Jordin Sparks Talks Whitney Houston and "Sparkle"
Today on the red carpet of ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood luncheon, Jordin Sparks opened up about her Sparkle co-star, the late Whitney Houston.

"I got the amazing honor to stand face-to-face with her," said Sparks dressed in a shimmery black number. "I have amazing memories that I get to cherish. I didn't know her very long. It was two months. It was 12-hours a day for two months. You get really close when you're in that kind of setting. She was so motherly and so kind and hilarious. She was so funny. She would bust out with stories and jokes."

From there Sparks went on to talk about her day-to-day action with Houston. "Everyday when she came in she was so happy and so joyous to be there. She would walk in and say 'How are my babies today? My babies good? God is good!' Every morning she came in like that."

Sparks is set to honor Houston at today's luncheon with a special song tribute.

Sparkle is slated to hit theaters on August 17.

Jordin Sparks On Whitney Houston: ‘She Was An Incredible Woman’

Jordin Sparks paid tribute to her “Sparkle” co-star, the late Whitney Houston, at the 5th Annual ESSENCE Black Women In Hollywood Luncheon on Thursday, and she told Access Hollywood she had a few nerves before her performance.

“I don’t know how I’m gonna do in there. We’ll see,” Jordin told Access Hollywood on the red carpet before the event. “We’ll see what happens. If I choke up…

“I’ll get it together,” she continued. “Have to try and keep it in.”

Jordin’s “Sparkle” performance at the ESSENCE event was a long time in the works, but following Whitney’s death earlier this month, it turned into a tribute for the late superstar.

“I was already going to do it and sing a song from the movie and everything like that and then all recent events happened, and now I’m going to be singing a song that she actually sang, but is also in the movie, from the original, it’s called ‘Look Into Your Heart,’” Jordin explained to Access. “She was a part of the Curtis Mayfield tribute album. She actually sang [an] amazing version, so I’m going to do my own little version too.”

Looking back on her time with Whitney, Jordin admitted to being a little emotional as Thursday rolled around.

“It definitely makes me very emotional,” she told Access. “I looked up to her and I sang her songs and then all of a sudden I was in a movie with her and I got to see her face-to-face, and she was so kind and she was so sweet.

“She was an incredible woman and I was very, very blessed to get to know her for the short time that I did, but she was incredible,” Jordin added.

And the former “American Idol” winner is hoping to keep Whitney’s memory alive with the release later this year of “Sparkle.”

“It gives me a lot of excitement to be able to put this movie out because it was her baby, and she was so, so into it and so happy to be doing it,” Jordin told Access. “I’m excited that I get to be a part of it.”

“Sparkle” will hit theaters on August 17, 2012.

Jordin Sparks Pays Tribute to Her Idol Whitney Houston

The moment she was told her idol Whitney Houston had died, Jordin Sparks broke down, locked herself in her hotel room and "cried non-stop," a source tells PEOPLE.

But the American Idol winner, 22, kept her tears to a minimum on Thursday afternoon while paying tribute to the late singer at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Speaking briefly about shooting the upcoming film Sparkle with Houston, Sparks grinned and told the room, which was packed with Oscar contenders and others who included Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone, Paula Patton, Pam Grier and Kerry Washington: "The first day she got [to the set] she's scolding me, and I'm thinking this is the best day ever. She went from being this unreachable supernova pop star to my costar, friend and someone who was like a mentor to me. It was a gift and an honor to play opposite Whitney Houston in the film."

Besides her brief speech, Sparks also performed "Look into Your Heart," a song from Sparkle.

"When you see Sparkle, you will be so happy to see the joy that is on her face," Sparks said about Houston. "Everyday started with Whitney saying, 'How are my babies doing? Are you guys good? God is good.' It translates on the screen."
