It's a lot more complex than that. Generally, labor rights are considered progressive, and the Democrat were really always strong there - that was their base. It's why MLK, Jr. always supported Democrats (he was not a Republican). The parties never really 'switched', but what was liberal and what was conservative changed. It was the issues that changed their perceptions, less so the parties. The Democratic Party has always been more so the people's/workers party. The people and workers haven't always been the most receptive to people of color. You still see bits of it in our party today as the Labor wing is very hostile to immigration issues. Its kind of what has prevented the party from moving forward on those issues. ![]() This is what the electoral map would have looked like if only white people voted.
