Here's a snippet from a new article in USA Today:

Pia Toscano will kick off Idols tour with new single

[...] "It's a great song," says Pia, shortly after finishing her dress-rehearsal performance at the Maverik Center Tuesday night. "It's about growing into being a woman, being independent. It can apply to so much, whether it's me on American Idol or being in a relationship."

Pia recorded the mid-tempo number (no, it's not a ballad), which was written and co-produced by Esther Dean, about a month ago. "I literally learned it a few hours before I went into the studio," she says. "It was one of the fastest songs I've ever recorded. We had the vocals done in less than an hour and a half -- that's how we knew it was the song we wanted."

And that's not the only thing Pia has recorded. "I'm eight to nine songs into my album," she says. Collaborators include Rodney Jerkins, with whom she has recorded three songs; Harvey Mason Jr., who worked on This Time; Rock Mafia and singer-songwriter Heather Bright.

[...] Pia says she's looking forward to giving This Time its public debut Wednesday, though the prospect of taking the stage with an unknown song does make her nervous. "No one has heard my single, so it's a little scary introducing it to everybody without them having heard the song," she says. "But I love this song. I have so much fun singing it -- it's so catchy."

The article also mentions the single's release date of July 12th, and offers a glimpse into how Pia got signed after her elimination:

[...] But that night back in April, when Pia learned of her surprise elimination, things didn't look so good. "When I was on stage, I was terrified my career was over. (I thought,) 'I'm finishing ninth, no one's going to want to work with me!' Then, the next day, I had a few meetings. And the next week, when I came back from doing press in New York, we did a whole demo thing. We recorded a bunch of songs, and they all worked out really well. That led to my deal."

OMG I just saw this right now. AHHHH this has really made and brighten up my day. I was expecting new music from her in August but the fact that we get her debut single next week is amazing. I can not wait for this.

OMGGG she's performing the song TONIGHT? Wowow, that is incredible. I hope we get some video of it.

Pia Toscano debuts 'This Time' single

Pia Toscano's back, to debut her single, This Time. It starts with little more than an acoustic guitar and a simple beat. The song steadily builds to a big chorus, anchored by the lyrical hook of "This time, I'm gonna do it my way." It's a savvy update of the kind of song American Idol fans historically love -- singalong chorus with lots of runs and big notes. The kind of thing that would have made for the best coronation song ever. Pia, of course, sings the fire out of it. Having never head it before, the crowd's not sure what to make of the song, but they love the singing.

I'm going to wait until I hear the iTunes version next week. But, Brain Mansfield even putting the words "coronation song" in his review, has me questioning what type of radio market Interscope is shooting for.

I think you're forgetting that Pia has all the fans now because of Idol. 9th place or not, it helped her get "discovered" by so many people.

How does that prove that Idol sucks? If anything, it proves that we need Idol. We most likely would have never heard of her otherwise, sadly.

Not what I was expecting but I'll reserve my judgement until I hear the studio version.

Ok, so much for CHR/Rhythmic. Brian Mansfield was wrong, no savvy update, this is smack in the 90's. Sounds good, but this isn't going to get her any new fans in the single buying tween/teen/20-something demographic.

For some reason I'm not surprised. There was one report back in April that Jimmy wanted Pia to do an AC type album, and this fits right in with that concept.

I might be in the minority but I actually like this song as a first song, I think it could catch on quite well. I'd wished they'd taken Pia into the obviously RnB genre but from what she chose on Idol that isn't the root she wanted to take.
