Adam Lambert Speaks on His Thoughts on His New Album

"Meeting my present boyfriend was an extremely powerful and important event"

On 11 January, at Adam Lambert's management office, we were able to have an early preview of six tracks off his upcoming album Trespassing (due 28 March). (With the exception of "Better Than I Know Myself", his first single due 22 February, the songs were still in a rare, pre-mastered, rough-mix state.) Although the single this time is a gorgeous and dramatic ballad, the other five songs are quite varied.

"Kickin' In" and the album's title track, "Trespassing" – written with N.E.R.D's Pharrell Williams – are dance numbers with extremely funky bass and beats that make one want to get onto one's feet. In both songs, Adam's vocals are a little reminiscent of Michael Jackson and uplift the spirit. "Cuckoo", written with Bonnie Mckee (Katy Perry's "California Gurls", "Teenage Dream"), is an extremely enjoyable dance-pop piece.

These songs are balanced out by the other tracks: For instance there's the slightly dark ballad "Broken English"; and there's also "Underneath", which is a really gorgeous song that begins with just Adam's vocals accompanied by piano. The songs are all brilliant. It seems that Adam has decided to split the songs in Trespassing into two halves of light and dark songs. Both these sides of fun as well as serious, soul-penetrating songs will surely make the album an enjoyable one.

Later in the evening, a media event was held in a room of a stylish hotel near the management office. Adam had been fielding questions as well as getting photos taken by media from Japan and Europe all day. We were last and by the time it came to our turn, it was already past 8PM. Despite all that, Adam was cute and smiley as he answered our questions.

- In the latest press release, you said, "[Trespassing has been] an exciting journey through the past two years of my life. It's been a transformative period." Let's talk about events that have stood out to you in the past two years. What comes to mind?

Adam Lambert: I think it would have to be meeting my present boyfriend. That was an extremely powerful and important event. By building a relationship with him, my life has really changed. It's really enriched my life; it's inspired me and made me feel really good. It's really exciting. I've been seeking a relationship like this for the longest time. My boyfriend feels the same way too.

- Which song in your new album Trespassing reflects this experience?

Adam: There are a few songs that do that. I don't think you've heard it yet, but "Broken English" is a song that reflects the challenges and rewards of this relationship; "Naked Love" also reflects my relationship. There's also "Shady", which is about the night I met my boyfriend. There's also "Outlaws of Love"; well, I've found love – but there are others who are in similar relationships yet face adversity. This song talks about that. The gay and lesbian community faces many obstacles that crop up in different forms. There's lots of positive things for sure, but there are also some very troubling, sad things. I've heard that even in Japan it's difficult to come out. This song is about that. By being open about the love you've chosen, you become an outlaw. Because of this love, you'll never find peace of mind. It's really difficult. And that's why this song is very honest and very real. I hope this song will cheer and uplift people, because it is a song that evokes emotions, and that people can relate to. By bringing these feelings to the forefront, perhaps people that carry this burden of sadness would come to realise that they aren't alone.

- I've heard that the theme of "Outlaws of Love" is on gay marriage. I guess it's not just about that, is it?

Adam: Well, it does include that aspect. But it's not just about marriage, it's also about what it means to be gay. Yet, what's cool about this song is even though I wrote the song with that meaning in mind, when I let friends and family listen to it, their interpretations of it were quite varied. The song is written in a way that's open to interpretation. And that's why, it can be a song about a "Romeo & Juliet"-esque pair of unfortunate lovers; or it could be about the judgement and persecution one faces because of the person one's chosen to love. The song's message is really universal.

- It's something that no matter who you are, you'd be able to relate to, isn't it?

Adam: Yes.

The Blonds show was more fun than any room of people should be allowed to have during Fashion Week. High energy doesn’t even begin to describe it. "Queen is a legendary rock band whose lead singer is widely respected as one of, if not the, best male rock singer of many generations. He was a gay man who died tragically young of AIDs related complications effectively robbing the world of his, voice, talent and super charged charisma. Rock music and dare I say, music in general, has been a little less fun and OTT since his passing.

