Idol Meter: Eyeing their career prospects

As the Idols prepare to sing Elvis and Coasters songs from the Leiber & Stoller catalog, as filtered through the aesthetics of guest mentor Lady Gaga, it's intriguing to contemplate what sort of careers await them when they return to the real world. It's still doubtful that Haley can succeed, but prospects are promising for the other three:

Country star: Scotty McCreery (67)

It would take a sizable misstep for Scotty to avoid signing with a major Nashville label and becoming Idol's biggest male country star by a wide margin. His TV fame gives him a big head start, but it's his rich voice, disarming personality and remarkable maturity that should make him an enduring star in his chosen field.

Classics Come To American Idol, Online Sportsbooks Predict Results

QUOTE
Being a pop star in this generation requires a wide range of song selection and tonight, our top 4 contestants of season 10 of American Idol will once again, sing from a list of songs that out age them by far. This will not be the first time that the performances have been centered around classic hits, but this time it is more important than before. Making it to the top 10 is one thing, but being a part of the final 4 puts these contestants within arm’s reach of making their dreams come true. The next song could very well make or break a contestant’s future in the music industry. American Idol has been a huge stepping stone for some of the most successful careers in the business today, such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

American Idol is making dreams come true one show at a time. Tonight, contestants will market themselves as the next American Idol and hope to secure their spot in next weeks performances. The closer we get to the season 10 American Idol finale, the more likely we are to see the contestants either step up or be over shadowed by those who do. Being part of the final 4 is just as close as you can make it, without being part of the finals. This week will determine who will battle it out in next weeks performances as they try to earn a spot in the finale. Online sportsbooks have been following this season very closely and have voiced their predictions through American Idol betting odds. They have been wrong more than once, but as it stands odds makers are favoring James Durbin to be the next American Idol.

Tonight the contestants take on some of the most well known classic hits and what they do with them had better be nothing short of perfection. Fan favorite Haley Reinhart will be showcasing her sassy soulful sounds when singing ‘I’m a Woman’ and ‘Spanish Harlem.’ Following his previous performances, James Durbin will once again be showing his softer side when singing hit classics ‘Stand By Me’ and ‘One Bad Stud.” You never know with performers like James, but he may very well rock it out. Country soul singer Scotty McCreery takes on ‘Jailhouse Rock’ and ‘Alligator Wine.’ Lauren Alaina will grace the stages singing classics ‘On Broadway’ and ‘There Goes My Baby.’

It is really any ones crown to wear at this point and tonight’s performances will determine who is one step closer to making their dreams of becoming a pop star a reality.

[bodog125] Odds to Win American Idol Season 10

James Durbin 3/2
Scott McCreery 3/2
Haley Reinhart 7/2
Lauren Alaina 9/2

not sure how accurate this report is. i just can't see scotty singing Alligator Wine. but it is interesting that james and scotty are head to head according to bookies anyway.

American Idol Odds: Betting the Final Four

IPB Image

American Idol down to the final four

American Idol’s panel of judges, as well as the legions of fans voting from home, hold your wagers in their hands. The four finalist perform Wednesday night and then the axe will fall on one pop hopeful Thursday.

Scotty McCreery -110
McCreery’s booming voice is a surprise when starring down his nerdy stature. He’s already grabbed the attention of plenty of country recorded labels and will be cracking the country charts soon – regardless if he wins American Idol or not.

James Durbin +180
Durbin is the male rocker among the finalist and hopes to follow in the footsteps of Idol alum Chris Daughtry and not the long list of winners who have faded into obscurity.

Lauren Alaina +650
It looks like the guys are running a two-horse race for the American Idol crown, but don’t count out the ladies. There is plenty of value in Alaina, who is hoping to parlay her Idol success into a country career a la Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler. Maybe she'll end up dating an NHL player too!

Haley Reinhart +650
Reinhart is the dark horse of the bunch and plenty of critics don’t see a career for her once she gets the boot, well, unless she pulls off the upset and wins. But even her home town is prepping for her return. If anything, Reinhart has the edge over her competitors in the looks department. And in today’s music industry that can go a long way.

