An America Idol, an original Beatlemania cast member, a Tony Award nominee and a piano-playing magician. This may not be your typical orchestral line-up, but it’s just a small sampling of the talent preparing to take the stage with the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra this season.

“The variety of artists and presentations is really incredible,” said Artistic Director and Conductor Jung-Ho Pak.

The season opens with a feast for not only the ears but the eyes as well. A highlight of the September performances will be Alexander Scriabin’s’ “Prometheus: Poem of Fire.” Scriabin wanted to create a “symphony of light and sound,” but unfortunately had no way to accurately depict his vision during his lifetime. Enter musicologist Anna Gawboy and well-known lighting designer Justin Townsend.

“Scriabin was known to envision a relationship between sound and light,” said Pak. “Our performance, with the help of Anna and Justin, will attempt to come closer to his original intent than ever before.”

September’s concert also features the return of the dynamic pianist Adam Neiman, performing his own piece, “Visions.” The charming and humorous “Voices from the Gallery,” about famous artwork will also be performed and narrated by Erica Horn.

Tony Kishman, the star of the Paul McCartney tribute Concert in October, is an original Beatlemania cast member and also a returning guest to the CCSO.

“You haven’t heard songs like “Eleanor Rigby” or “Live and Let Die” until you’ve heard them played with the powerful sound of live horns and vibrant strings on the same stage,” said Pak. “It’s truly an amazing experience.”

The CCSO concert experience isn’t limited to what’s on stage. This season the aim is to continue to make a visit to a Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra concert much more interactive, said Pak.

Before each Classics concert, guests can learn more about the music and composers from Dr. John Clark. Learn why the performance of “Pictures of an Exhibition” by Modest Moussorgsky is so unique (September), gain insight into Neapolitan folk songs (November) and discover what a passacaglia is (April).

New features such as the “Talk Back” series where guest artists, conductors and anyone else associated with the performance will stay on stage after the concert and answer audience questions allow for another avenue of access. The popular guest artist luncheons and events prior to concert day will also continue allowing music enthusiasts to have an intimate conversation with not only Jung-Ho Pak, but the guest artists as well.

“We are transforming classical music from a conservative and traditional experience to something that is much more uplifting, powerful and can often be a transforming experience,” said Pak.

“Live music is very powerful,” he continued. “Regardless of what you have at home to ‘plug into,’ IPods, IPads or what have you, nothing comes close to the exhilaration of seeing someone doing something incredible right before your eyes.”

The 2012-2013 CCSO season boasts an assortment of local talent as well. The much anticipated holiday concert on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 and 2 features American Idol alum Siobhan Magnus, the Bart Weisman Klezmer Swing Group, and the Chatham and Falmouth chorales – all from the shores of Cape Cod.

“We are so blessed to have so much talent in this community.” Pak said. “It’s really important for us to incorporate these local stars into our programming as well as introducing our audiences to guest artists from across the world.”

Another highlight of this season is that CCSO guests will get the opportunity to see Associate Conductor Joan Landry take charge of the orchestra with the fun and nostalgic “Oh What a Night” concert in February. Broadway stars Ron Bohmer, Bradley Dean and Tony nominee Joshua Henry will bring back the days of bellbottoms and beehives with the fantastic songs by ‘60s greats like Elvis Presley and Stevie Wonder.

“Joan does an amazing job with our young musicians conducting the Youth Orchestra, and our education concerts,” said Pak. “This year we want to give our audience the opportunity to get to know her as well.”

The extraordinary talent of the CCSO musicians will be highlighted at the April concerts. Heather Goodchild Wade and Laura Manko, along with their colleagues, will perform the world premier of a special arrangement of Handel’s Passacaglia for Violin and Viola.

The pinnacle of the Cape Cod Symphony’s 51st season will be the culmination of the year-long “Soloist” competition. Pak is searching New England to name the next big classical star. Three finalists will perform with the orchestra during its final concerts in May. Audience voting will determine who takes home the title of “The Soloist.”

“We think this is the perfect way to end a very inventive season,” said Pak. “I am fairly certain that the stories and performances of the three remaining finalists in May will inspire and excite the audience. Without a doubt, the winner will earn their first 2,000 or so fans after performing with the CCSO.”