The fact that his last performance was at the very venue where Adam will be performing is a huge deal for so many reasons not the least of which is that Adam will get on that stage as an open and proud gay man (something that Freddie wasn't able to do in his lifetime) and he will sing those songs with as much power and passion as Freddie did. Finland's happy son-in-law

Pop singer Adam Lambert tries to find a balance between his dark and light side. He found true love with his Finnish partner, Sauli Koskinen.

Singer Adam Lambert arrives at our meeting in a hotel in Los Angeles dressed in all black and greets me in fluent Finnish.
- Moi! Mitä kuuluu?

Adam rose to success from American Idol, and up until a couple of years ago, described himself as someone who likes to flirt and date a lot. Meeting Sauli Koskinen, 26, over a year ago in Helsinki changed him.

- I'm totally faithful, monogamous. A relationship is a beautiful thing. I believe we both want the same thing. I was ready for true love and I'm happy to have found it, Adam sums up his relationship with Sauli.

Salty licorice and shots

Last year, Adam and Sauli spent Valentine's Day in Tahiti. This year, Adam is traveling the world promoting his new album.

- Sauli is welcome to join me whenever it's possible. I always try to arrange something nice for special occasions.

The couple spend much of their free time at their home on the Hollywood hills.

- We did yoga for a while last year, but neither of us felt like it was our thing. We'd rather go for walks or jogging, and we have a treadmill at home. We watch tv and movies and cook together. We have a lot of salmiakki (salty licorice) at home, but I don't care for it. Other than that, I like Finnish food and culture.

Adam is also familiar with Finnish drinks from his vacation in Finland over last Christmas. One drunken night in Helsinki made headlines around the world. In the small hours, Adam was taken into custody in Pasila and Sauli in Töölö.

- It was a perfect holiday, apart from one mistake, a night out where the strong mint schnapps tasted too good and resulted in a loss of control, Adam says.

He and Sauli worked through the incident right after it happened.

- We laughed about it, right after we'd gotten over the initial shock and made sure no one was hurt. Sauli's family made fun of me, too - ”oh, you went to jail for getting drunk. Welcome to Finland!”

Adam says things happen in life and you learn from your mistakes.

- We talked more about what happened after we got home. Time helped put it into perspective. I understood that I have responsibilities to myself, my loved ones, my family, my friends and my fans. That December night was childish, out-of-control and irresponsible. I have to take more responsibility for my actions in future and be more careful around alcohol.

Meeting Sauli's family

When Adam talks about the good things on his visit to Finland, his face lights up in a wide, genuine smile and his voice rises in enthusiasm. The reason for visiting Finland, meeting Sauli's family, was a success.

- It was important to both of us that I get to know Sauli's family. We had a lovely, traditional Christmas Eve at his parents' home. His mom, dad and sisters were nice. I followed things from the sidelines at times, because the main language of the evening was Finnish. But it was only fair, since Sauli has been in the same position in Los Angeles.

Adam has had to resort to body language before. When he was 19, he performed on a cruise ship with the Anita Mann group. The gig lasted ten months, and during that time, he also visited Finland for the first time.

- I sailed around the world with an international crew. The experience broadened my horizons, and I understood how small my home town San Diego really is.

A couple of years later, he performed in a production of Hair in Germany.

- I didn't speak any German, but I learned to communicate without words. I had to explain a lot of things using my hands and different facial expressions. Sometimes not sharing a language is challenging, frustrating and confusing, but there's a magic to body language. And it's often more honest than repeating learned phrases.

Light side, dark side

Adam admits that it's been a challenge to find a balance in his life. Over recent years, his attitude and style have changed. Openness, maturity and his love for Sauli show in the lyrics on his new album, Trespassing.

- I invite listeners to trespass into my life, I open up about both the light and the dark side of myself. Success has maximized my scale of emotion. The good times are amazing, the bad times are really dark.

Being judged, ignored and treated unfairly are experiences familiar to Adam.

- I'm different, I'm an outsider, and not everyone accepts me because of that. When I'm down, I'm a self-destructive worrier who overanalyzes things. At those times, I'm critical and hard on myself.

Usually, Adam is a nice guy.

- I'm also a romantic, that's my light side. I've written songs about love – about finding the right one, which has now happened to me.

Sometimes Adam feels like he can't live without his other half.

- He keeps me grounded, even when I'm flying too high. Sometimes it seems like he knows me better than I know myself.
