Does anyone know the phrase used to describe the case when a patient who believes that his or her condition is improving only because he or she is actively treating it and therefore, expecting to feel better?
Say I have a cold. My friend tells me drinking tea will make me feel better, so I do it. After I drink it, my head will probably expect my body to feel better and may erroneously think it does. That's not a great example. I've also heard the phrase used in a discussion about treating concussions with remedies outside of mainstream medicine (in other words, pseudosciences that trick people in believing they're getting better.) Does anyone know the term doctors use for this? I heard it on the radio and can't remember it. -------------------- Got so much money I don't need smarts, my records are flyin' to the top of the charts

Thanks for the replies. Definitely wasn't placebo. I'm 95% sure it was longer than one word. It may have had "self" in it.

It's not faith healing, is it?
I'm trying to think of a term opposite of somatization (idk if there's such a thing) but nothing comes to mind -------------------- ![]() |

Are you looking for the term "self-healing?" That's a term to describe the placebo effect. --------------------

Well the placebo effect is definitely the term for what you described. Are you looking for the term "self-healing?" That's a term to describe the placebo effect. It sounds like it's perfectly synonymous with placebo effect. That just isn't the term this doctor used. He used a two- or three-word phrase and then explained it; it may have been different in some way to a placebo effect or perhaps just different vocabulary. Oh well. I'm trying to find audio from the interview now just because it's bugging me. -------------------- Got so much money I don't need smarts, my records are flyin' to the top of the charts

It sounds simlair to Psychosomatic, which is like the influence the mind has over the body. Like a person may think they are really ill, then over time if they think that, than they could become ill.

Could it possibly be the "self-monitoring" effect? You're paying attention to the action and therefore you're more likely to see an improvement in that behaviour therefore you feel like you're making progress in getting better, when in reality you see a difference because you're paying attention/wanting it to work.
