Waiting for my list to be ready, hereby another apetizer...

Melissa NKonda

Show: Nouvelle Star
Season: 7
Place: 9

Offical site: http://www.melissankonda.com/

I must confess, the only thing I remembered about Melissa was the delicate remark André Manoukian made about her pants... ("You're walking around in your w.... leopard pants...")
She did not give up after her elimination and maybe her time has come. She took part in another casting (not on TV this time but on Facebook...): "I want to sign with AZ" (one of Universal branch) and... she won. Her single "Nouveaux horizons" will be released in February and her album in April. She got Amy Winehouse's drummer, VV Brown, Red One & French rapper Soprano to work on her songs... Not too bad for a start right... I'll check the album when he'll be out!

Yeah I just heard her single for the first time today too! I think she sounds really good and am excited to hear the album. That being said, I thought she was terrible (like truly terrible) on NS.

I stopped following NS after season four. Why was she truly terriable? Lots of bum notes?

She just came off as really young and immature in the way she performed and acted. (like the second half of this:)

I really liked her audition for the AZ Contest that SlenderFrame mentioned though - she just seemed way more poised and cool. Hope she does well with her album!!

Drum roll, it's time to launch that damned list after all (if I keep waiting it will never start). So, 34 different artists if I counted right, from 4 different shows (Nouvelle Star, Star Academy & Popstars) will appear in this 65 albums list. You bet there are gonna be various styles in there. Hope you enjoy it, even if you don't like all of it. I actually don't like all of it myself, that's how some people end up at the bottom of the list, and that is...

65 . Miss Dominique "Une femme battante"

IPB Image

Release date: 2006
Show: Nouvelle Star (season 4)

Favourite track: Mac Arthur Park
Least favourite: Well, I am not specifically found of the album to be honest.

Miss Dominique was Christophe Willem runner up on NS season 4. She got a deal with Sony BMG and her album got good critics support. She even won a "Victoire de La Musique" in 2007 (that would be the French equivalent of the Grammies) for Revelation of the year public choice. The album is certified Gold for selling 130.000 copies.

Most of the tracks are covers, in French and English. My problem with Miss Dominique is that if I reckon she is powerfull and that her gospel background is evident, she never sounds "real" to me. "Les Moulins de Mon coeur" for exemple, lack of real emotion. I'm not touched either by her rendition of "Calling You". And when she sings stuff like "Ain't no mountain high enough" or "It's a man's world", it sounds over the top to me...

The original songs are for most of them written or co-written by Miss Do (like "Doudou"). It's not worse than many French songs you might hear, but once again I have that feeling it all lacks of real emotions and feelings...

To sum it up: She got the powerhouse but does she have the soul to go with it? Doubful.

Thats interesting because the reason I like Miss Dominique is I feel like you can feel her emotions when she sings. Although I will agree there are a couple of songs that are over top on the album yes.gif

That's the interest of making lists. We are all different and all have different taste. original.gif I never felt the emotions she displayed were real. fear.gif Amel Bent any time...

64. Sofiane - "Comme Je Suis"

IPB Image

Show: Star Academy 4
Release date: 2007

Favourite track: L'envie d'y croire
Least favourite track: None that I really hate, several ones I find boring on the long run.

Sofiane reached Top 6 (on 16) and was selected on the StarAc Tour on season 4 of the show. At the time I considered him as very lucky as several more interesting contestants were eliminated before he was, and the production actually used him twice to get rid of contestants they wanted out. On that show, 3 contestants are nominated to exclusion, one is saved by public vote, the second by the other contestants. By nominating a popular contestant, who had chances to get the public vote, and Sofiane, who had lots of friends among the other contestants and would be saved by his mates, the production was sure to see the 3d one eliminated... That kind of manipulation is one of the reason why the show lost its audience with time.

Sofiane's nominations were justified. He had a nice r'n'b voice but he went to pieces everytime he had to sing live on the show. I clearly remember his duets with diva Julie Zenatti, a tiny little woman with a lot of temper, who was close to kick him to wake him up, or with Elodie Frégé, who spent the entire song trying gently to push and pull him through as he kept forgetting his lines.

