Two's A Crowd, A Danielle and Jordan White story :) Options

“Jordy, do you want some popcorn for your big night?” My mom called from the kitchen. I shook my head, nervously focusing my eyes on the TV, which I had been doing for the entire day, waiting for the final moment of American Idol 2 to come. Danielle, my twin sister, smiled.

“Mom, she’s too scared to eat,” Danielle teased and normally, I would have taken the pillow from beside me and smacked her, but I was too focused to do the less. Danielle bounced up and down on our dad’s leather chair, also waiting for the end of the show, which hadn’t really started yet. I knew she didn’t care who won and she was just there for me. I was the biggest Clay Aiken fan known to man, and everyone knew it. They also knew that if Clay didn’t win tonight, I would die completely. My fingers had fallen off from the previous night of punching in Clay’s numbers for four straight hours. Danielle helped a little from our cell phone, but got bored and watched Will and Grace. Personally, if it’s not American Idol, it’s not worth watching. So I continued dialing and she watched TV.

I watched Clay and Ruben take turns singing on stage for the last time. Ruben was good. He was very talented. But he was Clay’s rival, so he was mine also. My eyes turned to anger as Ruben sang his final number and Danielle laughed.

“You’re too in to it,” she told me, but the words sifted through my brain as I watched Ruben sing. The show went to a commercial break and came back with Ruben and Clay on stage, Ryan standing beside them. Ryan announced something about an American Idol for kids, and I’d bet the world that Danielle’s eyes grew the size of oranges, but I was fixated on Clay’s face. My hands squeezed together and my palms were sweating. I swallowed hard. This was it. I wasn’t ready. I had watched Clay from his audition to this final moment. My heart was dedicated to him and would forever me. I took a deep breath and my stomach dropped.

“The winner of American Idol is…” Ryan said and delayed the winner. I wanted to take a gun to Ryan’s head and make him say it now. But I didn’t move. I couldn’t. I knew Danielle was looking at me and not the TV, because my expression was probably more priceless than Clay’s or Ruben’s. Finally, Ryan said his final two words. “Ruben Studdard!” I remained motionless. Tears sprung into my eyes and I finally covered my face with my hands. No longer were tears just in my eyes, but now streaming down my cheeks and onto my hands. Danielle came over and put her arms around me and I squeezed my eyes shut tight. I lifted my head so my tear stained face was visible and stood up.

“I’m okay,” I whispered, speaking my first words all night, and walked quickly into our room. We both knew that I wasn’t okay, but Danielle knew enough to leave me alone for the rest of the night. I laid on my bed, staring at my Clay-filled ceiling and walls, not one single thought entering my mind. Finally, they all began to pour in at once. ‘Ruben Studdard!’ I could hear Ryan’s voice echoing in my head. ‘Ruben Studdard!’ ‘Shut up!’ I screamed silently to Ryan in my mind. ‘Shut up shut up shut up! Why didn’t you say Clay?’ I closed my eyes again, making my Clay filled room disappear, and entered my fantasy world filled with just me and Clay. I slowly drifted off to sleep as I was still crying, dreaming of Clay singing on the American Idol stage, me beside him with a microphone in my hand too. As they said in the Matrix, tomorrow is another day.

I looked up at the plain white ceiling. It wasn’t nearly as cool as my room, but I made do. I looked beside me and saw Danielle was sleeping. I made a face and sat up. I wasn’t at all tired. It was Danielle’s orange sized eyes that got our mom to let us do American Juniors, the pint sized version of American Idol. Both Danielle and I had made it into the top ten on the TV show and the ten of us were competing for a spot in a five-piece group of fame. Danielle had a really good voice and I had to admit, I was jealous. I was nowhere NEAR as good as she and I was convinced that either her, or a fourteen-year-old southern girl by the name of Lucy Hale, would be the first one in. I, however, was another story. Over the course of a few weeks of auditions and a week of the semifinals, I had gotten a chance to know the other eight kids pretty well.

Lucy Hale was a sweetheart. She acted like your mother, but in a cute way. She always called everybody “honey” or “sweetie” or the ever popular southern “darlin’” with the southern twang. She was the oldest of the ten of us, and the only one that was fourteen, so she was the mommy of the group. I liked Lucy.

Chantel Kohl was the next oldest. She had a really powerful voice, both singing and not! She loved to yell and sometimes I tried hard not to plug my ears. Chantel was nice like Lucy, though.

