This World Youth Day thing seems like a pretty huge event! Casey (Donovan) said that she will also be doing 2 performances for World Youth Day, but she's not too certain on the exact days and times yet. So it's good to see a few of the Idols involved.

Oh, thats fab news re Casey (just wait until people hear HER voice tongue.gif grin.gif ) Do let us know, and I'll spread it about too.

Hi Melissa honey. Its so exciting isn't it. (do just WISH media would acknowledge that Guy Sebastian, with Gary Pinto, wrote the Anthem that they are all talking about, instead of just saying the "Idols are going to sing it"! )

That makes about 3 doz. songs that Guy has written / co-written so far, available on CDs - 2 of which have reached platinum, and another 2 have reached Gold status. (more stats elsewhere)

oh I'll edit in just a few great Receive the Power youtubes from around the world!!

Receive the Power (written by Guy Sebastian and Gary Pinto)
QUOTE

A theological reflection on Guy Sebastian and Gary Pinto’s
“Receive the Power”

The song chosen as the theme song for the 23rd World Youth Day, to be celebrated in July 2008
in Sydney Australia, is entitled “Receive the Power”. It is built around the theme chosen by
Pope Benedict XVI: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you
will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8). This theme is in two parts: on the one hand, Christ renews
his promise to send the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8a; cf. Lk 24:44-53; Jn 7:37-39; 14:25; 16:13-14;
20:22) – a bequest fulfilled when the Holy Spirit descends upon the apostles at Pentecost and
beyond (Acts ch 2; cf. 3:31; 4:8,31; 8:14-17,39; 9:17; 10:44-48; 11:12-18; 13:52; 15:8; 19:1-7). On
the other hand, Christ spells out the response that this gift elicits, the life that this power
enables: the disciples are to be his “witnesses to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8b; 5:32; 10:34-
43; cf. Lk 24:44-53; Mt 28:19; Jn 15:27).

Dialogue in the Spirit between Christ and the young disciple
The song very effectively captures the two aspects of the theme. In the chorus the Risen Christ
addresses the young people of the world: “Alleluia, alleluia! Receive the power of the Holy
Spirit. Alleluia, Alleluia! Receive the power to be a light unto the world.” In the verses the
young people respond: “we will follow to the ends of the earth”; “we will answer and do Your
will”; “we’ll forever testify of Your mercy and unfailing love”; “we worship You”. This dialogue
in the Spirit between Christ and the young disciple is at the heart of evangelization,
catechesis, the act of faith and worship. It is at the heart of World Youth Day.

The song is Scriptural
One of the goals and undoubted fruits of World Youth Day is a rediscovery by the young
people of the richness of the Word of God, the Holy Bible. It is therefore fitting that not only
the central theme inspiring the song, but almost all the words of this song are Scriptural. As
the Acts of the Apostles makes very clear: the grace of the Holy Spirit is given to the disciple so
that he or she may testify to the central proclamation of God’s word (e.g. Acts 4:33).

The song is Holy Spirit-ual
The theme of WYD08 calls us to reflect upon the power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of young
people. The song invokes the Holy Spirit three times in the chorus, as Christ invites the young
people to “Receive the power of the Holy Spirit”. The young people respond in the verse “As
Your Spirit calls to rise we will answer and do Your will.” The strongly pneumatological aspect
of the song makes it particular to the World Youth Day in Sydney.

The song is Christological
The theme of WYD08 is taken from the last words Christ spoke to his disciples before he
ascended to the Father. The promise of the Holy Spirit is specifically linked by Christ to the
call to the disciple to witness, testimony, even martyrdom. But to whom? The Holy Spirit
empowers the young people not to give witness to themselves, not even to give witness to the
Spirit, but to give witness to Christ. “You will be my witnesses,” he says. The song articulates
the response of the faithful disciple to that call and empowerment.

The song is Eucharistic
The Spirit is given not for our own aggrandizement but to move us to worship and
thanksgiving. Thus at Pentecost the Spirit-filled disciples “devoted themselves to the apostles’
teaching and communion, to the Breaking of the Bread and the prayers” (Acts 2:42). The
young people sing in the opening verse “in Your presence we delight” and in the ‘bridge’ “Lamb
of God, we worship you. Holy one, we worship you. Bread of Life, we worship you. Emmanuel,
we worship you.” (Jn 1:29,36; 6:69; 6:35; Mt 1:33) This is a song of adoration which, for
Catholics at least, will evoke the Eucharistic Lord they worship. The climax of World Youth
Day is the Mass with the Holy Father and one of its fruits is greater Eucharistic devotion.

