FORMER Australian Idol winner Kate DeAraugo has warned of the pitfalls of sudden fame, revealing she was terrified of life after she became a household name by winning the TV sing-off in 2005.

She also revealed that she put on "an obscene amount of weight" after her career stalled.

Speaking for the first time since she quit her Jenny Craig ambassadorship and withdrew from public life three years ago, the 25-year-old said she struggled with living her life in the spotlight at such a young age, but had now come to terms with it.

"I'm not scared anymore," DeAraugo told The Sunday Telegraph. "I was scared of myself and what people would think and what people would say."

After falling out of the spotlight, DeAraugo, who splits her time between Sydney's inner west and Bendigo, said she put on more than 40kg, but has since shed half of that.


I'm not ashamed to admit I put on an obscene amount of weight," she said. "I was the biggest I've ever been. I've lost about 20 kilos and I've got 20 more to go."

DeAraugo has spent her time out of the spotlight working on new songs and is now in talks with several record labels to release her second solo studio album.

"It's four seasons in one album sort of thing," she said.

I'm glad to see she's finally working on something new. She wasn't my favorite winner and I wanted Emily to win, but I thought it sucked that she only had one solo outing.
