Take That director promises star-studded extravaganza for Olympic closing ceremony

By Laurie Whitwell
23rd February 2012

The closing ceremony for the Olympic Games will be an 'elegant mash-up of British music,' the team planning the multimillion pound show have revealed.

The sign-off for London 2012 will tell the history of British culture, including everything from 'Elgar to Adele' – but organisers stopped short of confirming this week's Brit Award-winner has been booked to perform.

Adele's '21' May Sell 300,000 In 22nd Week at No. 1

IPB Image

Adele's massive sales figures just keep piling up.

Her "21" set, which took home the Grammy Award for album of the year on Feb. 12, should spend its 22nd week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart next week. Industry sources suggest the album could sell another 300,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Feb. 26.

This past week, the diva's album -- her second -- reigned at No. 1 with 730,000 after the first full week post-Grammy Awards.

If "21" is No. 1 for a 22nd week, it will be the longest run at No. 1 for an album since Prince and the Revolution's "Purple Rain" soundtrack was tops for 24 weeks in 1984 and 1985.

The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 29.

Aiming for No. 2 next week is Whitney Houston's "Whitney: the Greatest Hits," with perhaps 150,000-170,000 sold. Adele and Houston's sets might be the only two albums to surpass 100,000 this week, as the next-biggest seller looks to be Tyga's new "Careless World." It's shaping up to sell around 80,000 to 90,000.

On Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart (below), Adele is No. 1 while Tyga is at No. 3. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (ending Sunday, Feb. 26) as reported by six major merchants.

(Houston's "Greatest Hits" is absent from the Building Chart, as it does not include catalog [older] albums. However, "Hits" will be present on the Billboard 200 next week.)

fun.'s sophomore album, "Some Nights," is at No. 2 on the Building chart and could arrive in the top five of the Billboard 200 next week. The effort is projected to sell around 50,000 to 60,000.

Other new albums that could perhaps start in the top 10 next week: Chiddy Bang's "Breakfast" and Sleigh Bells' "Reign of Terror." Chiddy Bang's set is exclusive to iTunes this week and may sell around 25,000. Sleigh Bells' effort could sell 30,000.

On the Building Chart, Chiddy Bang and Sleigh Bells are found at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.

As for the rest of the Building Chart's top 10, the "Now 41" compilation sits at No. 4, the "2012 Grammy Nominees" collection is No. 7 and Drake's "Take Care" is No. 8. Van Halen's "A Different Kind of Truth" is No. 9 and Rihanna's "Talk That Talk" is at No. 10.

Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart
Rank LW
BB 200 Artist Title
1 1 Adele "21"
2 NEW fun. "Some Nights"
3 NEW Tyga "Careless World"
4 3 Various Artists "Now 41"
5 NEW Chiddy Bang "Breakfast"
6 NEW Sleigh Bells "Reign of Terror"
7 5 Various Artists "2012 Grammy Nominees"
8 12 Drake "Take Care"
9 6 Van Halen "A Different Kind of Truth"
10 17 Rihanna "Talk That Talk"

The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

This is a nice article reviewing quotes from things Adele said over this past year b/c of 21.

She's so adorable! Love the photos, too. wub.gif

Gallery: Adele delivers 21 zingers

Adele's 21 has been No. 1 on Billboard for 21 consecutive weeks. To celebrate, here are 21 of Adele's best quotes during the year of 21.

February 22, 2012

Here are some funny example Adele quotes i picked out:

1. "Making a record is like standing in the middle of Trafalgar Square naked, you let everyone see your good bits and bad bits. I don't know what possesses me to do that, but I'm not good at anything else." --The Daily Telegraph
haha.gif
[i]3. "I like comforting people with my music, I like it. I like people saying you helped me get through this or whatever. I don’t think they’re going to say that about [a song that says] 'Oh I just won two Grammys, hanging out with Kanye or whatever. They’re gonna be like ‘F*ck off, you bitch.’" --Dose.ca

6. "You can't complain about your dressing room, or you look like Celine Dion." --The Observer

7. "I love seeing Lady Gaga's boobs and bum. I love seeing Katy Perry's boobs and bum. Love it. But that's not what my music is about. I don't make music for eyes. I make music for ears." --Rolling Stone

11. "It would be f*cking awful if my third album was about being happily settled down…and all the critics were, like, 'Yeah, it's f*cking sh*t. Can you be miserable, please?'" --Out Magazine

16. “I was always the joker at school. But I didn’t really realize I had a natural sense of humor until I started telling stories onstage. You get the timing down. Also, people laugh when I open my mouth anyway, even if I don’t tell a joke, because they are laughing at my accent.” --Vogue

20. Adele on her 2012 Grammy nominations: "I burst into tears when I found out. And I would love, absolutely love, to win. This record is coming to an end, and that would be the final brick on it.” --Vogue

And she did win! heart.gif heart.gif

Adele returns to the top of the UK Album Chart following Brit Awards controversy
Blur, Noel Gallagher and Coldplay also experience sales boost after O2 Arena ceremony

IPB Image

Adele has reclaimed her position at the top of the Official UK Album Chart with '21', climbing two places for its 21st non-consecutive week at the peak.

The 37 per cent increase in sales week on week has seen the Brit Award-winner break the 6 million mark for the sale of both her albums, reports the Official Charts Company

Emeli Sande drops to Number Two with her debut album 'Our Version Of Events' after just one week at the top, while Ed Sheeran creeps up two places into Number Three. Lana Del Rey drops two to Number Four with 'Born To Die' and 'Blur: The Best Of' re-enters the chart at Number 22.

In the singles chart this week, Goyte retakes the Number One spot with 'Somebody I Used To Know' leapfrogging Emeli Sande, who retains Number Two spot with 'Next To Me', while DJ Fresh drops to Number Three with 'Hot Right Now (Ft. Rita Ora)'.

Noel Gallagher, Coldplay and Florence And The Machine enjoyed singles chart success after performing at the Brit Awards with 'AKA…What A Life', 'Charlie Brown' and 'No Light No Light' climbing to Number 47, 30 and Nine, respectively.

The only new entry inside the Official Singles Chart Top 40 is Gym Class Heroes with 'Ass Back Home (Ft. Neon Hitch)' at Number 9.

I read that one of UK tabloids reported that Adele's grandma was in the hospital b/c of a heart attack, right before the Brits. That Adele was there w/her right before Adele went to the show.

I wonder if this is true? crying.gif
I don't always trust the tabloids, so I'll see if more info comes out later. Poor Adele if this is true. sad.gif
