'IDOL' WORSHIP

Mohegan Sun is kicking off "Live Idols," featuring former "American Idol" contestants on some Tuesdays.

"Live Idols" will go on for about half an hour at 7 p.m. on the concourse serving The Shops at Mohegan Sun, followed by an autograph session. Ace Young from season five appears on July 15. On Aug. 5, it's Sanjaya.

Mohegan Sun, along with The Shops at Mohegan Sun and Spin Street, usher in a brand new and exciting series.

Mohegan Sun’s Live Idols series brings former American Idols center stage for live appearances in The Shops at Mohegan Sun concourse. Guests enjoy a few song selections performed live, a merchandise signing, and the chance to meet their favorite Idols. The events are free. Live Idol's merchandise for signing is available for sale at Spin Street leading up to and on the day of the event.

OK ... “American Idol” season six. Go.

Jordin Sparks. Crying girl. Umm ... umm ... oh yeah, Sanjaya.

Sanjaya Malakar, the immensly popular contestant who made the top 10 but met his fate despite his boyish charm and crazy hair, is coming to Mohegan Sun Tuesday night for a special “Live Idols” event. He’ll sing, sign autographs and mingle with his adoring fans.

Sanjaya, 18, took some time to speak about his career, his future and his family.

What are you up to now?

Sanjaya: “Mainly I’ve been focusing on my album, working in New York with a producer. Hopefully that’ll be completed soon, between the end of the year and beginning of next year.”

What’s on that album?

“There may be a couple covers but most of it is original material that I’ve written and my sister has written. It has a lot of world influence. I’ve been traveling around with musicians and artsits around the world. We’ve been to Japan and New Zealand and India.”

Still amazed people notice you everywhere?

“It’s incredible. You can’t ask for that kind of exposure — to be able to get that, and that education from “Idol” that comes with it ... it’s an incredible opportunity.”

What are your stories about in “Chicken Soup for the ‘American Idol’ Soul”?

“Basically that I’m just a normal kid that grew up and loved music, and I got this
opportunity and worked toward it, and anyone can do that. ... Putting your personality out there and going for it.”

How influential was your mother during “Idol”?

“My mom was on the show the entire time, so she really was like my rock. She was the only familiar thing that I had that I could go talk to and make sure I was keeping a level head. It’s easy to get caught up in all that, so I felt like it was important for me to have that person.”

And your sister, of course, helped.

“She came on tour, and she’s my guardian. ... I have a very different relationship with my mom than my sister. I could have that younger kind of friend, but she has that motherly instinct in her. She’s kind of the boss.”

What would you like to do along with music?

“I enjoy modeling and I enjoy acting. I’ve auditiond for a lot of Broadway shows. I’m keeping a broad perspective, finding opportunities and seeing who I meet. It’s really fun watching everything come together.”

CakeFan, there are whispers about him doing a tour of sorts, so don't fret. Dunno whether it's promoting A Guy Like Me or just road-testing the rest of the new stuff, but there will be appearances at any rate. You'll get to see him soon, hopefully.
