They're both country singers, both teenagers and both adept at playing bashful and green. But the two top stars from this year's "American Idol" couldn't be further apart in their essential characters.

Scotty McCreery has the smaller voice, and the greater distance between his look and sound. At 17, he appears more like 12, yet he sings in a baritone as manly as stars like Toby Keith and Trace Adkins. That disparity on TV often made him seem as awkward as a kid dressed up in his father's clothes.

Lauren Alaina has a showier voice and despite her seeming innocence she can simulate something more knowing when the song calls for it. On "Idol," that combination made her the more appealing and mature contestant.

Not that "America" agreed. Scotty creamed her - at least on screen. Now comes a rematch at retail: Will it have the same result?

If nothing else, Scotty's debut (out Tuesday) shows improvement. While on TV he succumbed to tics, often mimicking the pausing cadences of Randy Travis, on disk he's more measured and focused. Also, the material takes pains to emphasize his bald experience. In the first single - "I Love You This Big" - he describes romance in language used exclusively by 6-year-olds.

Even by country standards, the rest lunges deep into corn, with every lyric devoted to football, church and the wholly imaginary world of small-town "values." It's a vision of America even Norman Rockwell might find a tad exaggerated. The melodies, as well, could be stronger. Only the opener, "Out of Summertime," begs for repeated listens. But at least the passable rest tailors itself to McCreery's true self.

Lauren sounds as if she could eat that self for breakfest. While he plays retiring mama's boy, her debut (released next week) finds her singing about being a juicy Georgia peach of lust and her hunger to ditch the family to taste the racier world. Even in those songs that make clear her reverence for her parents, and her limits on sex, she exudes an independent spunk.

Unlike her male rival, Lauren's vocals aren't always flattered by the move from soundstage to studio. She can sound shrill and monochromatic in the big notes, like she's pushing too hard for Carrie Underwood territory. Yet, in the more nuanced songs, like "Tupelo," she shows the beauty of her tone.

Tellingly, both singers close their albums with songs about God. At root, they share a conservative core. Since Scotty's album betters his TV work while Lauren's shows some pullback, the margin between them now seems finer. Who will win in this key round? Stay tuned.
