America’s Polo Cup & “American Idol” Michael Johns Shine in D.C.
September 23, 2008

The Land Rover America’s Polo Cup hosted the Official Kick Off Preview Rally for a weekend of power plays and players for guests both at the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City VIP reception on Friday evening and an unprecedented sold out Polo match held on the DC National Mall. Amidst the challenges in sports, music and fashion - president and founders Tareq & Michaele Salahi stated that Australia is already preparing to challenge the United States for the World Cup taking place at the Capitol Polo grounds in Potomac , Maryland on May 9, 2009.

Following the announcements from Tareq Salahi – he introduced His Excellency Dennis Richardson, Australian ambassador to the U.S. who took the stage and expressed his excitement for the U.S. & Australia Challenge for the prestigious Land Rover America ’s Polo Cup.

Saturday began with a stunning version of the Australian national anthem being performed by American Idol star Michael Johns with the Washington Monument as a backdrop and eight horses galloping across the polo field carrying Australian flags. Sgt. Antonio Giullano, U.S. Army Chorus Soloist then performed the U.S. national anthem followed by God Bless America . During the anthems three F-18s performed their ceremonial fly over the DC National Mall polo field. This performance was followed by helicopter fly-bys of the 2009 America’s Cup partners which include the State of Maryland’s governors helicopter – honoring its new home at Capitol Polo Club, Potomac, MD – and U.S. Coast Guard fly bys throughout the day over the polo field.

The USA Cartier polo match featured Michael Johns throwing in the first game ball out of a Range Rover HSE. The U.S. Polo Teams sponsored by Cartier played an aggressive and intense match with the U.S. Cartier White Team winning the preview match 8 to 3. Johns performed three songs to the sold out crowd during halftime. The crowd roared during his performance and Johns confirmed that he will be performing a full concert both at the Land Rover America’s Polo Cup Battle of the Coral Sea Gala on May 8, 2009 and at the Land Rover America’s Polo Cup world Championship on May 9, 2009 in Potomac , Md.

The main feature match started with the game ball thrown in by Miss America ’s Miss D.C. Kate Marie Grinwold throwing in the game ball to the First Chukker polo players. The match was a fast and open game, where First Chukker White Team won the first Ambassador’s Celebrity Cup at the America ’s Polo Cup Kick-Off presented by the Embassy of Australia and the Land Rover America’s Polo Cup. The contest was viewed by polo fans, tourists, horse lovers, and followers of vocalist Johns.

“The Athletes of the Land Rover America’s Polo Cup are incredible and our common denominator in professional sports is working together with an end goal of making differences in peoples lives. I am proud you asked me to say a few words, and look forward to joining you as a guest for the May 9, 2009 Land Rover America ’s Polo Cup,” stated former Dallas Cowboy fullback and current NFL analyst Daryl “Moose” Johnston. Roger Stern, former NFL executive and Commissioner to the National Polo League confirmed that the Season opener game will be held at the Land Rover America’s Polo Cup on May 9, 2009 and will feature the New York Empires versus the Washington Patriots.

The America's Polo Cup World Championships will be held this May, but the party started last Saturday with a kickoff event that celebrated everything Polo.

What: A pre-celebration for the America’s Polo Cup World Championships, which will take place next May at the Capitol Polo Club in Potomac. The match will pit the United States against Australia. Other pre-event festivities include a reception at the Embassy of Australia, a fashion show, and a gala.

Where: The West Potomac Park Polo Grounds, next to the Lincoln Memorial and the Potomac River.

When: Saturday, September 20, 1 PM.

Who: Aside from the US Cartier polo-team players, many boldface names and polo enthusiasts were on hand to support the event. Once it settled into the Cartier VIP tent, the crowd was welcomed with a few words from Australian ambassador Denis Richardson. United States Army Chorus singer Sergeant Antonio Guiliano sang a stirring rendition of the US national anthem. No, not originally. But now that you mentioned it, yes that also. The other reason is that I don't like the image this word implies. You know, defining and restricting Michael's fan base.

I don't know how defining it was since they weren't mentioned by name. My guess is, by the time he was finished, most everyone there became followers too!

Maybe I'm over analyzing. But there are many other words that could've been used instead without giving that impression. It's a weired word to be used here. But again JMO.

Maybe it's only because we weren't listed somewhere, but they weren't listed by name either. If they'd used the word fans, it might have seemed more appropriate, but someone would have associated that with MJO too. I think we're maybe just a little sensitive because we don't feel recognized.

That was the writer's mistake I'm sure. I don't think anyone would be quoted as saying "We're Michael Johns followers."

Song Appearances and Covers
Other than the cover by Billy Idol, the song was also covered by the group Empathy on their 1994 album Under the Lost Smile. American Idol contestant Michael Johns also performed the song, and got good reviews. The song was covered this year by the band New Found Glory for a J.C.Penney back-to-school commercial. The song has also appeared on many video games, such as SingStar 80's and Brooktown High.

I'd rather everyone add Skype so we could just chat online. This small text is a pain in my backside. Mine doesn't work on the first try, so I have to edit the size on each one.
