  1. Yes, signing players long term and then having Sutter fight with them, was not a recipe for success. Why did the owners think that paying for Sutter is OK, but an arena is too hard? I honestly think Sutter was being more passive aggressive than usual, maybe because he didn't get along with the GM? Ha. The new arena the city was persuaded to mostly pay for. Calgarians were not thrilled with the way the costs went way up and the amount the Flames owners pay went down. It's a bigger deal than the one they thought was too expensive. Trolling the Leafs was too easy. Meanwhile. Tkachuk, being incredible for the Panthers in the play offs, when he definitely didn't do that for the Flames. Nice. Flames lost to the Oilers in 5 games in 2022. He scored three times in the first game, which Flames won 9-6 after twice blowing their lead. But the top players Gaudreau, Lindholm and Tkachuk had 14 points against the Oilers. They blew 2 two goal leads in following games. (not to mention Markstrom playing .852!) After a strong regular season they folded. Arizona Coyotes aren't getting an arena. At this point it is becoming weird. I think he'll just sit on the farm, counting his money. Flames are supposedly down to a final four for GM, including former player Craig Conroy. Which reminds me, when the AHL team was still in the playoffs, Jerome Iginla was in the Saddledome watching a game. Aw. Iggy in the Dome.
  2. WELL. First the Flames didn't make the playoffs, despite signing two big name players. In the last game vs Sharks they won while letting some of the young players have a chance. Awkward interviews with some of the long time players like Backlund, who implied they didn't want to come back. Then the GM Treliving didn't sign a new contract and instead left, with the distinct implication that he didn't get along with the coach Darryl Sutter. Darryl had a two year extension for 8 million dollars in his pocket. Because owners really like Sutter. So then everyone was like, if the GM has left, does the new GM have to keep Sutter? And the new long term no move players Huberdeau and Kadri don't get along with Sutter. Huberdeau's agent was criticizing Sutter on twitter half the season, and Kadri was sulking. And they are big contracts here for years, and this is only year one! And Sutter doesn't want to play the young up and coming people who added a lot of enthusiasm, which also meant no one could tell the value of them either, which was a major problem for the GM. So I'm like, is my team doomed now? Today they let Darryl Sutter go! While I don't credit him for the entire bad season, it really didn't help that no one seemed inspired to play under his incredibly grumpy coaching. I mean Zadorov had a hat trick in the last game, and Sutter didn't show any pleasure. In press conferences he was surprisingly arrogant, not just terse. Interim GM says stuff today about coaching today's players...ow. So the Calgary Flames have no GM, and no coach. I missed the last Leaf game but that is some kind of weirdness. They are actually going to round 2? Witchcraft! I watched an afternoon game on TV with Winnipeg and Vegas, which was really good but Winnipeg lost in OT, and never ever got back in the series. I've listened to a few games on the radio. I can't support Oilers (local rivalry) and I won't support Leafs (centre of the Canadian hockey universe), even though it is nice to see ex-Captain of the Flames Mark Giordano getting to the second round. Lots of ex-Flames in the playoffs.
  3. Waaa. Well the Chicago game disgusted me and could Kadri give the puck away more? Then they win vs the Jets 3-1 which is just weird. Then of course they lose in OT to the Canucks. I think they're done, but it isn't official yet. I want Sutter to go back to the farm. He is so rude in press conferences. I think the two big players we got probably hate him. He also hates playing younger players. Some of the line combinations are seriously odd. Ownership was probably expecting a playoff run. Oh well. That's what happens when you try and relive 2004. They still managed to beat the Flames, so there's that. And you've got Pettersson. Flames play Nashville next. The eternal truth. I actually could open my window yesterday and not freeze to death. Naturally the weather is going colder for the week...hmm.
  4. I've been riding the Calgary Flames virtual rollercoaster. Someone today described them as the Katy Perry song Hot N Cold, because they are super contradictory. Have trouble with Anaheim Ducks and Arizona, but beat Ottawa which was tired from the time change, and then beat Vegas an astonishing 7-2. Then lose in OT, AGAIN, to Dallas after a start where they were down two goals after 1 minute 58 seconds. The number of games that end with a one goal loss in overtime is ridiculous. The number of times other teams score in the first minute is ridiculous. The Flames hit the post a lot. Their best players are ice cold. And Markstrom was terrible until his child was born, and then suddenly it is like he is almost himself again. The Flames like to sink to the level of the bad teams, but beat the good teams. 77 points, same as Florida. Someone said Vancouver is paying three coaches now, one current and two past. That isn't the cheapest way to do it... Any time is fine. I am sorry to hear about the virus. I was trying not to let the Flames get to me, but it is at this point just like watching some kind of weird movie and you want to know how it ends. I'm thinking we might miss the playoffs by like, one point. I can see it now! The Calgary Flames brought to you by Calaway Park! (the local amusement park) Maybe we could get a picture of a ride straight on the jersey. Playing LA Kings next. Apparently the New York Rangers have never had a mascot. I never noticed this. How did they escape? The Kraken don't have one yet, but they are new. Ooo. The Flames were the first NHL team to have a mascot! I did not know that. It's our fault!
