RADIO FAQs
*This is a work in progress* Key Terms: Spins A spin on the Mediabase chart is essentially a play by a monitored station. The spin count that we see on the Mediabase charts each day are a compilation of the spins from all of the Monitored CHR stations on the panel over the course of the previous seven days. Bullet A bullet is a positive increase in spins over the course of a week. For example, if a song that has 1200 spins on a Monday had 1000 spins on the previous Monday, its bullet would be 200. If a song is losing spins, we say that it has “lost its bullet.” There is no such thing as a negative bullet, so if a song has a bullet it is moving up the chart. Adds A station will officially “add” a song in Mediabase when they decide to start playing it regularly. Essentially, the more adds a song gets, the more spins it is likely to receive. In a typical week, a higher amount of adds means better spin updates due to the fact that more new stations are spinning the song. In Hot AC, the adds deadline for stations is Monday at 3 PM PST, while the adds deadline for Top 40 is Tuesday at 3 PM PST. Although stations can report their adds whenever they choose, most stations report on the adds day or the business day previous. There are two types of adders, manual and auto. -Manual Adders are stations that generally add a song before playing it, or have only played it in a limited capacity (test spins, syndicated spins, etc.) prior to adding. Manual adds usually (but not always) are reported prior to a station adding the song to their regular playlist. The Add Date (or Impact Date) is the date that a record label will begin encouraging stations to play a song. Basically, it's the date that a big push will happen to get stations to add the song. Stations are free to play or add the song before this date, however. A song can chart before the add date. Recurrents A recurrent song is removed from the chart after a certain period of time if it is no longer receiving positive updates and is below a certain number. On the CHR chart, there are some new recurrent rules! For songs that have made it into the top 10, they are removed after 20 weeks on the chart once they fall below #10. For non top 10 hits, they are removed after 20 weeks if they have lost spins in two consecutive weeks. All recurrents are removed in the Sunday afternoon update. Purges A song is purged if it has been on the chart for less than 20 weeks and falls below 40 without a bullet. Like recurrency, songs are purged in order to make room for new songs below them. A song will not be purged if it still has its bullet, even if it was inside the Top 40 for the published chart in Week 1 and fell out of the Top 40 in week 2, because it still has potential to rise on the chart. If a song peaks below number 40, it will not be purged even with the loss of its bullet. Audience Impression Audience Impression measures the estimated number of people that the song has reached. The AI number we receive from All-Access is measured in millions and like the other data on the chart, covers a weeklong period. So if a song has an AI of 21.59 on a given day means that approximately 21,590,000 people heard the song over the span of the past seven days. Different stations obviously have different AI’s, with larger markets having more listeners than smaller markets. In addition to this, the AI a song gains from each spin depends not only on the station but the time of day. AI does not contribute to the rankings on the Mediabase charts, which are determined by spins, but is important for sales and also contributes to the radio portion of the formula that determines the Billboard Hot 100. Rolling Chart vs. Published Chart The Rolling Chart is the daily chart where we get our daily updates. The Published Chart is the Sunday afternoon chart. This is where the official peaks come from and thus what radio stations look at when considering chart position for adds. Syndicated Spins A syndicated spins is a spin from a program that is played on a significant number of monitored stations. (i.e. Open House Party) Formats Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR) is the same as Top 40 or Pop. It's the format with the biggest audience and is also the fastest moving format (as far as we're concerned, at least). Plays a variety of songs that are straight up pop, more rhythmic leaning stuff, so country influenced pop, etc., depending on the station. Targets audience is preteen-twenties, or there about. Hot Adult Contemporary (HAC) is a smaller format than CHR, but still has decent AI numbers and can impact sales, so it's still important. The audience for HAC is older than the audience for Pop (although I'm 21 and generally prefer HAC, so there you go), plays a lot of the same type of music as Pop without the most rhythmic stuff (generally there is little to no rap to be found on HAC) and is more likely to play ballads or what would be classified as "light" rock than CHR. It's also a slower moving format than CHR, and anything that goes to the top 5 on CHR is all but guaranteed Top 5 on HAC unless it's straight up rap. There's a LOT of crossover between these charts. As a point of reference, WWFM went to #12 on CHR and #2 on HAC (where it stayed for a long while) and IIHY went to #16 on Pop and #15 (I think) on HAC. BTIKM went to #50 on CHR and #17 on HAC. There's also Adult Contemporary (AC), which moves as slow as molasses and plays a mix of classic rock/light rock/HAC type stuff (WWFM did well there, IIHY didn't do a whole lot, probably because it was too fast for the format), and generally what does well on HAC eventually does pretty well on AC as well, but the degree varies on the songs. Some More FAQs!
What do the numbers in a daily update mean? The daily update on HAC for BTIKM on February 25 was: 31 29 ADAM LAMBERT Better Than I Know Myself 589 514 75 2.428 +41 spins +38 bullet +.115 AI Here's what the numbers in the top line mean: 31=Last week's position 29=Current position 589=Current spin count (for last seven days) 514=Last week's spin count 75=Bullet (Change in spins) 2.428=AI in millions So then what do the numbers with the +'s mean, you ask? The +41 spins means that the songs was played 41 times more in the previous day (in this case, Friday 2/24) than on the day that was dropped from the spin count (in this case, Friday 2/17). This is how I think of it: The formula for Friday 2/24's spin count would be: Friday 2/17 + Saturday 2/18 + Sunday 2/19 + Monday 2/20 + Tuesday 2/21 + Wednesday 2/22 + Thursday 2/23, i.e. the seven days previous to the day of the chart. Saturday 2/25's formula would then drop Friday 2/17 and add Friday 2/24 while keeping all of the spins from the days in between, so the change in spins is really just the difference between the number of spins on the two Fridays. The +38 means the increase in the bullet, i.e. the difference in the amount of spins gained this week as compared to last. In this case, the spincrease reported on Saturday 2/25 was +41, while the spincrease on the previous Saturday was +3, hence the +38 bullet. A good way to think about change in bullet is as momentum. If the bullet is increasing, that means the song is gaining spins faster than it was the previous week. If the bullet is decreasing, it doesn't necessarily mean a song is losing spins (although it could be), it might just have slowed down a little bit. The explanation for the change in AI is basically equivalent to the one for change in spins, so I'm not going to elaborate unless someone specifically requests it. It's totally variable and up to the record company. If it's going to iTunes on Tuesday, radio will definitely have it by then, but RCA will set the impact dates accordingly. I'm guessing we may see a HAC impact date either next week (4/16) or the week after (4/23) and a CHR date a week after whichever of those they choose for HAC. They'll presumably be moving fast to push this song with the album dropping soon.