The song is Universal (‘catholic’)
The song opens with the words “Every nation, every tribe, come together to worship You” (Rev
7:9-10; cf. 5:9-11) This is a reference to all the young people from every nation and language
who will come as pilgrims and heralds of the Gospel to Australia for WYD08. This captures
another pneumatological aspect of the song. In the story of Pentecost the evil of Babel is
reversed: no longer are nations pitted one against the other; no longer do diverse languages
divide people and leave them uncomprehending. Instead, the Holy Spirit unites them all and
all understand each other. This is a gift of Pentecost and a gift of World Youth Day.

The song is Eschatological
In the Book of Revelation John has a vision “of a great multitude, too numerous to count, from
every nation, race, people and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb...
[and] cried out in a loud voice: ‘Salvation comes from our God... and from the Lamb.’”(Rev 7:9-
10; cf. 15:3-4) The WYD08 song is a premonition, a foretaste, of that day when by the power of
the Holy Spirit all divisions between peoples will cease and “every nation, every tribe” will
“come together to worship You... Lamb of God.”

Specificity and Continuity
Though the song is very specific to the theme of WYD08 in Sydney – with its multiple
references to the call and power of the Holy Spirit and to the witness of the young people – it
also cleverly recalls and unites the great catechetical themes chosen by the father of World
Youth Day, Pope John Paul II: “Emmanuel” (WYD2000 in Rome), “Light to the world”
(WYD02 Toronto) and “We worship you” (WYD05 Cologne). Thus the song expresses both the
specificity of WYD08 in Sydney and its continuity with more than twenty years of World
Youth Days – and indeed with two thousand years of Christian proclamation ever since the
Archangel Gabriel first named Jesus “Emmanuel – God with us” (Mt 1:33) and John the
Baptist first identified him as the “Lamb of God” (Jn 1:29,36).

Loved this one, you know. Slightly tongue in cheek - but....

What's Hot? The WYD08 site, that's what!!

Earlier this year that the World Youth Day website - www.wyd08.org -was getting around 2.5 million hits per month. We thought that extraordinary for an event that was still 18 months away .

But then, since March, its been averaging around more than 5 million hits per month. In June we hit a record 5.7 million hits. But all that is going to seem mild by the end of July, we've already hit more than 4.9 million hits in the first half of the month.

Most interest is from Australia, US, Italy and Germany. I didn't know Guy Sebastian had so many fans!

so much is being made of the merchandise for WYD, in our OZ media - but they're totally missing the point that this is to raise funds towards the actual running / holding of WYD event. Usual sort of media blurb, in the lead up lots of 'discussion' as to where the moneys are coming from, and then when there's the merchandise stalls to help in this regard, the media get on the bandwagon. Ya can't win!! ermm.gif

original.gif

wish I could get to Sydney - Hyde Park, and major yellow tent! Can't miss it.

Mind you, that was a couple of years ago and he may be figuring with the semi shave look now.

QUOTE
t seems that if you oder from www.pilgrimpride.com.au, the order cut-off date is 7 days before 23 July (ie. 16 July). Uncollected items by 23 July will be cancelled and no refunds will be given. Ordered items have to be picked up from the WYD Hyde Park store as pilgrimpride has no delivery service.

all items ordered from www.shop.wyd2008.org are sent by Australia Post. there are no cut-off dates posted in that website.

more info are in those websites. smile.gif

otherwise, there are plenty of items that you can buy directly from the WYD Hyde Park store and other WYD stores around Sydney, no pre-ordering required.

Available is the DVD, the single, and the Receive the Power album - with so many of our own artists from around the world (idols) featured (because not only are they popular but many come from a gospel background)

my time is almost non-existent!!! argghhh

from the forum

QUOTE
ast Saturday, we had our rehearsal at Barangaroo for tomorrow's Opening mass. The mass will be held from 4:30 to 6:30pm and the concert featuring Guy, Paulini and Damien is from 7 to 10pm.

Barangaroo is located the the far end of King street wharf. There was still lots of work to be done as at last Saturday but I am sure all will be right for tomorrow. The area is divided into pods or sections. There's a VIP section where seats are provided. The pilgrims have been allocated to the next best section but there are no seats provided.

