1. Katharine McPhee ![]() When I first began this list more than a year ago, I was constantly trying to think of the perfect way to start this writeup. I wanted a pretty intense, yet profound grabber. Eventually I thought that a good opening sentence would be something like: "To say that Katharine McPhee is my favorite contestant on American Idol would be a huge understatement, because she is so much more than that to me." However now I slightly find that verging on corny, so I'm left with that crappy opening sentence. We will deal with it however. “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” You all are used to my randomness and tendency to babble a lot by now, or well I would most likely assume. Why did it take me so long to do this particular writeup? Well obviously procrastination did play a major part, but also, I had time in like March, and I actually did start a little something then, but I just felt like as I wrote that writeup, I wasn't really into it. It wasn't one of those moments when I am like overbearingly in love with Katharine, and so I felt in order for a cornier writeup, I should wait to write it. So here I am now. What the hell am I talking about? Okay whatever, we are starting! However, before that, let's talk about thesis statements. A thesis statement is the most important sentence in an essay. It must be opinionated and argumentative. In a way it is the backbone of an essay. It tells exactly what the essay will be about. This is not an essay, obviously it is just a stupid writeup about Katharine McPhee, but however I am making a thesis statement anyways! Katharine McPhee is my favorite constant on American Idol because her voice, personality, and everything about her is captivating, pure, and believable. DAMN. That is cheesy. Okay, never mind, no thesis statement! January 25, 2008. This was the day that Katharine auditioned for American Idol. This actually was my a very exciting audition show for me even before I had watched it. Okay, now it's time to embarrass myself once again. Okay, so we all no that I'm a big loser and nerd and all of that stuff, but this will top it all. So um, I used to have an American Idol website. Yeah, shut up, and don't even say anything. On this website I updated it with news and such, and here's the link where you all may go ahead and mock me for the rest of life on Idolforums. Anyways, I was obsessed with this website, obsessed with updating it, it was just like where I let out all of my strange obsessions with American Idol. Anyways, the old AI Boards changed to the new ones in January 2006. I joined as soon as they were created and I was determined to have a lot of posts and to be one of the big really involved fans. So I spammed a lot! It turns out one of the site mods or something was looking at my profile and found the link to my precious website, and they PMed me asking me if I could do a fan recap for the January 25 Idol show. I was pretty siked, man. Yeah, I accepted! It had to be like 200 words, and I had to finish it like an hour after the show ended. So during that audition I had my Idol Journal going on and I was pretty intensely taking notes. We saw people like Sway Penal introduce us to his bizarre belt buckle, the airforce guy who hugged the lady with interesting teeth, and then there was Katharine. When they said her name I quickly scribbled down "Katharine McPhee" and then I was like "damn!"... wait no i didn't say damn when I was 14, so I was like "Darn! It's probably spelled with an E not and A, but I do not feel like changing it." I am basically saying that to brag that I knew how to spell her name before they even showed it. I liked Katharine from the start. I wrote that I predicted that she would make the top 12, and I also wrote that I could see her winning. So, I was sort of a psychic, kind of, a little bit, from the beginning. However, I want to be clear, that Katharine was not necessarily my favorite from the start. I know a lot of American Idol fans like to be like "AS SOoOOoOoN as My FAVOOOORITTE AUDITIONNEEDDD my Life CHANGED FoOOOrEEEEeEeEEEVERRR!!1!111!!1" Then you look through old posts and you see that they had a completely different favorite in the beginning. LOL okay then, sure, whatever you say. But yeah, Katharine was not necessarily my favorite at the beginning, I mean I liked her, but she just wasn't really sticking into my mind the way that others did. However now when I rewatch Katharine's audition of "God Bless the Child" I am completely blown away, and I definitely think that is among one of the best auditions ever on Idol. February 10, 2006. This was a very important day. I'm not sure how far along in Idol we were at the time, I'm not sure if it was a Wednesday, a good day, a bad day, but what I do know is this: this was the day that I asked to join "The McPhan Clan" on the AI Boards. That was the day when I considered myself a fan of Katharine McPhee. In my overly obsessive American Idol journal of season 5, in the first day of Hollywood, I guess that is when I really started to somewhat notice