Consumers will vote with their dollars next week when "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard's debut single is released on the same day as that of runner-up Clay Aiken. Both are due Tuesday (June 10), less than three weeks after the finale of the Fox reality show/talent contest's second season.
Studdard and Aiken will be seen promoting their singles Tuesday on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." The "American Idol" -themed episode of the syndicated show will also feature first season runner-up Justin Guarini, whose self-titled RCA album will be released that day.

Studdard's J Records single will feature his version of Westlife's "Flying Without Wings" and his cover of the Carpenters' "Superstar." RCA will issue Aiken's rendition of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and the original song "This Is the Night," written by Aldo Nova, Gary Burr, and Chris Braide. The singers performed each of the songs during the "Idol" contest.

Both artists are expected to release their debut albums in September. RCA Music Group chairman and J Records founder Clive Davis will executive produce both.

Studdard will return home to Birmingham, Ala., on Sunday to make a video for "Flying Without Wings." The Eric White-directed clip may be shot in the city's Linn Park, with local fans invited to take part in the "welcome home" celebration. At deadline the site had not yet been confirmed, according to a label representative.

A third "American Idol" season is planned. A banner on the show's Web site says only that it will return in 2004, but gives no exact dates for the competition or audition information.

Life is so very fragile.
We are all vulnerable and we will all at some point in our lives fall; we will all fall.
We must carry this in our hearts.. that what we have is special.
That it can be taken from us, and that when it is taken from us, we will be tested.
We will be tested to our very souls.
It is these times, it is this pain, that allows us to look inside ourselves.

Yes, both singers will do well. But, if we are true fans, it is our responsibility to go out and buy the cd. And buy it again if we have too, would make a great gift for someone! And we will have to email magazines and radio stations with requests for stories and covers and for them to play his cd, over and over again. then we will "Lift him up".
It will not happen if we sit and watch and do nothing. OOOPS...sorry, I think that everyone knows that. Anyway, I used to work for a radio station and it truely are the calls and requests and purchases that make a song climb the chart. It is a numbers game. Sorry...Will get off my soapbox now. I hope that I did not offend anyone, I am just a strong Clay fan.

I didnt realize that "This is the Night" was an original. How come Clay is singing an original? Maybe i'm reading it wrong. I dont know. It seems to me like Clay is getting the better end of the deal...while i'm not really complaining it just seems a little weird. I mean he didnt "win". It makes the whole American Idol season seem a little fake. I'm happy that he is getting this much press and stuff. I thought he should have won. Like i said Im not complainig..just curious.

its possible they were predicting that clay would win. he was the only one who was never in the bottom two. what threw ruben over the top was all the kim fans and they couldnt predict that so they were guessing and gave clay the original. also probably because hes got the range and power for that song.

thats my guess anyway.

I dont know...i would think that Ruben would get the original song because simon loved him so much. Simon wanted Ruben to win and he was pushing Ruben to the fans the whole time...so then why give Clay the original song? It just doesnt make sense. :-?

Although I adore both of these "idols", I do think the wrong person won! Ruben is fantastic, but Clay, by far, has the stronger, more powerful and moving voice! However, looking at the 'bright side', Clay has received a recording contract on his 'own merits' and will be more able to record the type of music we love to hear him sing. Ruben, on the other hand, is at the mercy of the AI producers and . . . frankly, what Kelly Clarkson is singing now, versus what she sung to win the show, are two totally different types of music! I think she was much better during the competition.

So . . . for all it's worth . . . Yeah for Clay! I think he has a better chance of making a life-long career for himself and I look forward to it! Ruben, best of luck to you "Dawg" -- don't let them change you too much!

I think that Clay will be number one, but I think Ruben might stay on the charts a bit longer, but I don't think he'll beat out Clay to number one.

I'm not sure but I think Clay's single will probably go further and go to #1. And Ruben just a bit behind it.

I know for a fact I will buy Clay's single, but not sure when.

I didn't really like Ruben's voice, it was just plain and smooth. Sometimes touching. But Ruben will do good, but if he is going into this business, his weight is a big problem.
