'American Idol': Adam Lambert is a Good Man, Charlie Brown

You mentioned that you've been doing musical theatre all your life. What is your first role when you knew that you wanted to do this.
I actually was cast in a production of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown when I was 10. I played the role of Linus with the blanket... I got to sing... I don't remember the song! [laughs]

Simon had a mixed review for your performance the other night. How do you respond to that critique?
Well, I responded on-air and I guess that's kind of music in general. You either love it or you don't love it. Obviously, I'm a risk-taker and I'm not easy listening. I'm not going to always be the most digestible thing across the board. I like to blow it out da box and either you like it or you don't.

Are you going to stick to that or take into consideration what the judges say?
Of course I take what they say and I listen. They're professionals. It's important to find a balance between what you want to do and what the judges say and what the audience wants. I'm not planning on wailing at the top of my lungs every week. The audience would grow tired of that. I want to change it up week to week.

We've seen quite a lot of you on screen, how much has that helped you?
Of course that's helped. It's exposed me to people more and more and they feel like they know me and get to hear me talk and hear my opinions. I'm really, really thankful to the producers for featuring me in such a way.

How much do you think a story like Danny's makes a difference?
I think it does make a difference. The audience can empathize with that person and they can relate to you singing a song that means a lot to you. That really evokes quite a reaction from the audience.

You voice and style is really different from what we've seen on the show. Is that something you can use to your advantage?
I've been watching the show for years and I haven't really seen anybody that I could compare myself to. I do have an advantage because it's something different. The more individual we all are, the more chance we have at garnering a fanbase.

Is there any one song that you'd be terrified to attempt?
I'm kind of competitive and I like challenges so I don't think range-wise there's anything I'd be scared to attempt. There are maybe certain styles I'd want to stay way from. Country week would be a slight stretch for me, but I like all types of music and would try to sing all types of music.

Whose musical career would you want to emulate?
I think David Bowie is amazing. Vocally, we're very different but the choices he's made and risks he's taken is a great model for me.

You have such a strong YouTube presence already, how much is the internet going to help you?
I think any exposure is good exposure. Of course it's been helpful because it allows viewers to see me do various songs and take on various styles. I can see how that'd be an advantage.

Do you read the comments that people say about you on the internet?
I try not to dwell on it too much but I have seen things here or there and it does help. I don't take it personally, good or bad. I try to remain objective. It's like market research, it helps you find out what the fans think.

He's very honest and aware of what others are thinking of him. Very interesting interview, imo.

Range-wise no one can even touch him, so he's right about being confident about that. He's going to be just fine during country week. It might not be his style, but it's not extremely challenging either. If he gets used to it, he'll do good. yes.gif

here's another version of this same interview:

http://blogs.ajc.com/american-idol-blog/20...n-adam-lambert/

on getting the pimp spot:

"I was honored. I knew closing the show meant I’d be fresh in people’s minds when they voted. I was really really happy.”

His sound: “I’m not going for a Broadway sound. This is finally allowing me to be myself. I don’t listen to showtunes in my spare time. Musical theater was the way I was paying the bills. We have to have a job, right? I get to sing the music now I like to listen to.”

2/27: Press conference with Allison Iraheta, Kris Allen & Adam Lambert

---------------------------------------------

That answer is really interesting... I hope general discussion reads this and stops the hating.

Oh, sadly you know they won't.

Personally, I find this interesting, and I'm now even more excited to listen to his future performances. "Satisfaction" is a good indication of that, I think. And since I loved it, I know for sure I can expect great stuff from him from now on. yes.gif

Adam doesn't want a Broadway week, tyvm.

: Are you hoping "Idol" does a Broadway theme week this year?

A: No, I hope they don't. Not because I have anything against it, I just don't see myself doing that as a recording artist in that way.

If they have a Broadway week, he'll do really good, because he's been doing that for awhile, so of course he'll have the edge. But then people (haters) might say "oh, he's much better off doing Broadway", which is not what he wants. He wants to be a recording artist.
