Sometime tonight (December 28th) or tomorrow morning (December 29th), idolforums.com will be unavailable for approximately 2 hours. We are making preparations for the expected increase in traffic for American Idol 4 and we will be moving to a 2-server Dual Xeon (both) setup.
Our internet provider will be connecting an additional server which will require some downtime. The website may also be periodically unavailable while we configure the new web server. Once all of this is complete, we should be able to further minimize random slowness on IDF and everyone should see improved speeds. We will make another announcement when normal operation can be expected and when we finish configuring the new server. Our target is to have everything completed before the new year.  Anyway, almost all IDF services have been migrated to the new server. We will continue to monitor IDF and make necessary performance tweaks. With the new hardware, we should be able to comfortably support over 1,500+ active users with negligible performance impact. For those with some technical background and interested in what happened, here's some info. We used to run apache (web server) and mysql (database server) on the same computer (dual xeon 2.8 w/2gb ram). We've now spread that onto 2 servers: web server (ice.neurox.net) now runs on a dual xeon 2.8 w/2gb ram + 2x160gb harddrives, and the database server (alpha.neurox.net) still runs on the original server except that one is now database only and runs on a dual xeon 2.8 w/2gb ram + 3x73gb scsi's. --------------------
