This. In the UK X Factor is so big that the winner can have the coronation single debut at #1 just based on 1 performance and the hype around the show. In the USA, that's impossible. Also, releasing a cover as a single is not as acceptable in the US as it is in the UK. And what are the chances TPTB could find a great, original song that would fit all three finalists? Small. So, "Listen" is Melanie's winner's song, but it's not a single. Easy find 3 different original songs. -------------------- AI Forever: Kelly Clay Diana Carrie Kat Melinda Syesha Allison Crystal Haley Jessica

Listen is copywrited I think so no... that would hurt her if her first album is all covers I want different songs for her,,, maybe Chris can write her lead single? All songs are copywrited by publishers. Performing rights organizations such as Ascap or BMI collect the royalties. Anyone can record and release any published song as long as they pay royalties and do not change the lyrics. I believe there are certain small changes that are allowed without permission but any altering the meaning of the lyrics would have to be cleared. Jordin's first album single was Tattoo.
Didn't a similar thing happen with Jordin Sparks's "This is My Now" and No Air was her first real single? Cuz I seem to remember TIMY not really charting high if it did at all but No Air was a huge hit for Jordin. Correct me if I'm wrong. -------------------- |

The main reason we only get part of songs not full songs and why we get older songs that are cheaper to get the rights to. The newer songs are ones that the artist/writer etc is still making money off of and don't want karaoke people to mess it up and ruin it's image w/o helping to pay for the possibility of ruining it. Yes There are cases like Haley singing You & I (previously unreleased) or Rolling In The Deep (partly helped to gain fame) but mostly the fresher ones want more for them rather than thinkin it would be a promotional tool. -------------------- AI Forever: Kelly Clay Diana Carrie Kat Melinda Syesha Allison Crystal Haley Jessica

Jordin's first album single was Tattoo. Ah yeah thats right she put out Tatoo first, No Air was was just her biggest hit. Well here in Australia it was anyway, she was the first non-Australian Idol winner or contestant to get to Number 1 on our ARIA charts. Although Kelly Clarkson recently got to No1 with Mr Know It All, but why that was the first KC song to get to No1 I'm not too sure, Since U Been Gone seems to be her most popular. -------------------- |

No Air was a pretty big hit here in the US also. It's one of my favorite songs of hers
