Kelly Clarkson to perform on Australian Idol

Article from: The Daily Telegraph
September 26, 2007 12:00am
QUOTE

IN 2005 she was too cool to perform on Australian Idol, but two years on and pop star Kelly Clarkson has finally agreed to sing on the international TV franchise that propelled her to superstardom.

In Sydney this weekend to flog her third album, My December, the Grammy Award-winning singer is on track to perform the hit single Never Again on Australian Idol this Monday night.

It was a case of never again for Clarkson and Idol during her last trip to Oz, when - on the advice of her management - the singer refused to appear on the talent show in a bid to shake off her American Idol tag and focus on "credibility".

Having since won two Grammys and gone multi platinum, Clarkson is now all that and more - and clearly comfortable with her Idol background.

Kelly Clarkson to Perform During Cowboys' Thanksgiving Halftime Show

Last Edited: Thursday, 04 Oct 2007, 12:56 PM CDT
Created: Thursday, 04 Oct 2007, 12:41 PM CDT

The Dallas Cowboys have announced that Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson will be the featured performer during the team’s Thanksgiving Day halftime show.

The Nov. 22 concert will kick off the Salvation Army Red Kettle Christmas fund-raiser, according to a press release. The event will be broadcast from Texas Stadium during the Cowboys’ match-up against the New York Jets.

Clarkson, a North Texas native, will perform songs from her latest album, "My December," including the single “Never Again,” to help raise money for the charity. She will also serve as honorary chairperson for the Red Kettle campaign.

Clarkson initially rose to fame after winning the title of "American Idol" during the first season of the FOX reality show.

'Idol' Kelly Clarkson at Beacon Theatre

QUOTE

Some people are born rock stars. Kelly Clarkson is not one of them. blarg.gif

But we knew that already. The first winner of TV's "American Idol," Clarkson has worn her crown in the same dutiful way that Miss Americas do after the pageant is over: keeping up appearances and performing all the tasks expected. She sang weepy pop songs, uptempo pop songs, even slightly angry pop songs - "Miss Independent" remains her best moment - and generally maintained a likable, everygirl image.

Her new role as a rebel has been less successful. Against the wishes of her record company, RCA, she insisted on writing her own songs - rock songs, yet - for her third album, "My December," released in June. She publicly criticized RCA's legendary chairman, Clive Davis, but later apologized; then came the album, a dour affair that debuted at No. 2 but quickly slid down the charts. Due to slow ticket sales, Clarkson's tour was postponed and downsized into smaller venues. On Sunday it kicked off with a three-night run at Manhattan's Beacon Theatre.

There Clarkson tried her best to act like a dangerous rock chick. She re-created the Gothic tableau of her album cover, appearing in a blood-red dress on a stage tangled with dead vines, though she quickly ditched that outfit for simple black leggings and a tank top. With a five-piece band and two female singers (who looked much tougher than she did), Clarkson turned up the volume but rarely channeled the true spirit of rock and roll.

Like all her fellow "Idol" alums, Clarkson isn't really an artist charting her own course; she's an eager student trying to find the "right" answers. On television she was graded on multiple-choice tests (technique, presence, professionalism) and it has shaped her study habits ever since. Rock music - the real, wild kind - isn't so easily quantified, but Clarkson hasn't yet learned that lesson.

So her show became an exercise in point-scoring, and her tally was low on new songs like "One Minute" and "Don't Waste Your Time." She stood with legs primly together instead of triumphantly apart; she bobbed her head instead of banging it. At one point she rubbed her back coyly against a guitarist, a move she's probably seen somewhere, but there was no real friction. Only on "Hole" did she dig down and find the dark rock singer within, leaning back and shouting until her voice cracked with passion.

Things improved during the show's second half, when she returned to chipper pop hits like "Since U Been Gone," tear-jerkers like Patty Griffin's "Up to the Mountain" and the button-pushing ballad "Because of You," which got the whole crowd emoting along with her. She also sang a hidden new album track called "Chivas" that denounces an ex-beau.

But really - what kind of rocker drinks Chivas?

KELLY CLARKSON. The "American Idol" graduate enrolls in the school of rock. Sunday-Tuesday at the Beacon Theatre, Manhattan.

Kelly Clarkson: Small-town girl with the big-time voice rocks Mohegan Sun

By Kristina Dorsey Published on 10/22/2007

QUOTE

Here is why we love Kelly Clarkson: She's an everyday gal with a superhuman voice. w00t.gif

Those attributes were on spirited display during her Sunday concert at Mohegan Sun Arena. The 25-year-old exuded down-home warmth throughout the show, and her voice was strong and supple, proving that she is truly one of the best young female singers out there right now.