  5. In the last game vs the Kraken, I didn't realize Tanev's brother is on the Kraken team, and the commentator didn't mention it, so at one point Tanev was everywhere, but it wasn't the same one...LOL. Tanev shoots on Markstrom...um...hmm. Well from some of them. He also got booed a lot every time he had the puck. Monahan was the one that got unconditional love! We steal everything from the Canucks! Last game Sutter had to call a time out because Flames were being over run by the Kraken (unleash the...nevermind) and was described as having a face the colour of the red Flames jersey. But they did win, so it kind of worked. Since there are ads everywhere, I don't think it cut down on them. My signal often has been pixellating, I had no time to look at the ads! Go team! Aw. I have faith in Huberdeau. He moved from cozy warm Florida to wind chill of -45 Celsius (before it finally warmed up), so I'm cutting him a break on this one. He did score the winning goal last time. And then Lucic hit him in the nose when they celebrated and made it bleed. Sigh. Flames have hit so many many posts. It is getting ridiculous. Markstrom was shaky but I think he's coming out of it. All our best players stopped producing goals for ages, it's kind of weird. Merry Christmas! And Happy New Year everyone!
  6. Flames are going to play Vancouver tonight. Last game poor Tanev took a puck in the head, but seems OK, which is a relief because that was serious. Flames new habit: taking penalties especially ones in over time. Why? I don't know. Last game a 4 minute penalty for high sticking in OT. The game before that, a penalty in the first 3 seconds of OT (after a 3rd period involving a 4 minute penalty, followed by our goaltender getting one). Our goalie Markstrom has improved and the whole team is now playing worse! Um...hmm. I don't know. GM is making Sutter play younger players.
  7. I was really shocked when I saw the news. He always seemed to have such a cheerful outlook. I feel very badly for his family, especially having it happen so close to Christmas. On SYTYCD I don't think there was ever anyone who didn't like him. It's really horrifying.
  8. Calgary is all weather, LOL. It was super cold, then two days of OK, then more cold and it's snowing. Calgary won over Capitals, who have tons of injured players and we took out another player and their goaltender... Won vs Arizona after a shaky start. Tanev is crazy! In a good way. Our team is terrible without him. Markstrom had a mental moment in the Montreal game 13 seconds in and decided to throw himself at the puck, but the freshly smoothed ice meant he slid too far, and missed the puck, which then went in our net. After the game said "I suck at hockey" which is never a good sign. That was Montreal visiting, and Sean Monahan got a standing ovation since it was the first time since being traded away and it was really sweet, because after the game when someone asked if that chapter was closed (something Tkachuk always says), Monahan said it would never be closed because he has a special feeling about Calgary. Aw. And he was really emotional about it. He's had so much surgery for a young guy. I really don't know why. But the Flames have been wearing their black horse jerseys (Blasty), and then in the reverse retro Pedestal ones which are also black. I used to really like the strange black Thrasher jerseys, in all their slightly unsightly glory. Actually it was the actual signal where sometimes it would freeze, or totally pixelate, like the satellite was having issues. At the time there was no active weather. It was like that two or three games in a row. Awful! I've seen the digital ads, which I always think are stupid. I watched Canada's games. I mean, I've never got to do that before! I liked their scrappiness against Belgium, and I wished they'd scored in that game. My fall back team in the past was usually Germany, with England as my first choice. Added time can break your heart, people...
  9. There are still random players I miss, like Byron who left on waivers a few years ago. For enforcement Flames have Big Z (Zadorov) who is 6 ft 6! And Lucic. I have to say I am liking the time difference, because I don't always have to get up at 5 am. I'm back into it now. England made it through, yay! Ooo Germany, that wasn't good. Yay Messi! He's still got it. Still weird though. Soccer at Christmas! And it is -22 degrees Celsius.