and acknowledge Katharine's existence. She sang "I Know I'll Never Love This Way Again". I knew absolutely pretty much nothing about Katharine's personality, but based on this performance, I liked it. Now this was very rare I guess. In previous seasons, obviously I didn't pick favorites based primarily on the voice, however I wrote in my journal that I liked Katharine. However this time the "like" is underlined, and I didn't do that with any other contestant, so I guess that is pretty historical, man. However this performance and that underlining moment, I really don't think that even that made me remember her and consider her among my favorites of S5. What did however make an impression on me somewhat, was when she made it to the top 24. I remember being surprised by the way she acted. I guess she sort gave me an impression that she was as dull as a door nob. And this new side of her where she kissed the judges and cracked her knuckles really surprised me. I thought she was kind of weird, but I liked her. I liked how she was beeped out with the American Idol sign, when usually I was like "OMG THEY SAID A BAD WORD!!!", hey I was immature, okay, but when Katharine got beeped out there was something profound and fascinating about it. I liked how she stood up for Crystal. When she made it to the top 24, I predicted she would make the top 12, and when I asked myself if I thought she had a chance of winning I said: "Maybe... probably not?" Interesting. In seasons 3, 4, and 5 of American Idol I always printed out the pictures of the contestants on the American Idol website immediately after the top 24/32 was announced. What I did was I predicted who I thought would be in the top 12 during the top 24 rounds, and take their pictures and tape them to my wall in my room, and when the top 12 was finally announced I redid my wall with the official top 12 contestants. When making my "Wall of Fame", that's what I called it, I know it's weird, anyways, but when making this in season 5, I was counting my pictures of the contestants and I noticed that one was missing. I couldn't figure out who it was though. I swore that I printed out all of the pictures. So I counted the guys, and I had all of the guy pictures, and then I counted the girl. To my surprise there was one missing, but I could not figure out who, and then I remembered: Katharine McPhee. Katharine McPhee. The girl whose mother is a vocal coach. The girl who kissed all three judges on the lips. How did I forget her? She should be one of the ones that I remembered, but I didn't. Also, she was probably a definite to the top 12 because she really was a great singer. Anyways, my top 12 prediction was actually somewhat close that year. I only got three wrong people in there: Brenna, David Radford, and Ayla Brown. I originally didn't have: Taylor, Lisa, and Melissa. Anyways, by the time the top 12 girls night rolled around I considered Kellie and Paris my favorite, but to be honest there was another person who I thought about a lot that night before they had even performed, and that was Katharine McPhee. The girl who I kepted forgetting. I was curious about how she would do. And to my dismay she was last, so I would have to wait so long to see her. And then she came on. I found myself actually nervous about how she would do. I wanted her to do well, I found myself wanting her to do better than the other girls. And then her she starts singing. It starts off slow, and my dad who was sitting next to me was like "Boring", and then the song gets going and she's doing really well. Katharine's tendency to always surprise me is what really made me interested in her. I suppose part of it is why I am still a loyal fan today. I became interested in hearing everything she had to say. She was totally fascinating to me. I enoyed her sense of humor, and I believed the things that she said. Then there came that day: the day when I was in the Ace's Highrollers thread on the AI Boards. I was casually posting and someone posted a link to an interview with this girl named Jennifer who had been cut in Hollywood. I read the interview, and it was definitely an interesting read, and the girl predicted Chris Daughtry or Ace Young to win, so I had a good feeling about Ace's future. But there was something else... she said that Ayla was a rich brat, something mean about Kellie, and then she said that she was in Katharine's group for the group of 3 things and she found her to be overzealous and bossy which made her a "bitch". I didn't want my favorite contestant to be a bitch, but I liked her personality, and I loved her voice. I googled this girls name and it actually took me to a thread here on Idolforums. The article had been posted in GD, and basically everyone in the thread except for Chris and Ace fans were calling her bitter. I was surprised that hey hadn't been banned, because I was used to the AI Boards. I continued to read the thread, and to my surprise there was a member who registered with the username "JenniferS". The girl revealed that she was the Jennifer from the interview, and