Adam Lambert and his mother Leila Lambert were honored by Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) in Beverly Hills on Sunday night (September 25).
The inverted triangle is a symbol that represents the LGBT community, and was given to Adam because of his “authentic” voice—because he is willing to stand up and be authentic in his voice. The other piece of the logo is the heart, which represents the family supporting LGBT people. This part of the award was presented to Leila for her support of her son.

Both Leila and Adam gave touching acceptance speeches upon receiving their awards. Leila first spoke about her discussion with Adam when he first told her that he was gay. She then shared her experience from her first PFLAG meeting, where she realized that everyone left with a feeling of camaraderie. “I really feel like we are in this together. It takes all of us to do this. We really need to be supportive. We as straight people, we as gay people, we all need to be together on this. It really makes a huge difference.”

Adam was thrilled to be honored alongside his mother and said, “I really came here for my mom. Because she got so excited about PFLAG and told me about the organization and I said that’s great, I’m glad you’re getting involved. She told me about the work that you guys do…It’s really exciting to know that there are people that help support the parents as well, because it is a tough thing.

OMG...i bout fell out with these pics...so beautiful and so lovely that he is with his mom at this event. The video really highlights who he gets his charisma and gift for public speaking from. Leila is an inspiration to us all on how to just be there for our kids no matter what....

........Adam and his mom were presented with crystal awards in the two shapes of the PFLAG logo; Adam was honored with the inverted triangle for his “authentic and strong” voice in the gay community, while his beautiful mother received the heart for her unwavering support of her multi-talented son and the LGBT community.

In their acceptance speeches, both Adam and Leila recounted their “easy” experience with Adam’s coming out, but noted that often times other gay kids and families don’t have it as easy as they did and that’s where an organization like PFLAG really helps.

“I am incredibly honored, I’m incredibly proud. I have an amazing kid,” a doting Leila said of the honor and her Grammy-nominated son during her acceptance speech. Adam was equally as proud of his mom. “It’s really exciting to be here tonight. Thank you guys so much for honoring my mother,” he said.

VIDEO: Adam Lambert and his mom get PFLAG award in LA

LOS ANGELES – Pop star Adam Lambert and his mom, Leila Lambert, were honored Sunday night at the second annual PFLG National LA Event.

The native San Diegans gave warm, funny and touching speeches after receiving the unusually-shaped award. The inverted triangle, a symbol representing the LGBT community, was given to Lambert. The heart, a symbol representing the love of family who supports their LGBT children, was given to Lambert’s mom. When combined, the two pieces create the PFLAG logo.

Lambert praised his mom for being so accepting and supportive of his being gay, adding that he has been out since age 18. He noted that he came from a liberal and progressive family, and that many LGBT children don’t have it so lucky.