"After that battle royale, Scotty McCreery brought everyone together again with Alan Jackson's "Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning." Like Durbin's brown-nosing choice, it was a savvy pick in light of the recent killing of terror master Osama bin Laden and lyrics about the Sept. 11 terror attacks. Strumming an acoustic and accompanied by a lonesome fiddle, McCreery did it again, hitting all the right sweet spots with a sincere, deep-voiced rendition of the ballad about war, love and Jesus."

[4] Scotty McCreery – In light of the killing of Osama Bin Laden, McCreery’s choice for the “Songs That Inspire” was very timely and appropriate. McCreery’s performance of “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning” by Alan Jackson was typical of his usual offerings, but because the lyrics are so poignant and timely, it ended up being one of his best moments on the show.

Unfortunately, his second song, while applauded by the judges and his fans, was not very good. His goofy version of “Youngblood” by The Coasters showed his lighthearted side, and left the judges impressed with his ability to deliver a humorous performance, but if not for the fact that he is one of the favorites, it most likely would have been more heavily critiqued.

Based on his body of work and his performances this week, McCreery should be concerned about being sent packing, but it seems that he is destined to appear in the finale. He is a good performer, but he has yet to deliver a vocal performance that blows you away. To quote Steven Tyler’s lyrics, McCreery’s weekly performances are “the same old story, the same old song and dance,” but it doesn’t seem to matter to the voters or the judges.

WHO GOES HOME?

If it were up to me, this would be the time for Scotty McCreery to leave. He will most likely be a successful country singer, but if people really take the time to evaluate him in this competition, it is painfully obvious that he has yet to blow anyone away with his vocals. In the real world, he may have the most success out of any of the contestants, but that doesn’t mean that he should beat them in a singing competition.

Scotty McCreery’s career will be defined by what he does once American Idol is over. He doesn’t deserve to beat out any of the others purely based on his vocals, but his popularity may push him over the edge.

Hands up who thinks Fox should greenlight a sitcom starring Lady Gaga and Scotty. How hilarious was that. It’s a modern day Odd Couple. Love that Gaga has no filter and was talking dirty and uncensored to him. So much so, he kissed his cross to cleanse his sins away afterward. LOL. I have to admit, I haven’t been the biggest Scotty fan, but he was adorable during his second performance. That said, I’m not sure if it was too comedic and gimmicky for a Top 4 performance. He could probably fart up there and forget all his lyrics and still make the finals. That’s how much of a sure thing Scotty is.

HAHAHA at the idea of a sitcom! grin.gif grin.gif grin.gif

ANOTHER ONE: Did Lady Gaga scare Scotty McCreery?

Just seeing the wide contrast between the colorful, edgy pop star and the clean-cut, all-American country crooner Scotty McCreery was comical. And things got a little spicy when she told Scotty to pretend his microphone was his girlfriend and to do certain things with his tongue.

"You gotta get right in the center of that hot dog," Lady Gaga said, referring to the mic. "That's your girlfriend, and she says to you, 'If you don't stick your tongue down my throat, we're through.'"

Maybe that wasn't the most wholesome advice for a wholesome 17-year-old kid, but it certainly livened up the show.

BTW, I'm 23, and do not understand what Steve Tyler meant when he said, "Dude, you made Gaga's ya-ya go la-la."

'American Idol': Randy tears into Haley, and Rupert Murdoch is there to see it, on the scene of Top 4 performance night

QUOTE

We really are just at a Scotty concert, and they’ve just built a TV show around it At least, that was the feeling inside the Idoldome after Scotty’s performance of Alan Jackson’s “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)” — the audience simply lapped it up, and when Scotty tossed his pick into the audience as he was leaving the stage, several people scrambled (yes, scrambled) to grab it. Like him or not, this kid is a bone fide star.

