Astana: Cycling Domination of France for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
If Team Astana's progress through the 2009 Tour de France were a movie, that would be the title... EDIT: Apparently, I'm not the only one who tried to use Astana's Kazakhstan roots to play off of the full title to Borat... CNBC.com - Amazing Cycling in France For Make Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan Los Angeles Times - Lance Armstrong teams with Kazakhstan for glorious cycling QUOTE His decision to ride for the Astana team, confirmed by several sources today, can be subtitled, "Bicycle Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan." Stage 16: Mikel Astarloza wins; Franco Pellizotti climbs into the Polka-Dot Jersey; Andy Schlek, the Luxembourger from Saxo Bank, takes over the White Jersey, no major changes in the GC...

Frank Schlek wins Stage 17, crossing the line with brother/teammate Andy and with Alberto Contador.
One thing is certain: The time gap beween A. Schleck and Contador will remain the same. Lance Armstrong just crossed the line in fifth, with Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas/Italy)... Looks like Lance ran out of gas there at the end. I (along with the Versus announcers) thought he would make an attack there at the end. Schlek brothers! I wish my sister rode...we could be like the Schlek sisters, ha. My brother rides but that wouldn't work so well. He's a great descender whereas I'm a better climber.

Alberto Contador wins the Stage 18 Time Trial, beating Fabian Cancellara by a 2.5 seconds; Lance rides himself into Third Place...

Alessandro Ballan attacked and was leading the stage toward the end, before getting caught... I haven't seen a World Champion do anything in the Tour since Tom Boonen in 2006... Then again, Ballan is not having a good year - it's the Curse of the Rainbow Jersey... Going off on a tangent: Has anoybody noticed the Rainbow Piping on the sleeve and collar of Lance Armstrong's jersey during the regular races? Apparently, he's gone back to wearing that piping, which was noticeably absent during his days with Discovery and some of the Postal Service years... (For those that don't know, Armstrong was the 1993 World Champion in the Road Race) MOUNT VENTOUX TOMORROW This post has been edited by ShortstopVM: Jul 24th 2009, 10:06 AM -------------------- ![]() (Thanks Allison (aravilui) for the set, and to o0itzAnGiE and to Stacey for the blinkies!) Juan Manuel Garate, the Spaniard from Rabobank, wins the fabled race to Mount Ventoux. The Usual Suspects (Lance, Contador, the Schleck Bros.) finish relatively together, so the Top Three of the General Classification will not change. Alberto Contador is going to win the Tour de France, Lance will finish third and once the race turns to the Champs-Elysses, the spotlight will shift to the sprinters once again...

Mark Cavendish wins Stage 21, to win his sixth stage of this Tour!
Too bad that Thor Hushovd still won the Sprinter's title by ten points... Franco Pellizotti is your King of the Mountains for 2009. How about Astana taking the Team Titles, beating Garmin by over 22 minutes! Congratulations to Lance Armstrong, who finished Third and to Alberto Contador, who wins this year's Tour de France! -------------------- ![]() (Thanks Allison (aravilui) for the set, and to o0itzAnGiE and to Stacey for the blinkies!) While George Hincapie may not be a GC contender, the cobbles could favor him (along with Fabian Cancellara) on Stage 3... Yeah I mean it'll favor anyone who is Dutch or used to riding the cobbles, specifically in Holland. -------------------- ![]() |

Stage 1: Maarten Wynants of Belgium lead most of the way, but after getting caught by the Peolton, Alessando Petacci gets the win for Lampre. But three crashes within the final three kilometers? WTF?
Special mention to Alexander Pliuschin, who managed to reach the lead group in the latter portion of Stage 1... P.S: The new Versus TdF theme music SUCKS! The previous version (that they've used for years) is much better... That was nasty today...just listening to everything that the riders said afterwards it was just...I don't know. Apparently there was some sort of oil on the road? I don't blame them for protesting that.
I agreed with the Versus guys, I didn't think Andy Shleck was going to recover from that...good for him though. And a huge congrats to Sylvain Chavanel who in April cracked his skull and was in a medically induced coma...impressive. -------------------- ![]() |

I'm calling this right now: George Hincapie, Cadel Evans, or anyone on that BMC team wins Stage 3. Sure, Hincapie may be a super-domestique, but because he is good on the cobblestones, expect him to be the playmaker tomorrow. Big George could (and should) get the go-ahead to win the stage, if the Defending World Champ can't keep up with him...
(If the lead group came down to Armstrong and Hincapie, I'm sure that Lance lets Hincapie take the Stage, as a thanks for helping him win seven Tours... Tyler Farrar of Garmin, who finished fifth at the Tour of Flanders and has an experienced cobbles rider in David Millar, could feasilbly win the Stage if they play their cards right... I don't mean to count Fabian Cancellara out, but he just relinquished the Yellow Jersey to take the pressure off of the Saxo Bank team, and is more focused on helping the Schleck Brothers; he's probably going to take them to the head of the main field (or just ahead of it), and sit there (keeping an eye out on the other GC threats, of course)... It's too bad that Tom Boonen and Roger Hammond aren't riding in this year's Tour; this Stage could've had their name on it... Ummm, at least Cadel Evans came close?
However, I was surprised that Fabian Cancellara would take the Yellow Jersey back; then again, it must've been Sylvian Chavanel falling so behind... I think that Cancellara punts the Yellow tomorrow, to take pressure off his team... -------------------- ![]() (Thanks Allison (aravilui) for the set, and to o0itzAnGiE and to Stacey for the blinkies!) I think that Cancellara punts the Yellow tomorrow, to take pressure off his team... Well Chavanel was extremely unlucky yesterday...he flatted out 3 times...that really takes it's toll. Plus the cobbles make it that much harder to catch up. Just turned on today's stage but I'll probably end up recroding it and watching it tomorrow... -------------------- ![]() |
