When did you realize we had a WGWG problem? Options

We all know we have 5 in a row. I want to start a discussion about the issue just a different part of it.
When did you first say "Houston we have a problem" (if it's not a problem for you still chime in)
Season 9 solidfied it for me as the top three where all WGWG (Crystal the "G" can stand for "Girl").

For me after we had three in a row I SCREAMED "HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM"

How about you?

This may get moved, I hope not as Phillip is included in this.

When Allison and Adam lost to Kris.

I could see the writing on the wall.

If a "Who?" like Kris could beat out all the personalities esp those who didn't really falter like Allison and Adam then yeah.

Sure s9 when I saw that Lee/Casey were running away with it and all the girls save Crystal were being knocked down one by one helped solidfy it.

But Adison losing to Kris was the first sign that something was going on.

While none of the WGWGs were my #1 favorite during the season, Kris, Lee and Phillip were all my 2nd faves, David Cook was my 3rd fave and Scotty was just okay for me but he's grown on me a ton after the show and I like him now.

I don't consider Scotty a WGWG. But in terms of the others (Kris, Lee, and Phillip), I noticed it when Lee won.

S7 - David Cook was arguably the most talented contestant. Very good singer. Very creative. No issue.

S8 - Allison was in the bottom 3 a lot early on, I knew she wasn't going to win. Gokey..well..he got terrible by the end of the show. And Adam was polarizing. Kris was cute, a nice guy..yea he sang off key (bothered me a bit...) but he was also creative. In fact, maybe more so than Cook. (Although not nearly the singer.) So I could see how he could win too. He was like the underdog..and once he got by Gokey, I figured all of Gokey's fans were voting for Kris.

S9- yea..there is no rational explanation for that one.

S10 - I thought we had a bit of a break through here. Scotty's done very well. He's very talented..he's very different from the three above. (He doesn't do acoustic versions of songs) and he was never labeled an "artist" by the show. (key words for "not a very good singer.") Scotty, the second I saw him..was similar to a Kelly and a Carrie...where you just know that he's going to win. And he's likely going to deserve it. (And as much as I think Haley was the best that season, I thought Scotty was easily top 5, and most likely top 3..maybe top 2).

But then S11 came, and the realization hit that Scotty simply got the WGWG demographic because there was no WGWG that season. (Plus the country vote.) There was no breakthrough with idol. We simply didn't have an "artist" S10.

BTW: I've been thinking about this. I think this issue is entirely on the judges.
Tim Urban was slammed every week. He was no different than Kris, Lee, or Phillip. Yea, he could barely sing, but so could they. He's actually better looking than all of them, arguably. (And probably has the best vocals of all of them to be honest.)

You'd think he would have been the obvious winner over Lee. But the judges pushed Lee and made the audience aware that Tim was below everyone else.

So maybe, if instead of making like Phillip was just as good of a singer as Elise (Randy) or calling people who can't sing the melodies artists, or ignoring pitch problems from these guys..the judges actually called them out on it, repeatedly, like they did with Tim, we wouldn't actually have this problem.

I wouldn't really call it a problem, but more of a statistical trend that is problematic But anyways, the last five minutes of Season 9 made me stop and say, "Wait, what just happened?"

I don't think it is a problem either - only one was my favourite (Kris) one I liked (David) and the rest I don't care for. I think blaming the WGWG's is just a feeble excuse for the falling ratings by those who don't like WGWG's. There are many other factors that are causing the ratings to fall - look how many singing contests there are now and there are more coming!

Yes he was, he was my personal 3rd fav behind Sy and Archie but if he won s11, I would be really good with that, still would have wanted Sky/Jess/Josh but 4th best in that scenario)

Allison had that momentum going on that voters love. Yes Gokey "Dream on" and personally, I didn't really like him even past my DWD hate. Yeah Adam was polarizing. And so we can explain it all away and easily makes sense Kris won. The other guy Matt needed a save. Anoop and Lil faltered live. Megan as well. Scott was a genre that wasn't going to get him far. Matt was lost in the shuffle. Jasmine/Jorge also faltered/weren't that good.

Talent = Crystal

Casey votes would go to Lee more so but all 3 were virtually similar, more so than Mclaina lolz. And the girl voters were tired all season after so many eliminations.

No wgwg? Tim Halperin was def wgwg.

But also Brett, Paul, James

There isn't that much of a country vote. Scotty def got some of them to vote. But so many country artists are only semifinalists. And besides Mclaina and Carrie, I don't count any others in the top 4. Top 5/6 yeah a few.

Yes the judges need to be critical of these contestants, early on.

Tim started off worse than Lee. He did get passsable as it went.

I'd prefer Aaron for the wgwg that season.

One can hope. I want them to judge evenly. And the wgwg winner's don't really get judged when they aren't doing well.

I like Kris.

I think the country vote and WGWG vote is a similar demographic, actually.

They will jump to a cute blonde country girl who sings pretty. (I still say Lauren wins Season 10 if there is no Scotty.) But they prefer the WGWG. And if it's a male country singer (a good one) it's all over.

I don't consider James, Paul, or Casey a WGWG. Other than Scotty, the WGWG all have musical similarities too. And tend to get branded similarly. ("artistic")

What about Tim?

And, Country vote and WGWG vote do share a lot of fans.

Country fans will more be willing to support the girls.
WGWG will more favor the boys.

There is also the white vote. Most voters identify more with their race than the other races.

When you get all that in one you get Scotty.

Without Scotty, I'm not sure if enough Country voters would have tuned in to vote. And Haley was coming in very strong. Haley was improvng and Lauren was "over hyped" Voters prefer redemption arc.

Another reason for Kris over Adam.

The perception was Kris was the underdog and Adam was so pushed that like Crystal, Jessica, Melinda it wears off just near the end.

TBH, I really liked most of the WGWGs (not Kris, but he grew on me). But I couldn't stand Scotty Just because of him, he made me dislike the WGWG thing briefly. I used to connect WGWGs with conservative ideals, but I don't see it much anymore. Besides, Idol has always been conservative.

I really don't see it as a WGWG problem per se but the dominance of contestants from certain region of the country, and they happen to favor guitar players as well.

What a coincidence also that this region of the country is where AT&T dominates as the mobile provider; and this "problem" got worse when they started having unlimited text votes.

This region of the country is where Idol viewership is the strongest. So no conspiracy and not really a problem - we're just getting the types of winners the biggest audience of the show preferred.

This is my opinion and observations.

Yes every time you bring up Kris it sounds like you are dissing him!
The ratings drop has been blamed on having the same type of singer winning idol (people getting bored etc)

Funny enough, I didn't even suspect anything after Kris won. The thought never entered my mind. I was just thinking how nice it would be to have a girl winner in Season 9. But after Lee won, that's when I started saying that this is getting ridiculous. And when Phillip won, I was just . It's just blatant now.