Then again, he is still just a kid As the package of delicious awkwardness between Lady Gaga and Scotty unfolded on the Thunderscreen, the image split and the Thunderstairs emerged with Scotty sitting on them just as he cracked the joke that his mic had better be good looking if he was going to make out with it. At that very moment, Scotty stood and nervously readjusted his to keep them from riding up. It was unavoidably cute. And Gaga was completely right, by the way, about how Scotty needs to hold his mic; the audio mix on television pushes the vocals so forward, you can usually always hear Scotty sing, but in person, his voice does at times come in and out of the live mix to the point of distraction.

Lady Gaga embarrasses 'American Idol's' Scotty McCreery, has him kissing his cross afterwards

QUOTE
Lady Gaga made quite an impression on the "American Idol" contestants on Wednesday night.

But one in particular, she left kissing the cross around his neck afterwards: Scotty McCreery.

The deep-voiced country singer seemed a little freaked out by Gaga -- and not just because she was dressed like Carol Channing and Cruella De Vil's love child.

Gaga was trying to instruct McCreery on how to properly sing into his microphone because he kept pulling away or singing into it from the side during his practice of Alan Jackson's "Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning."

"You've got to get right in the center of that hotdog," she told a mortified McCreery.

"I don't know where Gaga was going with that," he responded.

But it didn't end there.

"That's your girlfriend," she continued. "And she says to you, 'if you don't stick your tongue down my throat, we're through.' You keep your mouth on that microphone like your life depends on it or that [expletive] is going to leave you. You've got to make love to that microphone."

At the end of the practice session, the conservative McCreery joked, "I just felt like I needed to kiss my cross and say, 'Lord this is not my doing."

'American Idol' Final 4 recap: Lady Gaga inspires Scotty McCreery with spicy words, or did she corrupt him?

IPB Image

Here are the Scotty mentions from the article:

So did the rare sparring between the judges. And so did Steven Tyler, with his creative choice of words. He told Scotty McCreery: "Dude, you made Gaga's ya-ya go la-la." (It was a classic Steven Tyler line. But I kind of felt bad for any parents who might have been put in the uncomfortable spot of having to explain to their kids what the Aerosmith frontman meant by his words…)

SCOTTY McCREERY
• (Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning / Alan Jackson) – As I’ve said in the past, I’m not a big fan of country music. But I am a fan of great heartfelt songs. And this one was great. From a vocal standpoint, this was a flawless performance. And Randy Jackson was right when he told Scotty: I think you set your mark on this stage this season. You’re ready for super stardom, dude, and I hope you make it. Very nice. Did J-Lo like Scotty’s performance? She told him: “I’m in love with you. I can’t help it

• (Young Blood / The Coasters) – Some of Lady Gaga’s irreverence seemed to rub off on Scotty last night as he strutted around the state and turned in a fun, playful performance – a little goofy at times, but strong vocally.

IDOL 411: Scotty Hits a High Note With 9/11 Tribute, Lady Gaga Brings a Touch of Evil

IPB Image

Here are the Scotty mentions from the article:

From Scotty McCreery's meaningful 9/11 tribute to Lady Gaga inspiring the contestants to be "evil" to the brawl between Haley Reinhart and Randy Jackson, "American Idol" certainly packed a lot into 90 minutes on Wednesday night.

Let's start with Scotty's pivotal moment when he performed Alan Jackson's "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)." A week and a half after Usama bin Laden's death, the song couldn't have been more perfectly timed, and it may have been one of the shrewdest moves of the season. He not only played to the hearts of the judges and Americans watching at home, but to his core audience of die-hard country music fans as well.

Jennifer Lopez was left in awe of the performance, telling him, "I am just in love with you, I can't help it. I can tell how much you think about it and you know who you are and you know what touches other people. It's the mark of someone who is meant to do this."

Steven Tyler also praised the rendition, calling it "beautiful."

The dramatic moment set the stage for comic relief in round two, when Lady Gaga attempted to talk to Scotty about sex. One thing is now perfectly clear: Lady Gaga and Scotty McCreery just don't mix. Gaga urged Scotty to move closer to the microphone during "Young Blood," explaining, "That's your girlfriend and if you don't stick your tongue down throat she's gonna leave you. Make love to that mic!" With a wink and a nudge, poor Scotty said he felt the need to kiss his cross and apologize to the Lord.