Katelyn Tarver was next. Lucy, Chantel and Katelyn were best friends. Katelyn was gorgeous. I envied her good looks and natural appeal for guys. Every place Katelyn would walk, the jaws of men would hang open. Exaggeration? None. She had long blonde silky hair, bright blue eyes, and was tall and thin. Every guy’s dream girl. Katelyn was from Georgia, so she had the southern thing going on like Lucy. I love her voice.

AJ Melendez, I still didn’t know very well. He’s a year older than me and the hottie of the group. Personally, I didn’t think he was that cute, but that’s just my opinion. Danielle was in love with him. As were all the younger girls (which excludes Lucy, Chantel and Katelyn). He had a fairly good voice and was a good guy. He’s a guy, so he’s very hard to read. Getting to know AJ would take some time.

Morgan Burke could always make me laugh, even in auditions when we were all nervous. He was a really good dancer and an even better joke teller. He was real smooth and always knew the right things to say. I think Morgan was my favorite of all the guys, if favorites were allowed.

Chauncey Matthews was the final of the three guys. He’s eleven like me and really cute. Cute as a little kid, not as in I would date him. Chauncey is a sweetheart and is the kind of guy who would be your best friend and always be there for you.

Taylor Thompson was complex. She had a good voice and awed the crowd and the rest of us. Although she had what it took to make it, she was kind of a snot to everyone. She was really bossy to her little sister, who took all of her crap. Taylor thought she was better than everyone else.

Tori Thompson was the baby of the group, and Taylor’s little sister. I loved Tori. She was only nine and a little cutie pie! Even though she was small, she had a huge voice, bigger than her sister’s! Getting to know Tori would be an adventure.

As I laid in bed and thought about all the contestants, my mind drifted off and I finally fell asleep.

“This is it,” Ryan said as I grabbed Danielle’s hand. We stood center stage, waiting for Ryan to tell us who the last person to make it into the group was. It was between Danielle and me. I was still mad at Ryan for announcing Ruben over Clay, but I tried not to let that stand in the way. I looked at my sister who flashed me a nervous smile. My hands were sweaty, but Danielle held my hand and squeezed it tight anyways. “And the winner is…Danielle White!” Danielle let go of my hand and screamed, jumping up and down and I was pushed aside. I stood back watching Ryan hug Danielle, who then took the microphone and began to sing her encore.

I sat straight up, raveled in white hotel sheets and sweat. It was only a dream. I looked around and realized that everyone was staring at me.

“Jordy, are you okay?” My dad asked and I took a deep breath. Danielle laughed a little.

“That must have been some dream,” Danielle said. “You were moving around and yelling in your sleep.” I looked at my hands, which were trembling. I grabbed the sheet and gave my sister a stiff smile.

“I’m okay,” I told her and she looked at me. She could read me like a children’s book. She knew that I wasn’t and I knew she’d ask me later. I was right.



“So what was the dream about?” Danielle asked me later that day as we headed down to the studio to practice. I made a sour face with my mouth and scratched the back of my head.

“Well,” I began. I knew I had to tell her sometime, so why fight it? “It was the last episode and you and I were in the final two.” Danielle giggled.

“That’s not right,” she told me. “You know we’re gonna be the first two in the group!” I laughed nervously. ‘Yeah, right,’ I thought to myself. ‘We as in you and Lucy maybe.’ I continued, not letting Danielle know what was going through my mind at the time.

“And Ryan was going to announce the last person in,” I continued with a short breath. “And he said you were the winner and you kind of pushed me back and you hugged Ryan and grabbed the mic and…sang. That was it; end of dream.” I told her in a rush and she gave me a funny look.

“That’s what you were tossing and turning and yelling about?” Danielle asked and I stopped.

“What do you mean?” I questioned her and she looked taken aback a little.

“Well it’s not like you were being chased by thousands of Ruben Studdards or something,” Danielle mentioned with a shrug. I bit my lip. This is exactly why I didn’t want to tell her.

“You think it was a happy dream?” I asked her rather loudly. “Danielle, that’s like my worst nightmare. Standing up there against you. And everyone in the world knows that if both of us are standing up there, you’re gonna be the one to get in. Then you’ll just push me aside like I’m the nothing that I really am.”

“What are you talking about?” Danielle asked me and laughed loudly. “We both have the same shot.”

“No, that’s where you’re wrong,” I told her. “We don’t. You’re favored to get in, I’m not.” And with that, I walked ahead of her into the studio, leaving Danielle behind and confused.