she said someone referred her here to IDF because people were calling her bitter and stuff. She said that she was really disappointed when she gave that interview and that she said some things that she wished she hadn't said. She also said that her and Katharine were friends, and that she wasn't a bitch. And it really was her, she also posted a link to her myspace, attempting to get people to become fans. Pshhh. Anyways, despite the post that Jennifer made here on IDF, I still was not entirely convinced. She used the adjective "bitch" when talking about Katharine. It's not usually a good thing to be called a bitch. So the next week I watched Katharine with skepticism. I didn't know whether or not to keep her as a favorite, or to throw her out before her bitchiness starts showing. And then she performed "Think". That performance made me not care what others thought of her. I liked her, and I would continue to like her. This performance, and Katharine in general at this point actually, really helped me to achieve something that I had been working towards for about 3 years. And for that I am eternally grateful, and I swore that I would always be a fan of hers and support her in everything. Anyways, Katharine continued to blow me aways as the top 12 rolled around. I had never rewatched performances from any previous contestant as much as I did with Katharine. Also, I had never been as interested in hearing literally everything that a contestant has said, like with Katharine. I began to realize top 10 week that she was my #1 favorite of season 5. Why top 10 week? That was the week she sucked right? Right. Although I do have a guilty pleasure for The Voice Within even though it is kind of terrible. But that night she was better than a lot of others. Pretty much everyone sucked on top 10 night. But seeing Katharine in the bottom 2 was absolutely gut wrenching to me. I didn't even care that Ace was there. But seeing Katharine there, was just eye opening. I remember that was the first week that I had ever seen Dial Idol. And when I saw that they predicted Katharine to be eliminated I laughed. There was no way in hell she would have been eliminated. But, there she was in the bottom 2. I really did think she was leaving, but she didn't. And I was beyond relieved and I voted more than I ever had before. Although, I did split votes with Ace. But I used like 6 phones every night, and I was totally intense. I was determined to have Katharine make it as far as possible. Why? Because every week I craved a new vocal. A new performance that I could rewatch over and over again so that my ears would have that same pleasure that the were treated to the previous week. My god that's corny, but whatever. And it was really weird to have Katharine proclaimed as my #1 favorite from S5, because she was a female. No, I promise you that I am not sexist. I am a girl too! I liked other girl contestants, but my favorites just usually tend to be guys. However, I somewhat think that Katharine being a girl really helped me to be able to follow her more because I understand girls more than guys? Someone to Watch Over Me was definitely another defining moment as a Katharine fan for me. It was just omg perfect. Anyways, by the top 5, I was just sick of American Idol and I wanted it to be over. I really felt like Katharine had no chance of making it to the finale, and there was absolutely no way I could sit through a finale without her in it. Top 4 week was probably the hardest week for me ever on American Idol. The judges teared apart both of her performances, and she was receiving more hate than ever. I knew that it was her time to leave, but I didn't feel like she deserved to leave based on her past performances. As soon as Seacrest made his way out, I did not move and I sat there in determination voting like I had never voted before. 6 phones. 2 numbers. 1 contestant. The next night came the result show and I seriously had no idea how I would react. I was quite relieved that I was home alone, so that way when she was voted off nobody would think I was weird for crying about a reality tv show contestant. There Katharine stood in the bottom 2, about to be struck with elimination. But what if she turns out to be safe? No, there was no way in hell that she was---oh my god. She was safe. Chris Daughtry was eliminated. Katharine was safe. Not only was she safe, but Chris Daughtry was leaving. It wasn't Elliott, it was Chris. Katharine actually had a chance of making it to the finale. When Ryan said the results I literally fell out of my seat. I then found myself screaming. Top 3 week was another battle. Also it was the week when I finally decided to leave the AI Boards and gradually I started posting here at IDF. Okay, so I actually just found this writeup saved in a random document, and I never felt like finishing it, but I found it today and figured I'd post it. Anyway, love kat still. And I would like to announce that I am making another Idol list this summer, which hopefully will end up completed, so get ready yall. -------------------- |