A couple of years after the show he was offered a contract with Sony BMG and released the french version of... High School Musical soundtrack ("Briser mes chaines") . The following singles ("Dis-lui", covering Mike Brant and "Rever" thats sounds a bit like "Briser mes chaines") did not do as well and the album is probably considered as a commercial failure. Sofiane is unsigned for now according to his MySpace.

Sofiane probably sees himself as a soul singer, but just looking the album cover will indicate who his real rolemodels are: Usher, Neyo, R Kelly...

The songs are mainly mid-tempos or ballads, with few slighly upbeat tracks. Unfortunatelly Sofiane has the same defect as many French r'n'b singers: too many vibes kill the vibe. "Je vous dis" for example, tires me up on the long run because of all those never ending vibes at the end of each sentence...

The lyrics are also rather usual for a French r'n'b' album. Born from a French mother and an Algerian Father who abandonned him, Sofiane sings how much he loves mummy (and all mummies) and about having 2 cultures. He sings peace ("I tell you shalom, I tell you Salam, language does not matter if it comes from the heart"). The rest is dedicated to ladies because he is a lover (you already got it from the cover didn't you?).

I would not say the album is bad, maybe Sofiane still has to mature (and stop being mama's boy?). On the long run it just sounds a little bit... bland.

63 . Chimène Badi - "Dis-moi que tu m'aimes"

IPB Image

Show: Popstars 3 "Le duel"
Release date: 2004

Fav track: "Dis-moi que tu m'aimes" & "On a les amours qu'on mérite"
Least fave track: None that I really hate, sometimes she just sound a little bit "outdated".

Chimène got known through "Popstars" 3d season (the "Girlband vs Boyband" season). If her voice clearly charmed the jury from day 1, it was evident she would not fit in a "Popstars" type of band. When she was rejected and left the bootcamp, Valéry Zeitoun signed her as a solo artist on AZ.

As it often happens, the winning band disbanded after one album. Chimène became a household name in French pop music.

This one is her second album. It is a typical French Diva album. Chimène can be compared to Celine Dion or Lara Fabian. I sometimes find her style a little outdated but I must say she has an impressive voice. I love her best when she uses her power with subtility - sad she sometimes belts out putting power over emotions, because she does have sensibility. As time goes by it seems she started to share my thoughts, as we might see... higher on this list.

62. Miss Dominique - "Si je n'étais pas moi"

IPB Image

Show: Nouvelles Star 4
Release date 2009

Fave track: "C'est trop" & "Comprendre les hommes"
Least Fave track: None, it's just her nasal voice that ticks me off often.

I prefer Miss Dominique'second album to her first for several reasons.

First of all, it's made of original songs (there is only one cover, "Vivre La vie" and it's less pretentious than those on her 1st opus). Then I like this Motown soul style better than the pretentious jazzy style she adopted on "Une femme battante". I also prefer her voice on upbeat songs than on ballads, her nasal tone and kind of weird accent annoy me less.

She still did not win my heart but I grant her she progressed from her 1st album.

61. Chimène Badi - "Entre Nous"

IPB Image

Show: Popstars 3 "Le duel"
Release date: 2003

Favourite tracks: "Ente nous", "Si j'avais su t'aimer", "Répondez-moi", "Un père".
Least avourite tracks: None, I just sometimes find her a little bit outdated.

Chimène was rejected from the bootcamp on Popstars season 3, but she entered the recording studios almost at the same time than the winning Boyband LinkUp and their reunner-up Diadems.

Her 1st album outsold the bands ones without problem. France had found a new diva, who got to sing with legend Johnny Hallyday on his tour in 2004. She was nominated as Revelation of the Year on Victoires de La Musique. Her detractors say she sings like in the 50's, her fans consider her as a new Piaf.

She does sound "old" sometimes, but I like her voice especially when she keeps it soft and she is a down-to-earth and endearing person. This album sounds clumsy sometimes, it's been recorded in a few weeks in Quebec and Chimène was very young. But it works out. I hesitated in exchanging her sophomore album with this one on the list, but I found she did not force her voice as much here than on the 2d album, so it ranks higher in the end...

Don't be too late...

Two you already know next...

60. Jonatan Cerrada - "Siempre 23"

IPB Image

Show: Nouvelle Star 1
Release date: 2003/re-released 2004

Fave track: "Je voulais te dire que je t'attends", 'Siempre mañana", "Rien ni personne"
Least fave track: The album sounds a little cheap.

