songwriters often exchange demo-versions of their songs online. They have listened to us, but it is too late to change for 2013, so they probably won’t be able to change the rules before 2014“, says DR’s entertainment boss Jan Lagermand Lundme. --------------------
