The NGH Report – American Idol 11’s Houston Auditions: “I want to show you my iconic moves!”

It’s Houston! So, we all knew it was coming, SPACE THEME! Who else called it? We opened with an astronaut, floating in space, introducing us to this episode of American Idol. Do I have to be the one to flip out about this? Ahem… this is what we’re paying NASA to do in space now?! In outer-@#$%ing-space?!! NASA; knock knock. Go to Mars already. Build a base on the moon. Find a radio frequency from an alien race. Do something interesting! If you have enough time to introduce a segment on American Idol than we need to find someone else to do your job!

Well, the last two episodes haven’t been the greatest, so I was relieved to have enjoyed the Houston auditions. I actually saw a couple of people I think could make it far and one girl who might be able to actually win this thing. Let’s talk about them…

Here we go!

Day One

Skylar Laine
- 17 years old
- MS
- She sang “Hell on Heels.”
- “Now it’s time to get changed… and go kill a deer.”
- Serious country girl alert. Not fake country girl like Kellie Pickler… I’m talking like a serious country girl. Skylar most likely brews moonshine in her uncle’s barn and has a passionate dislike towards “city folk.”
- She has some potential. I could see Skylar’s personality and comfortable country voice taking her a long way in this competition.
- 8/10

Baylie Brown
- 21 years old
- TN
- She sang “Bed of Roses”
- Baylie was a million times better than Season 6. You see? Waiting pays off! Baylie of Season 6 was useless and never would have made it further than the semi-finals. Baylie of Season 11? An actual contender for the title.
- In other words, she just murdered her Season 6 audition.
- 9/10

Kristine Osorio
- 28 years old
- TX
- “Instead of paying my divorce lawyer I bought a plane ticket to go to American Idol.” Yeah, seems like a wise decision for a single mom with three kids.
- She had a strong, soulful voice, but tended to shout at times.
- 8.5/10

Linda Williams
- 24 years old
- TX
- She sang “Fallin’”
- That was terrible. Jennifer Lopez was right. This was an interesting disconnect. Randy and Steven were throwing away some talented contestants, and then they kept Linda Williams who was sharp right out of the gate. Sad.
- 6/10

Day Two

Cortez Shaw
- 20 years old
- TX
- He sang “Someone Like You.”
- Typical poor back story. How many homeless people are on American Idol? Was there an option between living in a shelter or trying out for Idol? Why is the homeless community so musically proficient?
- Likeable guy. Great name. Strong voice.
- 8/10

Ramiro Garcia
- 28 years old
- TX
- He sang “Amazing Grace.”
- No ears! He was born without ears and the doctor’s said he have some tough times ahead. Guess what? He overcame it! Who had money on a happy ending? Oh, what’s that? Everyone? Right.
- 8/10

55 singers made it through to Hollywood! See you next week as we watch the Portland auditions!

Linda Williams
- That was terrible.
- 6/10

No offense, as I appreciate your opinions in your reviews, but you need to seriously remaster your ratings rules. By cutting 1 through 6 out of the equation and grading everyone on a 6 to 10 scale, you made it extremely hard to gauge the true value of a contestant's performance. Calling someone terrible and then giving them a 6 does not compute for me at all, I'd expect to give them a 1 or 2 or 3 out of 10.

yeah NGH's rating scale is just way to generous esp compared to the comments.

I don't know if Baylie can win (Girl Idol) but she has potential that's for sure.

I think the rating scale makes sense if you look at it the way a teacher grades papers. 60% (or 6/10) is considered an F. tongue.gif

Ah ok that works. And since he isn't reviewing the non golden ticket holders he doesn't give out F's whether they were almost a D or keep you back a grade.

Yeah, but we're grading singers here. If you give that awful singer Linda a 6/10, I mean the increment level puts a great performance as like a 16/10. It's way easier to gauge talent when you don't automatically rank someone that can sing a couple notes in tune as a 7.

^ I agree. We need a broader range. 4-6 are people I would consider given a few years they may be able to make it far. But right now they shouldn't make it to Lives. Maybe HW so they can gain experience though.

I think it's hilarious that yall are getting worked up about a pointless "ratings system."

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Once we hit the live rounds I don't even use a numbers ratings system.

This SO much. Baylie proved in full force tonight why the age limit should be no lower than 18. Yeah we've gotten a FEW under 18 gems, but when you consider the number we've found that are actually ready at that age in 10 seasons, the ratio is way off.

Someone that young just simply hasn't even had their voice mature yet, regardless of experience. Baylie was great at 16. At 21, her voice is so much stronger and she's gotten so much more control over it.

I agree Josh. I mean Archie and Allison and Diana were true gems. But so many others weren't. Even Lauren would be better in a couple years. Katie is better now than she was on AI. Carmen post is way better.

And I feel that with Allison esp, that she needed to be older to gain more respect so her label didn't try the avenue they chose and could go more rocker.

For me, the most important part of an NGH review is the comments right above the rating.

I'm not getting worked up, I just find it odd that you'd give a terrible singer a 6/10. It's a legitimately bizarre rating.

And Jordin Sparks wouldn't have been eligible either (she's the same age as Baylie) and Blake Lewis might have won Season 6. Meaning a male winner six years in a row, rather than just four. Back to back Taylor/Blake wins would have been pretty damaging for the image of the show.

Age limit is fine IMO. It's not teen contestants that are ruining the show, it's teen voters.

Yes, because the exception (Jordin) totally proves the rule. haha.gif Also, if Jordin hadn't won, it would have more likely been Melinda, and that would have been awesome. heart.gif

What Tireswing said.

And I didn't say that younger people were ruining the show. The fact is that having them on when they're so young is ruining themselves. They're nowhere near as good as they could be because of the lack of actually growing up and have your voice mature.

I agree. 15 is too young to be on Idol in my opinion and I don't see why Idol lowered the age limit last year. These kids just aren't ready vocally yet. One example this season is Eben, whose voice sounds like it hasn't even changed yet.