I am always a little disgusted to see M6 completelly disregarded Jonatan after his victory. In France the medias clearly prefered runner up Thierry Amiel. This album has been certified Gold, but Thierry outsold his winner in France (in Belgium the country child did better).

I reckon the album is not brilliant. But Jonatan was only 18. His main defect here is to let his energy control his singing and to lack of nuances. You can tell when listening to some ballads that nuances will come with maturity, but then he was just an energetic little man who probably still mixed up passion with power. That energy was after all what most people enjoyed on the show.

The over problem is that the production sounds cheap. It was not a bad idea to add some latin flavours to Jonatan's French pop (some songs remind me of Marc Anthony or Chayanne...) but I can't help thinking they did not spend the money here.

The re-release of the album included "A chaque pas", Eurovision entry for France in 2004. A song Jonatan co-wrote and that left most people wondering WTF, thanks to choreographer Kamel Ouali who sent Jona on stage with a dancer on stilts and a globe... Go figure. Jona ended at n° 8 if my memory is good, not too bad looking at the results France would get after him.

I honestly think Jonatan deserved better signatures and a better production.

Je voulais te dire que je t'attends:

Rien ne me changera:

59. Thierry Amiel - "Paradoxes"

IPB Image

Show Nouvelle Star 1
Release date: 2003

Fave track: None
Least fave track: Brel and Barbara covers.

If Jonatan Cerrada did not get the money he deserved spent on his 1st album, probably it was spent on his runner-up... Thieery Amiel 1st album looks and sounds better. With signature of Calogero (pop-rock singer songwriter), Lionel Florence (who was writing for all the big names in French Pop), Olivier Shoulteis & Jean-Pierre pilot (both regular collaborators of popstar Zazie), he got a much more searched after team than his winner. The covers he picked were also classy: Brel, Barbara, Ferré (as "bonus tracks, the songs are recorded live with just a piano) but also Christophe ("Les Mots Bleus"). Everything seemed to have been done to profile Thierry as a classy new Pop singer, while Jonatan was keeping a more popular profile.

The result is a better album, no surprise. Thierry is a great vocalist, more subtle in his interpretations than Jonatan at that time. He also has a wider range. My only problem with Thierry is that he sounds a little precious. That's in the way he pronounces some words. Sometimes that "posh accent" ticks me off.

I'm not fond of his Brel covers: he was too young to pull out "Quand on a que l'amour" and too innocent to sing "Amsterdam". He completely fails in Barbara's "L'aigle noir" (that one is tricky). I like better "Avec le temps", a very heavy song by Ferré that suits his voice - not the best rendition of it, but at that age he does right with it. The original songs are not bad, some are heading towards pop-rock, others towards traditionnal French chanson. Not an album I would call memorable but easy to the ear.

I'm loving reading your list! It's making me very nostalgic for 2006 (ish) when I dove head-first into French pop culture. For instance, I never saw Jonatan's Eurovision performance but I can imagine Kamel Ouali+stilts and am currently laughing about it. original.gif And then your post about Thierry Amiel made me think back to his audition where Dove Attia started to openly cry, and that made me all teary, lol.

I agree with pretty much everything you said about Miss Dominique. Didn't realize "Vivre La Vie" was a cover - that was actually my favourite song from her second album. I quite liked Doudou from the first album, because it was a little less over-the-top than the rest....

Also, I didn't realize that Chimene Badi came from Popstars! Keep it up - I'll try to have a listen to the ones I don't know, and then comment on them too.

Most people forgot she was there because she did not make the Girlband... I even read she actually auditioned for Star Academy and "Graine de Stars" too - don't know if that's true!

And the original for Vivre la Vie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1y-KpzfqkQ

I'll give some time to Stormiya before going on. wink.gif Thanks for reading and commenting!!! original.gif

Sofiane - I wasn't really feeling him. Lol at "maybe Sofiane still has to mature (and stop being mama's boy?)" haha.gif
Chimiene - Interesting fact did you know that Idol Contestants Kelly Clarkson, Nikki McKibbin and Kimberly Cadlwell all were on PopStar's and rejected at some point? I think both Kelly and Kimberly got eliminated in the top 50 and Nikki was in the top 26 haha.gif Anyways I kind of liked her. I may have to look into her more! yes.gif
Miss Dominique - I think her second album was a pretty big improvement form her first. I love the old style motown soul sound as well. Pity it Flopped sad.gif
Chimiene - Ditto on the first review. I am liking her.
Jonatan Cerrada - I like Jonatan. He has never made me love him but I thought he was decent....I like that he would sometimes have a Spanish flare...but isn't that where he was born? I felt he got gyped out of a World Idol apperance. Do you know what happened there? It would've been great exposure for him.
Thierry- I've actually never listened to his album...from what I remember of his idol apperance I thought he was kind of eh. lol From these clips...I think that opinion has stayed the same wink.gif

Great list so far! so much fun!

