Well, Sio got to go home for a little bit, but she may need to head back out before Friday night. Hurricane Earl is supposed to be bearing down on the Cape by then and some predictions have it scoring an almost direct hit. She mentioned in an interview she wants to take her little sisters to Disneyworld, so this may be a good time to do it.

I was happy today because the hurricane wasn't going to be much of a threat to NYC but now I feel bad because it's going to hit the Cape sad.gif

26 million in Earl's way

The U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday issued some updated data on coastal communities that could be impacted by Earl.

The big number: "26 million people in 68 counties, stretching from North Carolina to Maine, could face hurricane and tropical storm conditions within the next 48 hours."

Another interesting stat: 83 percent of housing units in Massachusetts' Barnstable County, where Cape Cod is located, were built before 1990. That could become important if Earl, as expected, spins close to the Cape Cod area. Older homes tend to be less resilient in storm conditions. fear2.gif fear2.gif

In the two or three interviews that Capecast did with Sio's parents at her home, it looks like it was a frame house instead of brick and hurricane force winds could make matchsticks out of it.

Nah. Older houses will leak more in heavy rains, but most of them are less likely to blow away, rather than more likely to, compared to newer construction. My house was built in 1928, and it was made with probably 3x the materials that the same size house today would be built with. Alot of Massachusetts is like that, too.

Sio is pretty skinny too, so I hope she has relocated somewhere where the wind won't get ahold of her......

Good recall on the name of the hugger! Yep, his name was Earl.

Even though the storm was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm before it got to the Cape, it still had high winds and lots of heavy rain. It is supposed to be gone by Saturday morning, so maybe that area can salvage their Labor Day weekend's tourist invasion.
