Singer/songwriter Adam Lambert, who rose from the American Idol to an international star, is a busy bee at the moment. He is traveling around the world promoting his soon-to-be-released new album, and next summer he will front the legendary band Queen as their lead singer in one show. However, people here (Finland) are interested in Lambert not only because of his singing talent but also because of his Finnish boyfriend. 45 minuuttia (45 minutes) met the star in Stockholm.

The 30-years-old singer and songwriter Adam Lambert participated in the American Idol song contest in 2009 and immediately impressed the judges with his singing talent and his confidence in performing. His career in musical theater that started at the age of 10 served him well while he was competing in that most popular TV program in the USA, in front of over 30 million spectators.

Adam: I think just knowing the business , and kind of being in the entertainment industry from that perspective and having auditioned a lot and been hired and been employed as a performer I think it was very beneficial for my experience in Idol because I wasn’t an amateur.

Even though Lambert, who was the favorite in the show, ended up as the runner-up, his career got a major boost from the American Idol. Lambert’s first record sold over 1 million copies worldwide and its’ biggest hit earned him a Grammy nomination.

Currently Lambert is traveling around the world promoting his second album called Trespassing, which will be released this spring. In his first record Lambert wanted to dive into his rock star fantasies but now he wants to tell about his own life.

Adam: With Trespassing I think that it’s more honest and it’s more autobiographical. It’s definitely more of like me. I want people to get to know me better, but hopefully in getting to know me better they get to know themselves better.

After the American Idol Lambert confirmed publicly that he was gay – a thing that he himself had always been comfortable with.

Adam: At 27 after coming off of Idol all of a sudden everybody wanted to talk about it. And all of the sudden I was faced with all these countering opinions to it. And all of a sudden for the first time in my life I was dealing with people that were not okay with it. So, it was a bit of a hurdle to overcome.

Adam Lambert is dating Finnish Sauli Koskinen who rose into publicity after winning the Big Brother reality-TV show in 2007. The couple, living in Los Angeles, goes around openly together and they are favorite targets of the paparazzi.

Adam: It’s obviously a little bit overwhelming sometimes and it can be a little like… uncomfortable but it comes with the territory you know, and we… And that’s the life, you know, and it’s … you have to accept it.

Last Christmas Lambert and Koskinen made some unwanted headlines after having a drunken scuffle between themselves in a restaurant in Helsinki and both ending in lock-up. The men publicly told that they had made a New Year’s resolution about a healthier life style.

Adam: It’s great. It’s harder to eat healthier though, I’ve been trying … I’ve been going… like traveling about last couple of weeks and … it’s hard to find lettuce, like dark green lettuce and it’s hard to find health food when you are like in the middle of Germany. Like it’s very much cheese and meat and bread kind of a country.

Lambert’s Finnish boyfriend has been the source of inspiration also in the song called Broken English on the new record.

Adam: The song is basically about language barriers and spoken word in general . Also some of it is based on my personal experience with having a partner who doesn’t speak the same language as you but it kind of transcends it, it’s just about communication in general. It’s about how sometimes it’s not about words , sometimes it’s about eye contact or body language, sometimes it’s about the type of communication that’s beyond spoken word.
Ripsa: How about your Finnish nowadays?
Adam: My Finnish is not so strong. Not so good Finnish.
Ripsa: How many words it includes..?
Adam: Probably less than ten.

Adam Lambert has wanted to make good use of his publicity also in charity work.

Adam: I definitely think it’s a great opportunity like to use celebrity as, like, as a way to redirect people’s financial energy you know, I think. Charity: Water for example is the one that I’m working with now , last year on my birthday we raised over 300 000 dollars to build freshwater wells in these underprivileged areas.

Lambert has also felt it important to support the music and arts teaching in the American schools.

Adam: At least in the States the arts programs are some of the first programs to get cut when people are… like when they are doing the budget cuts in public schools. And… if it weren’t for the arts I would have been lost. I wouldn’t have had any sort of social outlet, I wouldn’t have wanted to be in school. You know, if you are making the students to take physical education you should be letting them take music as well.

In addition to the soon-to-be-released new album, another one of Adam Lambert’s musical dreams will come true in the summer when he will take the stage at the Sonisphere festival in England as the singer for the legendary band Queen. Lambert got to perform with the band for the first time already in the American Idol.

Adam: It’s been awesome, I’m so excited… that they like me. That’s great! I mean, I love music of Queen. Freddie Mercury was a huge hero of mine. His songwriting was amazing, his voice, his stage presence… I’m very inspired by him. So yeah, getting to sing their music is… it’s like a dream come true. It’s really great.

We are looking forward to that with interest.

She's been a fangurl since day one... I remember listening to her and Lou... her cohort in crime... talking about Adam constantly... esp. her. She loves her some Adam!!

And that's where a lot of my frustration is coming in. He's all over the radio in some markets, but so many of us haven't heard him.

Thanks marlock!... It was great to listen to him on my local station... but it would have been better to see him in person in that studio... Oh well.. Happy just to listen!

eh, as much as i love a gushy interviewer, she was just overboard. there's a certain point when you might start just making ppl uncomfortable. and she. wouldn't. stop. i know i'm in the minority here. i just think as a professional over the age of 25, there's a level of composure you should maintain, huge fan or not. but that's just me.

anyway, she wasn't bad... just needed to reel it in a bit.

She is a gushy interviewer.... She's been that way ever since I first listened to her on the radio... She hasn't changed a bit.... Adam just brought out the OT in her!