Did not know about Kelly, she would not have fit in a pop band anyway... Don't know other contestants. I actually don't know Popstars US, I just heard Nicole from PussyCat Dolls was part of a Popstars band (Eden's Crush or something?) but I never listened to the band in question... Glad you like Chimène. I had a feeling you would. original.gif

Jonatan is born in Liège, Belgium, but he is from spanish origin. I don't know why he did not take part in World Idol, but that show did not air in France anyway... It was the beginning of NS and I think the TV Channel was not interested in the international show...
I have to check but maybe they did not want to give the impression to copy Star Academy, I have to check when TF1 organised its "Eurobest" competition... Don't remember if it was before or after World Idol.
Anyway, going to Eurovision Song Contest did not really helped his career so I doubt World Idol would have...

58. Sheryfa Luna - "Sheryfa Luna"
IPB Image

Show: Popstars 4
Release date: 2008/ re-released 2009

Fave track: "Je ne cèderai pas", "Il avait les mots", "Des choses qui ne se disent pas"
Least fave track: none

When Popstars 4th season started the producers did not know if they would sign a band or a solo artist. They just knew it would be r'n'b. In the end it was a solo artist, Sheryfa. The show made poor ratings, so it could be curious to see how successful the album was.

Actually there are some good reasons why Sheryfa successfully jumped from TV character to recording artist. The music first: you hear a single twice, you got the chorus stuck in your head. Very efficient. Then, all publicity is good publicity... Sheryfa was pregnant during the show recording but had no idea she was - her pregnancy denial made headlines in tabloids. You can see the silhouette change between her 1st video and the 2d... Don't worry, Sheryfa has perfectly accepted her babyboy after her pregnancy was "diagnosed" and she is a very loving mother.

Sheryfa's voice is not one of a kind but sweet. She might remind you of the likes of Ashanti and Ciarra. The album is upbeat and flows nicelly. It's a typical r'n'b production. There are love songs, songs about her Popstars experience and others about her algerian background.
The re-release in 2009 included a duet with Star Academy 8 runner-up Mathieu Edwards: Sheryfa had already turned into a star that could help out a beginner.

Sofiane...I listened to him. I just didn't care for him yes.gif

I actually didn't follow Popstars but I found out about their apperances on it after the fact. I've never seen a clip of Kelly or Kimberly on it...but there use to be a clip of Nikki McKibbin floating around. I haven't seen it for a few years. [And on that note Nikki was ranked 3rd on my album countdown. She also came 3rd on Kelly's season of Idol]
Eden's Crush only ever had one hit and it was :

I use to love that song when it came out. haha.gif

I liked Sheryfa Luna. French is very suitable for R&B because it flows with the music SO well!

I don't remember Nikki, I guess she did not impress me on your list. I'll check her again...

Two more, one you know, the other you don't.

57. Jérémy Chatelain - "1er album"

IPB Image

Show: Star Academy 2
Release date: 2003

Fave track: "Je m'envole", "Amour.com", "Porte dauphine"...
Least fave track: "Parce que vous le faites" & "Harold & Maud"

Star Academy 2 was a very successfull season. The producers had found balance between the talents needed for the Saturday live show and the "characters" needed for the daily real TV sitcom.
Jérémy was the youngest of his group (he even lied during the casting, declaring to be one year older to be admitted) and the "creative" character of the season: he had a little home studio in his basement, he was creating his own look. Curiously, he had the most mature attitude towards the experience, being a good buddy to others, a funny and witty person and often a pacifying element between the very strong personnalities (with a lot of ambitions) that were competing that year. He made the Top 6 and was selected for the StarAc Tour. He left the show on a gracious gesture: nominated with Aurélie Konaté, he surprised her by modifiying slightly the lyrics of their duet ( Bruel "J'te le dis quand même") to tell her goodbye (he felt rightly she would be the viewers choice and he would be eliminated that night), bringing tears to her eyes. The song has been used several times on Star Academy, this version is not the best one from a technical point of view, but it remains IMO the most touching, because you could feel the emotions were true.

