Smith shows promise with new music
By Kevin C. Johnson

We all formed opinions of Nikko Smith watching him on "American Idol" last year, and saw that he was a good singer and performer with something better inside, waiting to burst out.

Now we know what that thing is. During an invitation-only listening session recently at Dante's, Smith premiered songs slated to appear on his upcoming CD, and the verdict on his new material is a thumbs-up. The songs were better than one might've hoped for, and Smith often displayed a strong falsetto.

Smith introduced each track, beginning the preview with "Work It (1982)," the best of the bunch. The upbeat song, which sounds like an instant hit, is Michael Jackson-inspired, he admitted. It also has splashes reminiscent of Justin Timberlake's "Like I Love You," a song Smith has been known to perform. Other songs included "Getcha," which has been heard locally a bit; the ballad "Alone"; and "Anywhere," which sounded a bit like Ginuwine. "Wonderland" featured the recognizable instrumental stylings of Ernie Isley, who was in the house along with Smith's parents, Ozzie and Denise Smith.

Most of the tracks were produced by the heavy hand of NekJerka of Unimind Music Group. Jayson "Koko" Bridges of Basement Beats produced the busy "Exotic," which featured rising rapper Gena. Several songs also featured Kane, one of Smith's writers. Advertisement

Smith performs Aug. 4 at Finale Music & Dining. Next month he travels to New York to showcase for record labels. Smith previously said he'd release his CD via his own N Music Group, but apparently is having a change of mind. "I'd been staying away from them until now," says Smith, who figured now was the time to pursue big labels so he can "put St. Louis R&B on the map."