That isn't easy when the songs are as vocally demanding as those from her latest CD, “My December.” They are dramatic and fueled by hurt, inspired as they were by a rather bitter breakup. “Never Again” requires a range and passion that could easily slide into screechiness and schmaltz when sung live. Clarkson, though, performed it with vocal control and true emotion. On the gorgeously mournful “Sober,” when her voice soared up an octave for a chorus, it was as thrilling as it is on CD.

It was frankly a bit surprising that she sounded as hearty live as she does on her recordings. Most CD productions sweeten vocals so much that the in-concert version is often a let-down. Not with Clarkson. Not at all.

Her voice may be a force of nature, but her personality is approachable and relatable, which is probably why she drew so many teen and preteen girls Sunday. The “American Idol” winner was ingratiating in a girl-next-door way. She felt free to mention how hot it was in the arena and that she was worried about sweating through her silky violet-and-black top. And apparently even a star has to answer to her mama. As an intro to “Be Still,” Clarkson explained that she is sure to perform that song at each concert because it's her mother's favorite from the new CD.

The set list was heavy with numbers from “My December,” but Clarkson broke out some of her earlier hits, too, including “Miss Independent” and the show-closer “Since U Been Gone.” Although her newer numbers are a bit darker, they maintain a musical and lyrical attitude in which even sorrow is laced with strength.

Not that record executives felt comfortable with the new tunes. They wanted “My December” to be poppier, but Clarkson stuck to her beliefs and even discussed the disagreement publicly, creating a bit of a media storm.

Then, Clarkson postponed her summer tour in support of “My December” because of slow ticket sales. This tour is a scaled-back version of that one, although she did play the 10,000-seat Arena, which was packed, although not sold out. In most cities, she is now playing theaters rather than arenas, and that's probably a good idea. Don't get me wrong - Clarkson's huge voice is arena-sized. But she's still developing a stage performance style that can fill a cavernous hall like Mohegan Sun Arena. She tends to stand in the middle of the stage and sing, or break into a little pogo dance at most. She doesn't use the entire stage or really match the space.

And if she's going to do an arena show, she needs to find people to create better video images. Two screens showed close-ups of Clarkson, but there were also other screens that displayed what seemed like bad Rorschach tests. For “Addicted,” bubbles floated upward. “Hole” was accompanied by some psychedelic abstracts that looked as though they belonged on “Laugh-In.”

The only other caveat about the concert was it could have been longer. Clarkson was onstage for about an hour and 15 minutes. Maybe she was going by the old showbiz adage: leave them wanting more.

KELLY CLARKSON: Five things you might not have known
By Kevin Purdy/purdyk@gnnewspaper.com
Greater Niagara Newspapers

Five things you might not have known about ... Kelly Clarkson

1 It was a long, low-wage road to “American Idol:” Clarkson was acknowledged for her singing talents at a young age, but growing up with a single mother left no money for voice training. Instead, Clarkson mowed lawns, took movie tickets and held down jobs at Subway, Starbucks and Papa John’s — she later worked as a door-to-door vacuum cleaner saleswoman.

2 About that last album ... The short version of the story behind “My December” is that record label head Clive Davis asked Clarkson to make major revisions and nix some of its darker themes. Clarkson, however, refused to back down, leading to hasty release, a canceled tour and, so far, lower overall sales. On the flip side, the album has garnered slightly more positive reviews than any of her previous efforts.

3 Weird indie semi-credibility: It might be a stretch to say Clarkson is the most punk of the “Idol” set, but then again, maybe not. She’s actually compared “My December” in press interviews with Bruce Springsteen’s dark personal epic “Nebraska” — a stretch, but a nice show of rock knowledge — and declined to move to New York City or Los Angeles after her big “Idol” win, staying on a 60-acre farm with her brother. And “My December” even features a guest appearance by punk icon Mike Watt, whose work, it can be assumed, Sanjaya is not all that familiar with.

4 She’s an inspiration to STEVE CARELL: During the infamous chest-waxing scene in the hit comedy film “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Kelly Clarkson!” is one of the more intelligible ad-libbed — and G-rated — screams issued by Carell.

5 She might need a little inspiration herself: Just a few quotes from a recent interview with Elle magazine: “My point of view is that I shouldn’t be a mother at all, because I’d be horrible ... I’m not willing to be that selfless.” And: “I’ve sold more than 15 million records worldwide, and still nobody listens to what I have to say because I’m 25 and a woman.” Finally, heavy with sarcasm: “I am a good singer, so I can’t possibly be a good writer ... Women can’t possibly be good at two things.”