Here are a few pics to give you an idea of the Opening mass and concert venue. smile.gif

...............

for those interested, Barangaroo can only be accessed by walking during WYD. Nearest train station is Wynyard and take the York street exit. On York street, turn left and upon reaching Margaret street, turn. Walk down and cross Clarence street and continue walking down till you see stairs (this is a short cut). Take the stairs and you'll reach Hickson road. Cross Hickson road and turn right towards the wharves. There'll be gates along Hickson road for entry to the Opening mass and concert.

The site is massive as they expect for it to accomodate 150,000 people.

There are loads of ways to participate in WYD for free. Yes, registered pilgrims will get priority entry into the events, but anyone can come along. It's not a matter of restricting entry to those who have paid - WYD is not about money (despite what the media is saying), and money will not be a factor when it comes to participation in this celebration. It's just about having enough room to accommodate everyone who wants to attend - there is no way to estimate how many people will just "show up" on the day, and venues can only take so many people. I think it's only fair that registered pilgrims are guaranteed entry into the events - many have come long distances to get here.

Pilgrims at Randwick will have a dedicated space near the front. There will be space in Randwick behind the places reserved for volunteers/homestay hosts for anyone wishing to come along without paying (on a first come, first served basis), and then there is plenty of room in Centennial Park, with giant screens erected so that you can fully participate in the event.

Comment from yesterday on the forum
QUOTE
I also managed to have a fairly sensible (for me) conversation with him without totally losing my train of thought. I know, I know, it's not easy. tongue.gif Such an extraordinarily luscious creature up close, ain't he? She added, I also enjoyed Bonnie Boezeman, the producer of Receive the Power. She talked about when they were choosing the WYD 2008 song and they had 48 hours to go and she still didn't feel they had the right song. She just had a feeling that she wanted to try Guy. So Guy and Gary very quickly came up with RTP, Bonnie market 'tested' it and - as we know, RTP was the one.

Further to the above re choosing the song
QUOTE
This lady introduced Guy and is also part of the RTP video. She said that they received thousands of entries for the WYD theme song but were not 100% sure they have the right song. Someone suggested to her to approach Guy, and gave Guy and Gary 24 or 48 hours(?) to submit an entry, and the rest is history.

ANOTHER EDIT!!! laughing.gif From another report from attendance yesterday

QUOTE
while we were at Hyde Park yesterday, a guy from Telstra approached us. He offered to take our picture from his camera phone and they'd print them for free, and he said no catch. It was their offer for WYD. So we had our pic taken. A few seconds later, they SMSed us that our pics were ready. The picture was printed with WYD icons as border, and the picture was placed in a blue WYD Telstra folder.

so if you want a free WYD souvenir pic, go to the Telstra tent next to the WYD merchandise store. smile.gif

An article from the Herald Sun:

World Youth Day opening mass begins

TENS of thousands of joyful young Catholics were welcomed to Australia for World Youth Day as the first major event of the six-day festival got underway.

An estimated 150,000 pilgrims from around Australia and the world chanted, sang and danced their way to Barangaroo, near Sydney's Darling Harbour, for the 4.30pm (AEST) opening mass to be delivered by Cardinal George Pell, the leader of the Catholic church in Australia.

The pre-mass celebrations included a flag ceremony followed by the arrival of the WYD cross and a large religious icon depicting Madonna and child, both of which have travelled around Australia for the past 12 months.

Casey Donovan, the singer who rose to fame on the reality talent show Australian Idol, then joined other indigenous performers, including dancers and didgeridoo players from around Australia and the Torres Strait Islands.

Cheers rang out as Prime Minister Kevin Rudd took the stage with a wave to welcome the faithful in several languages, including German, Italian and French.

To the Australian pilgrims, he said: "G'Day, and have a great time Down Under".

"Australia welcomes the youth of the world to Sydney. Australia welcomes the youth of the world to this celebration of faith and this celebration of life," he said.

"And as prime minister of Australia I welcome you from every land, every part, every continent on this our planet."

He said the young pilgrims were "so much the light of the world at a time when the world has so much darkness".

"Too often in the history of the world, when young people travel in great number to other parts of the world, they do so in the cause of war, but you here today are here as pilgrims of peace.

"Some say there is no place for faith in the 21st century, I say they are wrong. Some say that faith is the enemy of reason, I say also they are wrong."

Thanks for the info. From the sounds of it (we have so much in our own forum, look under Gallery - Coco post - a few reports plus photos there) its an amazing time for everyone. Media as usual are whinging 'on behalf of Oz' but its a lot of piffle really. And not EVERYONE are Catholic, its "World Youth", period. Heard where a Muslim school is actually hosting a bunch of Catholic pilgrims. Way to go! grin.gif
