Brian Melo Day * 6 to 9 a.m. -- Media appearances * 9:30 to 11 a.m. (tentative) -- Appearances at Melo's former schools. Open only to students and staff of the schools. * Noon to 1 p.m. -- Autograph session at Sheraton Hamilton Hotel. Open to the public. * 4 p.m. -- East Hamilton Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club. Open to members only. * 5:45 p.m. -- City of Hamilton rally at Jackson Square rooftop plaza. * 7:30 p.m. -- Hamilton Bulldogs home opener at Copps Coliseum. Mark Friday, Oct. 12, on your calendar as Brian Melo Day. That's when Melo comes home to thank the people of Hamilton for helping to crown him Canadian Idol. And the City of Hamilton returns the favour by thanking Melo for putting it back on the national map. Melo, who has been working on his debut album in Toronto since winning the title Sept. 11, will be the star attraction at a city-sponsored rally on the Jackson Square rooftop at 5:45 p.m. Mayor Fred Eisenberger and Councillor Sam Merulla will make a special presentation to Melo before he sings his single All I Ever Wanted. The rally will follow a special noon-hour public autograph session at the Sheraton Hamilton Hotel. Also on Melo's agenda that day will be private visits to the 25-year-old rock singer's former schools, including Holy Family elementary -- and a quick trip to the East Hamilton Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club. Melo will end the day singing the national anthem at the Hamilton Bulldogs' home opener that night at Copps Coliseum. Football fans will also get a chance to hear the Melo version of O Canada Sunday, Oct. 14, when he sings it at Ivor Wynne Stadium before the Tiger-Cats' game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. "I just got the schedule today and it looks pretty jam-packed," Melo said yesterday in an interview from the Sony/BMG offices in Toronto where he's working on the new CD. "But it's great. Once I won, I said we've got to find a day when I go back and show the people of Hamilton how much I appreciate their support." Merulla, who represents the east-end ward where Melo was born and raised, said he plans to put a resolution before the next meeting of council to proclaim Oct. 12 as Brian Melo Day. Melo has only been able to return to Hamilton a couple of times since the Idol finale, including a trip to celebrate the birth of his sister's son. Melo admitted he now finds it difficult to appear in public without drawing a crowd. "Two of my nephews are on a football team and I went to see them play last Sunday," Melo said. "Everybody on the bleachers gave me a big ovation and I ended up signing a lot of autographs. But everyone was really gracious and nice." Melo will be starting a cross-country tour next month with two concerts planned for Hamilton Place Dec. 1. The 8 p.m. show is sold out but there are a few seats left for the 4 p.m. concert. I am so going to Sheraton Hotel for the autograph session and I am going to the Jackson Square Rally! I just emailed the person who wrote this article to tell me where the Jackson Square Rooftop Plaza is and he said it is located in the Sheraton Hotel is.