Here's what Allison Iraheta had to say about Scotty's performances last night. happy.gif

Scotty McCreery ("Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)," Alan Jackson): He’s in it to win it, dog. Obviously, the kind of country Scotty does is real country and he’s been doing that from the beginning. I’m sure there are people who would criticize Scotty for being a “one-trick pony,” but he is giving 100% of himself in his performances. He’s unique. You can hear his voice and instantly know it’s him -- I love that. This was a great performance.

Scotty McCreery (“Young Blood,” The Coasters): What Lauren is missing is what Scotty has. He looked like was having so much fun, and he was smart by picking a slow song for his first number and an uptempo number for the second -- it showed how comfortable he was on the big stage. The producers help with direction, but it’s up to the contestants to change it or follow it. I think Scotty is definitely going through -- he’s cute, he can sing, he’s never been in the bottom 3, girls love him -- he’s Scotty the Body.

Aw, how sweet of Allison. SHe's Hispanic too, so maybe she feels a connection with Scotty. Its a shame she hasn't done better, but, she's still young. Lauren could learn confidence and stage presence from this girl.

'American Idol' behind the scenes: 'Idol' coaches talk the Top 4 -- EXCLUSIVE

SCOTTY McCREERY – “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)” (Alan Jackson)
MO: Scotty wanted to do that song weeks before [during the Top 7 songs from the 21st century week], and the publishers had not cleared it. I think that they called up again to say, “You know, Scotty wants to do this.” The music publishers get to know the contestants and they become fans. He just loves that song. I think he did [have a second choice], but I don’t remember what it was. When we were in the studio on Friday, working with Rodney [Jerkins], he and I were in the booth trying to figure out some stuff. That whole idea of him changing the melody on the second chorus, those all came from him. He really was so proud of himself for coming up with that.

SCOTTY McCREERY – “Young Blood”
MO: I don’t think Leiber & Stoller songs were easy for anybody. Because you either sing an Elvis song, or an obscure one of their [other] songs. Or you sing “On Broadway,” which nobody really wanted. I love their songs, but the contestants, because of their lack of knowledge of them, really struggled on it. It was just us sitting in the room with Scotty playing through a bunch of songs. When he heard the recording where the guy goes [getting progressively deeper] “Looka there, looka there, looka there” — just from those few spoken lines, he was like, “Oh yeah this is the one for me.” He did want to maybe do an Elvis song, but he had just come off of doing an Elvis song. That’s enough.

American Idol” is coming closer to the finish line and this is the moment –- as the judges continue to remind the contestants –- that matters the most, and when you truly compete.

Jennifer Lopez for the last few weeks has offered a piece of advice that can be taken a few different ways: It's not just about hitting those big-money notes, it's about selecting songs that people at home can really connect with (i.e. hits).

Taking this approach is the textbook way of earning votes, unless you're James Durbin.

Wednesday was another double theme night (songs that inspire you, and selections from the Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller songbook). When it came to selecting an inspirational song, no one seemed to understand Lopez’s advice better than young Scotty McCreery.

McCreery, perched with his guitar, took on Alan Jackson’s “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning).”

“Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke,” he sang. “Risin' against that blue sky / Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor / Or did you just sit down and cry?”

Jackson’s 9/11 tribute, at the 2001 CMA awards in November, was a huge hit for the singer. The song sat at the top of the Billboard country charts and reached Top 40 on the pop charts. He also won the Academy of Country Music and CMA trophies for song of the year and single of the year and landed his first Grammy for best country song -- he lost song of the year to Norah Jones.

The teenager, who would have been eight years old at the time of the attack, couldn’t have picked a better time to sing the song.

American patriotism is at a high after last week’s killing of Osama bin Laden at a compound inside Pakistan, which ended a decade-long manhunt. President Barack Obama's approval rating is at its highest point in two years after the triumph -- 60%, according to an Associated Press poll.

As news stations are still covering the terrorist leader's take down, the moments from that day are fresh in the minds of most Americans –- especially as the 10 year anniversary looms. The judges praised McCreery’s performance and song selection with a standing ovation.
