Which is GROSS. His tobacco wad grosses me out more than anyone else, ever. And now that he's on the Yankees, I won't have to see it 18 times this year. Just 3-6 because I don't remember how many games against the Yankees we're playing tbh.

I wouldn't do it myself, but I kind of like the idea of one player in the league doing it.

I'll get to see it 18 times a year now.

With that, it just occurred to me that I may be living in Ontario this summer and working a 9-5 job. I can watch pretty much all Jays games! (The last few summers, I've worked 11:30-8:00, and eastern games start at 4:00 here.)

Cabrera and Fielder seem to be really chummy already. I can get used to them batting back to back.

Maybe it was the way Prince Fielder showed up four days early for spring training.

Or maybe it was the massive home run he hit during batting practice -- a ball that soared at least 450 feet, smashing into the trees high over the rightfield fence, shattering a branch and prompting Miguel Cabrera to scream: "You hit that alligator!"

Or maybe it was the way Fielder hung out in the clubhouse Monday morning and looked so comfortable and relaxed, greeting the players and security guards and equipment guys and minor league catchers and, heck, anybody who walked by.

Or maybe it was the way Fielder and Cabrera seemed to build an instant connection. They were inseparable on their first day together. They played catch together and batted together and stretched together and did sprints together and at one point, after most of the clubhouse had cleared out, they stood arm in arm and took several pictures of each other with their cell phones. Can you imagine that Facebook update?

Fielder took a wrong turn, stopped, turned around and then approached the gate. "What's your name?" Fielder asked a security guard, shaking his hand.

I love hearing stuff like this.

Cabrera rushed to Fielder. "What's up?" Cabrera screamed.

Cabrera eagerly gave high fives to Fielder's sons.

"What's up?"

High five.

"Look who we got!" Cabrera screamed to a crowd of fans behind a fence. "Look!"

Where guys like Darryl Strawberry would be very moody, the youthful enthusiasm of The Kid would shine through his smile and through how hard he played every game, from the first pitch to the final out.

The way he fought cancer was reflective of the way he played The Game; he fought cancer to his last breath.

You might have passed on, but you live on through the legacy you have left behind. RIP Gary Carter, and Thank You for bringing a World Series Title to Queens.

JP Arencibia gets a tougher go than most baseball players in Toronto do. On the radio, Bob McCown says he needs to eclipse what he did last year (his rookie year, for crying out loud) offensively and continue to improve defensively to avoid being traded. We have a catching stud in AAA, but still. Tough crowd.

Most of the active "managing legends" retired the last two seasons. Joe Torre, Lou Pinella, Bobby Cox, and Cito Gaston (not widely appreciated in the U.S. but, with two World Series rings as Blue Jays manager, a baseball legend in Canada) all called it quits last year. It felt like TLR's and Terry Francona's retirement this year pretty much ended that wave of great managers, even though Francona probably went before his time.

Whom do people consider the best active managers? I'd say Mike Scioscia, Charlie Manuel, Joe Maddon, Ron Gardenhire, and Jim Leyland. All but Manuel and Leyland should be around a while. I also liked Bruce Bochy's "the hottest guys going right now bat--period" approach during the Giants' 2011 World Series win. You'd think that would be the rational way to coach in every sport, but it's not.

Sosa would have played under Lefevbre, Trebelhorn, Riggleman, Baylor, Lachemann, Kimm, and Baker. Just looking at that list, wow, the Cubs get around.

Yeah, those were just the Cubs managers between 1992-2004. He just missed out on Don Zimmer.

I don't think anyone will ever parallel Lou Piniella for outbursts and ejections. I remember when he took away first base and threw it in the dugout as Mariners manager. I don't know much about Dusty Baker, but I just remember him from the big Cardinals/Reds outburst last year or the year before.

Well, they're off to a good start. It's insane he'll cost the owner more than the franchise purchase did.

Favorite manager right now is Joe Maddon. Love his approach to the game and how successful he's made the Rays. Definitely agree with the rest of your list too, Rowan. Leyland, Scioscia, Gardenhire are all fantastic and I wish any of them were the Braves' manager. The only one I'm iffy on is Manuel because I'm biased and he's the Phillies manager and groce.

I don't like our manager.

Finally saw Moneyball! Loved it.

OH AND MY FAVORITE DUSTY BAKER AS A MANAGER MEMORY OF LATE is that marathon Reds/Phillies game last year that went to like 16 innings? I don't even remember but Charlie Manuel had WILSON VALDEZ pitching and Dusty Baker pulled some stupid shit and the Reds still lost. It was hilarious.
