Steve and Jenn are amazing.

This Universal thing is a bit of a shock, but if it was not going to be Warner, I think we all expected it to be Universal. Kevin had heard that a Universal A&R was possibly managing kat (did i get that right kevin?), kat was in santa monica meeting with a record company (photos), kat's last.fm page, and then kat at that universal event.

Even so, this is a big surprise. But, Universal is a major, and it is good that Kat didnt necessarily need David to continue to be in the majors. I have heard of labels doing showcases for their artists, didnt know that it was also for potential endorsement opportunities. It wouldnt surprise me if she did this in more than one city. A lot of showcases happen at the house of blues in LA, too.

I do think it's quite possible Kat has a 360 deal. I mean, that's where the industry is going. That's all Warner supposedly does now a days.

As far as At Last, that'd be cool if it was on her album, though I believe it was sung probably just for the showcase. I hope Home wasn't sung. That song is whiney and cheesey. Steve, you should send your friend some youtube links to see if she can identify what song it was.

kat looked gorgous in that picture. She almost shouldnt be allowed to look that beautiful.

I asked her a bunch of times since then but backed off because I did not want to lose her friendship.

No reason? I think there's certainly argument for it. I am surprised pop/r&b given that is what the first album was. But I dont really want to read too much into it.

Just as I got home today, I caught Oprah Winfrey doing a voice-over on her show during the commercials promoting next week's shows. She's doing a 2-day inauguration special on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, one of her guests will be David Foster. Oprah's show is in Chicago. Could it be...?

I think Kat needs to establish herself in a particular genre or style (or maybe wants to) first before she tries veering off into different things. And I think it's what she wants to do for now. No reason for her to change at this particular juncture. I can see her perhaps doing an album of blues or jazz standards or something like that down the road, but for now, I think she's going to stick with pop/R&B. If I turn out to be wrong, I'll admit it, but I don't think I am.

Phil, you're so funny. But you're right, we seem to boomerang from one theory to another. We haven't really gotten enough proof one way or another to be sure she's signed with Warner or Universal (meaning, it's one of them, but we don't know which one at this point).

If it turns out that Kat isn't signed to a major, I'm going to be pretty annoyed at all the folks who steered us wrong.