He wrote or co-wrote all of the songs of his album. The cover artwork is supposed to be "punk", to be honest some tracks have heavy guitars but this is mostly pop-rock. Lyrics are true to Jérémy's personnality, generous but a little bit naive (after all, he was only 18...).You feel that he wanted to write about meaningfull things - society ("Parce que vous le faites", "Porte Dauphine", Je m'envole"...), relationship between a young man and an older woman ("Harold & Maud") - but it is still a 18 years old boy way of seing and expressing things.
He was not the best vocalist of that season but the style he choosed suits his energy and range. I like him for his sense of humor and distance ("Je m'en fous" about media exposure ), his generosity and also for the tenderness he can naturally show ("Georgy" is dedicated to one of the contestants, the "rebel" character of that season, who became a good friend). I had not listened to the album in a while (let's be honest, in years) when I took it back from the shelve to make the list, and I was surprised to enjoy listening to it that much.

In 2003 Jérémy met pretty pop singer Alizée (Mylène Framer's protégée back then). They married in November and had a baby girl in 2005. In the meantime, Jérémy had launched a clothing line (Sir Sid) and played in TV serie "Commissaire Valence". He would also write for the 2d album of someone you already heard of, a certain Jonatan Cerrada...

56. Steeve Estatof - "A l'envers"

IPB Image

Show: Nouvelle Star 2
Release date: 2004

Fave track: "Le succès rend con", "Je n'entends rien", "Stella", the singles.
Least fave track: "1977"

Season 1 of NS had been pop oriented. With 2 new jury members, the show gained a completelly different tone on season 2 - a rockier one. Contestants were older, more experienced, and some were even... original.

Steeve passed the audition with his own French adaptation of Nirvana's "Lithium". Dove Attia's face while listening to Steeve's grunge roars is priceless. He was the only one to say no - later on the show he would apologies to Steeve: "I did not get you back then, I reckon, and I'm gratefull my mates insisted to keep you in". Because the grunge rocker was the party maker of the season, giving it all in each performance as if he was in concert. The other contestants were galvanized - or maybe just forced to follow his pace. Philippe Manoeuvre, would would later become a judge, looked at the show the the 1st time when one of his journalist told him "someone" was singing AC/DC and Nirvana on M6 and at 8pm, not in the middle of the night. The musical director of the show became more adventurous in his song choices. Steeve opened the door to all the singers who thought that you had no chance on a TV talent show if Lara Fabian and Johnny Halliday were not your cup of tea. I liked him for his capacity to pull out either real rock numbers ("Highway to hell", "Smells like teen spirits") and ballads ("Angie") as well as giving a sarcastic and irresistible version of 60's pop classics ("L'amour c'est comme une cigarette").

No surprise in those conditions he eventually won. Even if Dove told later he knew Amel Bent (eliminated in 3d place) would sell more. The reasons why Steeve commercial failure was predictable are quite simple. On one side, his compositions sounds too punk and grunge for general public ear and therefore to get radio airplay ("1977" was suposed to be his 2d single but as he says b**** several times in the song it was refused by the radios and the original video censored. Actually he is not insulting a woman in the song, but... death. You're punk or you're not, right?) . On the other, the singles are too pop-rock to be credible to real rock fans ("Ma vie devant toi" signed David Halliday, "Un peu de nous 2" signed Axel Bauer). Steeve ends up sitting between 2 chairs. I don't mind because I listen to so many different artists I can appreciate both sides, but for most people it does not work.

You just have to look at the album cover to realize Steeve listened to Kurt Cobain until his ears turned red, and he sounds a lot like "Nirvana in French". If your ears start bleeding when you listen to Soundgarden, Nirvana or Pearl Jam, you won't like it. Still, as many rockers, Steeve might be very tender when he shows his soft side. In his version of Nino Ferrer's "Le sud" for exemple, that was supposed to be his 1st post-idol single but ended up as the B-side of "Gardes-moi" (and did not make the album). I know many people do not like him and his style, I just do.
