Early ratings are indicating that The Big Bang Theory and Idol are at an exact tie in the demo rating right now, and it's possible TBBT could come out ahead of Idol in the final numbers:

It has EVERYTHING to do with the fact that there is an oversaturation of singing competitions, no new buzz(no new judges, etc), and the fact that it's an aging show. People are just burn out and I have heard of a lot of people who aren't tuning in until Hollywood or the live shows.And season 10 did revitalize the brand. Scotty was the first platinum album contestant since Cook, ratings were up from season 9, 7 have been signed to a record label, and tour sales recovered after the season 9 slump. --------------------

How do you think the ratings will do Sunday?
1/22 Last year NFL championships got 55 million viewers-and that was earlier in the day! And just last week, The Simpsons got a 236% increase following the game. So, what do you think the ratings for idol will look like on Sunday? In cautiously optimistic! --------------------

Hmm, good question, if they air after the nfl games they will be ok, but to compete with "super bowl", i would fire who ever is in charge of the schedule

Idol gets right after NFC championship. Voice gets it's 1st premiere episode after the Superbowl. The Superbowl is on NBC so is The Voice, so obviously, that's that. Idol is on FOX just like NFC championship, so gain, that's that. I say if there isn't too much post game talking and a good Idol intro, we can expect half of the NFLaudience to tune in for that 1hr if there is more than 10minutes of post game talking then I don't expect much more than 20mil, if that. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the ship is sinking. Idol (and reality television in general) is a relatively cheap genre to produce, and even when this show ages to the point that it's no longer routinely the highest rated show of the week every week, it'll probably still have several more years left in it. The ratings it pulled this week are pretty decent by the standard of mortal shows, and in comparison, Survivor, which pulls in a tiny fraction of the viewership it had at its height, was recently renewed for a 25th and 26th season.
Frankly, I'm more concerned about the quality of the show deteriorating over time, but the first two audition episodes of this season seemed promising, and hopefully the flagging ratings will encourage them to broaden their contestant pools beyond the prescribed "safe" genres of country, rock, and soul. And hopefully they WON'T encourage them to fill the audition episodes with 3 times as many joke contestants who aren't very funny. --------------------

While this may be the lowest premiere, it's not the lowest the show has seen. I think Season 9 saw ratings drop down to like 16 million in the middle of the finals.