  10. For a while Calgary just lost and lost, and lost! 7 games in a row, despite going on the road. Here's the thing. If Tanev gets injured, our whole team tanks. Then he came back. Won over Winnipeg and LA Kings at home. Lost miserably to Tampa on the road. We won against Florida in the shootout on Saturday, which was sweet, especially when Markstrom saved Tkachuk's shot and then held up his glove to show everyone in a hilarious way. Tkachuk didn't re-sign with Calgary and keeps telling everyone how warm Florida is and how he goes to work in his flip flops so revenge is sweet. Huberdeau scored in the shootout. It was sweet how Florida fans had signs in the warmup for Huberdeau and Weegar who were unexpectedly traded to Calgary. How weird are the Florida 3rd retro jerseys? I can't decide if I like them or if they are wicked tacky. Then Flames squeaked a win over the Flyers. The Flyers are missing tons of people, I think 1 defence and 5 forwards? And we still almost gave it away to them. The score 5-2 does not show how close it was. Lately when I watch them on TV the whole signal keeps pixellating. It's not usually this bad. People go in for a check and freeze, and sometimes the team on the rush actually evaporates. Not good. I can't seem to pivot to soccer, either. For me it is not a November thing!
  11. It took a while for me to get my voice back. Last week I sounded like a character from Nightmare Before Christmas...LOL. Someone else in the family who lives in a different city has it now. Not my fault. SNOW. Snow snow snow. I can't believe how fast Calgary got heavy snow. It looks like February out there now. There is a huge snow shelf outside my window hanging off the roof. Next week it is super cold too, and more snow. Yay! Emphasis on sometimes. Calgary has lost to the Oilers, and then the Kraken. Sutter told Huberdeau to be faster. Next up Nashville. Canucks might go on a run, you never know. Calgary narrowly escaped being completely irrelevant this season. I'm not sure about what Vancouver could do to turn it around, but it's not impossible. I see Ottawa is for sale now. Soap opera of yesteryear. Mostly I listen to it on the radio. A bit inconvenient when occasionally Derek the commentator forgets to commentate, so sometimes there is just a weird silence! I am tired of the gambling push. I keep meaning to complain about it. I see now there are ads asking people to be responsible. If you're addicted to gambling, you're unable to set limits. I think it is irresponsible for them to advertise it so much. Even on the radio they are always talking about odds. Give it up already!
  12. Apparently they agreed because they cut him loose. We'll see how they feel when he visits. He seems to be scoring for his new team. Gaudreau didn't for like, three games, but now he is. He's always dreamed of playing in Columbus... That was the first opening season game the Flames have won in 13 years! And beat Colorado 5-3 (though Colorado was on a back to back game and had stayed up all night celebrating getting their cup rings/slogging to the airport in the small hours, but a win is a win). Then Flames beat the Oilers 4-3 (excellent) and Vegas 3-2 (bit more difficult). Then Buffalo beat the Flames 6-3, as Flames were not playing very well and the Sabres are bouncing back from their time in the abyss. Flames signed goalie Vladar to a 2 yr extension. Someone in my family took a brief holiday and brought back some Covid. And I caught it despite all my precautions. But it was a fairly mild case, so I'm glad for that, and glad the aches have finally gone away. Spent ages not getting anything done at all while not being able to go anywhere. Huge snow last night. Not really liking the weird retro pedestal jerseys.
  13. Don't love the new format. There were a lot of non-singers. I actually thought it sounded like Shatner, so I was surprised I actually was right. UK Hedgehog was much cuter. I'm thinking the more elaborate costumes will be the ones they think will get through. I hate having to wait a week for the reveal. I can't remember it that long!
  14. Maybe scramble would have been better later on. Someone said to me that it stops teams working together in alliances, which I am tired of seeing. Liked visiting Germany. No non-eliminations is harsh, but it does up the tension. Amazing Race Canada only just finished, so there is no gap between races.
  15. Is it hockey time yet? The wildfire smoke is gone now and thank goodness because it set off my allergies this year and it was miserable. STUCK THE LANDING! Signed Kadri, which I didn't expect. LOL, maybe it's serious. Because...pizza. Huberdeau has been giving lots of interviews. He said he didn't want everyone asking him if he was going to stay, he just wanted to sign and get on with things. It's going to be super weird because it is the Calgary Flames, and yet, it isn't. Extreme renovation. Apparently Edmonton likes controversy... Hums.... They gave him a tryout agreement. Oh, Mike Smith failed his physical. Juniors won and I didn't watch and I didn't care. That was sad. Oooo. Sutter just cast cold cold shade on Tkachuk. And that's why Sutter is kind of fun, in a deadpan stone cold expression kind of way. Here he has a certain look in his eye, and then "unleash the hounds!" Memo to self: don't ask him the diff between Tkachuk and Toffoli. This could be fun though. Ask him to compare someone else...
